Course Description

Required Textbook (you can refer this book from the library, need not buy
the book)
Robert L. Mathis and John H.Jackson. Human Resource Management. 10th edition. Thomson.

Teaching Methodology
The pedagogical approach is based on explaining fundamental concepts in their simplest form, building
theoretical frameworks on the basis of these concepts and then applying them to the understanding of
specific real-world managerial problems or situations.
This course will involve a significant amount of reflective analysis of cases. This would be done through
reading, evaluating and writing. Students should be prepared to dedicate some hours per day only to
reading activities, although the exact amount of reading will vary per session. Readings will involve
analytical tools as well as applications to the management world. Bearing in mind that study of
management is conceptual, therefore it is important to understand the real life examples given in the book
and draw a hypothesis. Diagrams, graphical analysis are important tools of learning through this trajectory.

Communication
I will regularly post course-related announcements to the course web page on PowerCampus. All relevant
documents (syllabus, case study, problem sets, answer keys, extra readings) will be uploaded there as well.
You are responsible to check the course web page regularly. You may still email me personally should you
have any question.

Course Requirements and Grading

Your course grade will be based on the following:

Attendance ..10%
Class activities ...... 15%
Quizzes 15%
Midterm Exam ... 25%
Final Exam 35%

Attendance
You are responsible to attend the lectures regularly and read the assigned
sections before each class session. This is not a principles course, therefore
bear in mind that there is very little chance that you succeed in this course
without reading the assigned material in advance.
I will strictly follow ADAs Attendance Policy. More than two (2) absences will
lower your attendance grade. For each additional absence, you will lose onefourth of the attendance grade, which makes 10 percent of the course grade.
In other words, you will exhaust all of the 10 percent slated for attendance
after four (4) absences (on top of the two excused ones). Rare exceptions will
apply only in extreme and objectively verifiable circumstances and must be
discussed with the instructor before the occurrence. IMPORTANT: if you miss

40 percent of classes for any reason, I reserve the right to fail you no matter
how successful you are in other grading components.
You are responsible for arriving on time for classes. Late arrival results in
disruption to class members and is unfair to your classmates and the
instructor. That said, if you are late for more than 5 minutes, you still may
attend the class, but you will be counted absent.
Class Activities
Class activities included case study, presentation, hypothesis writing and
reflection. The best way to learn Human Resource Management is to practice
critical, lateral thinking and to understand the basic concepts of management.
In order to comprehend and have a holistic approach, we will work on case
study, real life corporate problem solving scenarios, hypothesis and analysis
of such situations. Activities in class will include evaluation, decision-making
and troubleshooting on the conditional framework. Writing reflection on given
journals and your opinion towards problem solving will help you enhance your
decision making and leadership skills. Power point presentation with
appropriate audio-video aids will be encouraged to develop persuasive and
confidence building skills.

Quizzes
Quizzes will be unannounced/ announced and will be held toward the end of
the class. The purpose of a quiz can be two-fold: a) to see whether you have
read the assigned reading before the class; b) to see whether you have
listened to what was going on in class on the particular day. Each quiz will
take about 25 minutes of class time, comprising of 10 multiple choice
questions. I plan to assign 3 quizzes and drop the lowest grade.
Written Exams
Both midterm and final exams are in-class, closed-book examinations. You will
be given practice exercises in advance. Final exam will be comprehensive, yet
most questions will be from the material covered after the midterm exam.
Written exams will comprise of short questions, diagrams, graphs, analysis of
diagrams, empirical tables and graphs, open-ended questions and related
analytical reflections. I plan to hold problem-solving sessions before each
written exam.
