Multimedia Authoring Tools: Video Production and Editing Systems.

Video editing software is to motion images what word processing is to text. It is also known as
Non Linear Editing (NLE), application software which handles the editing of video sequences on a
computer. Howard (2001) once mentioned that this tool can be very time consuming for those who
wants to create high-quality (HD) videos and especially for novice.

The main different between video production and video editing is the process of doing it. Video
production deals with the process of capturing images and turns it into motion images accompanied
by sounds. However, video editing deals with the process of editing an existing video.

There are various formats of video but the widely known and compatible with most media play-
ers are for instance, Audio Video Interleave (AVI), Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), Windows
Movie Video (WMV), or QuickTime Movie (MOV). There are also different types of video player, such
as Windows Media Player, Winamp, Media Player Classic, The KM Player and iTunes.

Video has been proven to be an effective method in teaching English as a foreign/second lan-
guage (EFL/ESL) for both young and adult learners. Video can be used in a variety of instructional
settings - in classrooms, on distance-learning sites where information is broadcast to learners who
interact with the facilitator via video or computer, and in self-study and evaluation situations. It can
also be used in the teacher’s personal and professional development or with students as a way of
presenting content, initiating conversations, and providing illustrations for various concepts. Teach-
ers and students can always create their own videotapes as content for the class or as a means to
assess learners’ performance.

Video materials provide students with the opportunity to experience the target language in a
more natural context. Language is presented in an apparently less structures way. Through the use
of video materials, ESL students are afforded the opportunity to observe and participate in a more
active learning experience, while maximizing the use of several cognitive skills.

In the classroom, video production and editing tools can be manipulated for instructional use, for
example, demonstration of procedures, student-created presentations, video lectures, video portfo-
lios, video decision-making/problem-solving simulations, and documentation of school activities, vis-
ual literacy instruction and teaching Video Production.

There are also a lot of useful websites on the net that can help teachers to have an overview
about using videos in the ESL classroom, or teaching English through videos, for instance, ESL par-
tyland, ESL galaxy, English 4 Kids, Dave’s ESL Cafe, Teacher Joe’s Super Teachers, and English
Club.
