First off, lets make one thing very clear, Windows 8.1 is not a new
OS, it is a balking, mind staggering, eye wateringly large update to
the original Windows 8. It is not the stripped down version Windows RT where you get Microsoft Office 2013 free. It is an update
and it is currently free for ALL windows 8 users, single language,
Windows 8 professional or otherwise.
Now lets have a look at what we can expect from this new face

Windows 8.1 Lock screen is fine. You boot up your
gadget, and the speed of the start up time takes
your breath away. It might just be me, but the windows 8.1 start up seems even faster than its predecessor. Then you come to the lock screen. Here
you can personalize to your hearts content. Now
windows let you boot up to a slide show of your favourite pictures from virtually anywhere, you could
even boot up to the Web Cam!
For those of you that missed it the first time around,
Windows 8.1 the picture passwords, that are infact
faster and more comprehensive than your normal
pin codes. A touch, a click, a drag, a swipe can have
you booting windows faster and more secure than

operations can be performed. So drag and drop, cut,

this start page. No longer does every application you
install, full with every shortcut and version end up
on the Start Screen. This time, in Windows 8.1 You
choose what goes on there. The rest of that junk sits
in the all applications screen if and when you need it.
Then there is the cool new look and presets of the
tiles. They are more active than ever! Moreover, you
choose their size from 1 tile to 4 (weather for example). This gives an overall widget like experience
which makes things that much snappier and more
efficient. Whats more Dont like those tiles? Batch
uninstalls makes short work of any group of tiles you
want deleted.
Finally there is the extensive personalization that you
can do on there. Virtual all parts of this screen can
be configured to your liking. For some the ultimate
tweak is making the Start screen look exactly like the
desktop. Gives a bit of homely familiarity I guess. Of-

Kit Kat has come with many new and exciting features. Lets have a look.

The Android 4.4 has undergone many subtle changes from its previous versions. Running on
the new Linux kernel version 3.8, although many of
these changes are hidden yet some of them can be
seen and enjoyed.

Android Kitkat Animation

Want to boast about your Android among
your friends? Well all you have to do is to go to the
About Phone option in your Settings and tap several
times over the Android version of your device. You
will see a beautiful revolving K on your screen.

New and Stylish UI

With the first look of the new version, you
will find that Google has taken great pains to make
the new version different. With the new Google Xperience Launcher (Nexus), you will find that the shape

and size of some icons has been changed. There are

new icons for Camera, App tray, a new and flexible
dialer, new email and download option etc. Also,
the Google search option has gone translucent from
opaque.

The changed Google Now is the best part of
this version. All you have to do is to swipe to the

bottom.

The Dialer has got a Google Now style makeover with a card type organization. Googles local
search data is tied into the new phone app, so you
can easily find the phone number of a business you
forgot to save. Also, now the new and smart caller
ID identifies the number of local businesses as soon
you get a call from them.

compatibility issues. But with Android 4.4 there

applications.With a new API, ActivityManager.

Print using Android 4.4. You can now give printing instructions from your Android 4.4 enabled

With the introduction of two new cryptographic algorithms, the security has been bolstered.

Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) support has been added to the
key store provider improving security of digital
signing, applicable to scenarios such as signing of an application or a data connection. The
Scrypt key derivation function is implemented
to protect the cryptographic keys used for fulldisk encryption.

real go for money. Its update for Nexus 7 and

Encouraged by public response to its Passport
Seva mobile app for Android phones, the Ministry
of External Affairs (MEA)
has now launched the application for Windows and
Apple iOS platforms. The
app provides passport-related information on the smart phones. The MEA
had released the android version of the app in
March this year. This is an extended service of
the Passport Seva Project, executed in Public-Private-Partnership mode with IT services major
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Passport Seva provides a wide variety of
services such as status tracking, locating a passport office and other general information. The
application provides information on various steps
involved to obtain a passport related service and
related phone numbers in case of queries or concerns. The users will also be able to search for a
Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or District Passport
Cell (DPC) in a district where a passport application can be submitted. This can also be searched
based on PIN code. For certain states and districts, the users can search for police stations as
well. Citizens residing overseas who apply for a
passport service in Indian Missions/Posts abroad
can also utilize this facility for searching address
and other relevant information.
The fee calculator feature of the app enables users to find out the applicable fee based on the
service and mode of submission. Users can track

the status of their passport applications by providing the file number and date of birth. In case
the passport has been dispatched, delivery status
