Indian Scenario

India can sub stitute expensive source s su ch as diese l wi th solar to mee t gr owin g peak power demand.
For tuna tel y India is both densely popula ted and has hi gh solar insola tion , providing an ideal
co mbination for solar power in Ind ia. In Jul y 2009, India unveiled a $19 bil lion plan to produce 20 GW
of solar po wer by 2020. Under the plan , solar- powered e quipmen t and applica tion s would be
manda tory in all government build ings includ ing hosp ita ls and hote ls. The scope for sola r PV growth in
India is massive, especiall y gr owth in distribu ted so lar as over 600 mi llion people - mostl y in rural
areas - currently don't have acce ss to electri ci ty. It is useful for providin g gr id quali ty, reliab le po wer in
rural areas where the line voltage is low and insuffi cient to ca ter to conne cted load. The Govt. of India
i s planning to electrify 18 ,000 villages b y ye ar 2012 throu gh rene wab le energy syste ms espe ciall y b y
so lar PV syste ms. This offers tremendou s growth poten tia l for Indian sola r PV indu str y.

Based on the mar ket si ze and its attractiveness, four mar ket se gmen ts appear to have the maximum

Rural electrifi cation Decentrali sed Di str ibuted Genera tion (D DG)
Grid in teractive solar PV po wer plan ts
Backup Po we r for Telecom ( Base Transceiver Sta tion ))

Rural Ind ia i s home to more than 70% of India s popula tion and energy is crucial for raisin g the
standard of living in rural Ind ia and encouragin g emplo ym en t generation. The Government of Ind ia has
kep t a tar ge t of providing electri city for all b y 2012 with a mini mum con sumption of 1 kW per da y per
househo ld. But even grid conne cted village s toda y experience lar ge po wer ou tages. Under the Po we r
for All programme , the Government of Ind ia has ta rgeted electrifi cation of all village s by 2012 in wh ich
18 ,000 remote village s would be electr ified usin g non-conven tional po wer source s. This would provide
an ideal situa tion for the large-scale in troduction of DD G te chnolo gie s, especiall y solar PV.

Global Scenario

Solar ener gy is becom ing more econom ical ly a ttractive as te chnologie s improve and the co st of
ele ctr ici ty genera ted by fossil fuels rise s. By 2020, hundreds of billion s of dollar s of investmen t capi tal
wil l probabl y boost globa l solar -generating capacity 20 to 40 times highe r than i ts current level.
T he wor ld-wide installed capa ci ty of the solar photovol tai c power has escala ted from 1.3 GW in the
year 2001 to 15.2 GW by 2008. Solar PV is the world s faste st gro wi ng ener gy source .

T he five largest solar PV cel l producin g countr ies were Japan, China, German y, Tai wan, and the Uni ted
Sta te s. In recen t ti mes, the geo graphi cal focus of solar PV manufacturin g has shifted to wa rds
developin g coun tr ies, especia lly China , India , Malaysi a and Tai wan. It is expected tha t by 2011- 12, a
sizable chunk of the manufacturin g base wi ll be developed by leadin g manufacturer s in the se
coun trie s, wi th India and China remainin g the main stra tegic choi ce.

Accordin g to Morgan Stanle y Resear ch, the so lar PV indu stry i s the fastest gro wi ng sector in ener gy
and is expected to gro w four-folds by 2011.
