Theearlyalchemistsdividedtheirchemicalsintomajorandminorarcana.Themajorarcana
consistedofthefourcompounds:Vitriol,Natron,LiquorHepatis,andPulvisSolaris.Threeoutof
thefourconsistedofdualingredientsthatwereeasilyseparable.Vitriolcouldbebrokendown
intosulfuricacidandiron.Natronappearedassodiumcarbonateandsodiumnitrate.Pulvis
Solariswasmadeupoftheredandblackvarieties.Thus,thesevenchemicalscomprisingthe
minorarcanawere:SulfuricAcid,Iron,SodiumCarbonate,SodiumNitrate,LiquorHepatis,Red
PulvisSolaris,andBlackPulvisSolaris.Thealchemistsbelievedthatthesesecretchemicals
