Ponderosa tenants lash

out against rent increase
By Maddison Cervantes

Roco Hernndez /Nevada Sagebrush

Associated Students of University of Nevada President Caden Fabbi and Vice President Jessica Salsman pose for a photo during the
first meeting of the 83rd session on Wednesday, April 15 in the Joe Crowley Student Union. Fabbi and Salsman have recently completed
rounds of interviews to select members of the executive branch.

The University of Nevada, Renos

graduate students are teaming up
against Ponderosa Village, the universitys year-old graduate housing
complex.
While many of the graduate students residing in Ponderosa agree that
the community aspect of the apartment structure is ideal living exclusively with other graduates they are
claiming that many of the anticipated
amenities have not been received.
Rahul Thareja, College of Science
representative for the universitys
Graduate Students Association, is not
a tenant of Ponderosa. However, he is
involved with the Village, and when
tenants got word that their rent would
be increasing in the fall, Thareja took
action.
Thareja created a petition detailing
the rent increase, and offered an invitation for anyone to sign and express
their opinions on the matter.
When tenants originally signed
their leases, a single-bedroom apartment cost $850 per month, and a twobedroom was available at $1,100. With
the rent increase implemented in the
fall, the numbers will rise $79 for a
single and $100 for a two-bedroom
per month. Therefore, the increase

will create new totals of $929 and

$1,200 for the two living options.
Jerome Maese, director of Residential Life, Housing & Food Services explained that the university partnered
with Balfour Beatty Construction to
create Ponderosa Village and house
graduate and professional medical
students. The largest reason for the
rent increase, according to Maese, is
that Balfour Beatty is paying the complexs mortgage. Therefore, a feature
of allowing Ponderosa to continue
operating at the current level is the
increase in rent the tenants are incurring.
The lowest rate that we offer is only
going up about one percent, Maese
said. So thats kind of why we are a
little confused about some of the stuff
we are seeing with the online petition.
Maese went on to explain that Ponderosas lowest possible cost will be
$600 per month beginning in the fall
for a two-bedroom apartment, which
is a one percent rate increase over the
lowest rate for the current semester.
Additionally, Maese stated that the
cost of living goes up every year.

Freshly
sworn-in
Associated Students of the University
of Nevada senators and officers
held the first meeting of the 83rd
session on Wednesday, April 15
in the Joe Crowley Student Union
Ballroom C.
The first items on the agenda
were the inaugural ceremonies
for President Caden Fabbi and
Vice President Jessica Salsman,
each of whom were sworn in by
Chief Justice Jonathan Barnes.
The senates first order of business was to appoint a senator as
speaker of the senate. According
to the Statutes of the Associated
Students, the speakers duties
include producing the agenda
for senate meetings and ensuring that the senate complies with
Nevada Open Meeting Law.
Sen. Nick Andrew of Interdisciplinary Programs and Sen.
Alex Crupi of the College of
Engineering were nominated
for the position. Senators noted
that Andrews strength was his
incumbency and experience,
which they believe would help
the senate kick off faster than under the leadership of a senator in
his first term. The body was also
impressed by Andrews prepared
speech, which showed them his
dedication to the position.

The summer before commencing

her college career, Madeleine Poore
faced an experience that warped her

After moving to Reno from Australia
at the age of 12, Poore spent her high

As her first day of classes at the

state.
My freshman year I was a walking

I didnt have the words to really explain
what had happened to me, Poore said.

Some of the speaker pro

the legislative internship
program and perform the
duties of the speaker of the

the College of Education was
elected to serve as the speaker pro tempore in a 10-9 vote

linton maintains
one of the more
robust resumes among
presidential contenders, having been first lady, a U.S.
senator and secretary of state.
The only first lady to ever run for
office, Clinton was also the first
woman to be elected senator for
the state of New York in 2000, an
office she held for eight years.
In 2008, Clinton ran for the
Democratic nomination with
hopes of becoming the first
woman president, only to be defeated by then-senator Barack
Obama. Later that year, Obama
appointed Clinton as secretary
of state, an office she held for six
years. During and after her tenure, she came under fire from
both Congress and the public,
first following the death of a U.S.
ambassador in Benghazi, Libya,
and again as allegations arose
surrounding her use of a private
email during her time in the
State Department.
A darling of the Democratic
establishment, Clinton is the
heavy favorite going into the
nominating convention as no
serious Democratic contenders
have emerged to oppose her.
Heavy-hitters in the Democratic
Party, notably Sen. Elizabeth
Warren, have mostly bowed out
or simply shown a lack of interest.
However, in the general, Clinton
will have to keep an eye on the Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie
Sanders, who remains popular
across parts of her base.

lected by Texas as
senator in 2012, Cruz
had previously served
as Texas solicitor
general for five years. In that
time, Cruz was the youngest,
longest-serving and first Latino
solicitor general in the states
history. Cruz is also one of
three Latinos currently serving
in the US Senate.
A staunch conservative, Cruz
has made a name for himself
by shirking the oft-maligned
establishment wing of the
Republican Party in favor of
the markedly more conservative Tea Party wing. Notably,
Cruz has been a vocal critic of
the Obama administration,
particularly the Affordable
Care Act or Obamacare, and
has actively used the senate
filibuster as political and public
relations weapon.
Of the Republicans whove
already hit the campaign trail,
Cruz is likely the furthest shot
from the presidency. With his
ideology being so far to the
right, his base will lie within the
various ultra-conservative and
anti-establishment coalitions
within the GOP, such as the Tea
Party conservatives or libertarians, who are exceedingly upset
with current party leadership. It
could certainly be done, but the
issue is that where Cruz must
work to wrangle these groups
together, Rand Paul may
already have more than one in
his pocket.

Other Democratic candidates who are likely to run include

Martin OMalley, a former governor of Maryland, Jim Webb,
a former US senator, and Lincoln Chafee, a former governor
of Rhode Island. Current vice president Joe Biden has yet to
confirm or deny presidential ambitions and has said that if any
announcement were made, it would wait until the summer.
From the GOP, a multitude of candidates have expressed serious interest in a presidential run, but the most notable names
include Bush, who has been busy raising money, Chris Christie,
the current governor of New Jersey who has recently taken a
liking to visiting Iowa, and Scott Walker, the current Wisconsin

senator from
Kentucky, Paul
was originally an
ophthalmologist for
17 years before running for
the senate in 2010. The son
of former US representative
Ron Paul, the senator has
become one of the more
visible politicians on the Hill,
especially following his nearly
13-hour long filibuster of the
nomination of CIA Director
John O. Brennan in 2013.
Among all the candidates,
Pauls ideology leans furthest
toward libertarianism. He
has come out anti-abortion,
criticized the Federal Reserve
while advocating for reduced
taxes and increased privacy
protection. On foreign policy,
Paul is vehemently anti-war
and anti-intervention, a stance
that has drawn the ire of hawkish congressmen on both sides
of the aisle and criticisms that
he is excessively isolationist.
While voters from across the
spectrum are drawn to his varied policy stances, Paul has established himself as somewhat
temperamental, especially with
the media, with whom he has
found himself embroiled in a
war of words on more than one
occasion. Besides that struggle,
Paul will also have to contend
with the fact that while his base
may be broad, it may not be all
that large a weakness that
will make or break him during
the primaries.

LOCAL
STATE SENATE KILLS
RIDE-SHARING BILL
The bill that would regulate
ride-sharing companies such as
Uber failed in the Nevada senate
on Wednesday, April 15.
Senate Bill 439 required a twothirds majority to pass, but 10
senators, all Democrats, voted
against the bill. The opposition
was concerned with the safety of
future consumers, an issue that
the bill failed to address.
The Nevada Supreme Court
heard a lawsuit filed by Nevada
Attorney General Adam Laxalt in
November. The Associated Press
reported that Laxalt argued that
ride-sharing companies infringe
on the franchise rights of taxi
companies and cabdrivers serving fare-paying passengers under
state oversight.

ubio, elected to the

U.S. senate in 2010, is
also one of the three
Latinos serving in the
senate. Prior to his tenure in
Washington, Rubio served
as a city commissioner in his
hometown of Miami before
being elected to the Florida
House of Representatives.
Rubio is likely best remembered
for
delivering
the Republican response to
President Obamas 2013 State
of the Union address. In doing
so, Rubio was the first to deliver
a response in both English and
Spanish and was propped up as
a likable face for the GOP. However, the meat of the speech,
which attempted to draw a
hardline stance against the imminent sequester, was severely
undercut by another unofficial
and contrarian response delivered by none other than Rand
Paul.
Rubios toughest challenge
will likely come from fellow Floridian and former governor Jeb
Bush, who has yet to announce
his candidacy. Bush not only
controls the money from the
already-established Right to
Rise political action committee, but also the boon of being
the third and (currently) most
popular member of the Bush
dynasty. Ignoring Bush, Rubio
will still have to win at least one
of the early primaries in order
to maintain viability down the
road.

Other likely republicans include Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry
and Rick Santorum, each of whom ran and lost in 2012, as well
as Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, businesswoman Carly Fiorina
and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson. All in all, the Republican
nomination contest is shaping up to be a more heated race than
its Democratic counterpart.

Does President Barack Obama

have the authority to comprehensively reform immigration without involvement from Congress?
The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals
is trying to decide.
Last November, Obama issued
the executive order with the intent
to protect those living in the country illegally from deportation. A
26-state coalition led by Texas
brought on the lawsuit against
the Obama administration. The
states argue that Congress, not
the president, retains the power
to alter immigration policy.
The special hearing that took
place Friday, April 17 in New
Orleans followed the order by the
United States District Court Judge
Andrew Hanen that blocked the
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and the Deferred Action for
Parents of Americans programs.
Though the judges did not deliver a decision, Politico expects
the special hearing to end in a 2-1
result against the Justice Departments appeal. The Supreme
Court will be left to have the final
say in whether the policies can be
legally implemented.

MILITANTS EXECUTING
CHRISTIANS IN LIBYA
On Sunday, April 19 the Islamic
State, formerly known as ISIS or
ISIL, released a video purportedly
showing militants behead and
shoot two groups of Ethiopian
Christians in Libya.
The 29-minute video begins
by detailing a history of the
relationship between Christians
and Muslims. Near the end of it, a
masked militant standing among
the captives and IS executors
extends his pistol and addresses
Christian viewers in English.
To the nation of the cross
we are back againtelling you
the Muslim blood that was shed
under the hands of your religion
is not cheap. In fact, their blood
is the purest blood because their
nation behind them inherits
revenge, the masked individual
said.
The video alternates between
showing IS militants in southern
Libya shoot a group of Christians
in the head and IS fighters in eastern Libya sawing off the heads of
another group of Christians on
the beach.
The video has not been verified
and the number of victims and
their identities is unknown.
The White House released a
statement by National Security
Council Spokesperson Bernadette
Meehan denouncing the act of
terror.
The United States condemns
in the strongest terms the brutal
mass murder purportedly of Ethiopian Christians by ISIL-affiliated
terrorists in Libya, Meehan said.

Poore chose not to report
her assault, claiming that she
would not have been believed
at the time. She explained
that when women experience
sexual assault or other oppressions they are not always believed. However, Poore stated

that less than 1 percent of cases

reported are false.
Poore has friends who are
survivors and stated that when
police got involved in their cases, the survivors were asked unnecessary and victim-blaming
questions. Additionally, Poore
said that sexual assault is the
only crime that occurs where
the victims are interrogated as

Through organizations like

published on Aug. 29, 2014 explaining the benefits Ponderosa

was said to provide.
This well-appointed complex
offers students an on-campus
housing opportunity that offers
the tools they need to succeed
in todays educational environment, Johnson said.
The tenants of Ponderosa
would like to know exactly
where those tools are. The rent
increase has brought up a multitude of mixed feelings among
the Ponderosa community.
Maese explained that the new
rent amount of $600 for an individual lease including a washer,
dryer,
personal
bathroom,
kitchen and an on-campus location is viewed as an affordable
rate by the university. However,
Maese understands that the tenants may have different desires.
A voiced concern among the
tenants involves their parking
options, or rather their lack
thereof.
People cant even visit us
because of the parking issue,
Ponderosa tenant Sandesh Kannan said. I mean, its graduate
housing, we have family and
friends coming over. My friend
got two tickets already, so they
stopped coming.
Ponderosa tenants are given
the single option of parking
their vehicles in the universitys
orange lot.
Kannan and Thareja both
agree that upon paying a higher
amount in rent, tenants should
be provided a cheaper parking
option separate from the $400
university parking passes they
involuntarily purchased.
Maese voiced that there are
reasonable options provided to
Ponderosa tenants when purchasing a parking pass.
Tenants can buy a green or
blue parking pass too; they arent
restricted to the prices of the
yellow or orange passes, Maese
said. Aside from that, anyone
who wants to park on campus
has to pay for some sort of pass.
Nevada Today recorded that
25 percent of Ponderosa tenants are international graduate
students. Marena Manierka, another tenant, voiced a concern
regarding the inconveniences,
which many of the international
students are faced with while
living at Ponderosa.

Breanna Denney/Nevada Sagebrush

Ponderosa Village sign sits at the entrance to the graduate housing complex on Monday. The Village has recently come under fire for increasing the rent for the upcoming academic year.

They are so inflexible and so

clearly an outside company,
Manierka said. International
students appear at all times of
the year, and sometimes they
are only in the country for six
months. But you cant sign a
shorter lease, you have to pay
until July if you sign one at all.
Along with Manierkas statement, other tenants agree that
Ponderosa is uncompromising
with students who have no
choice but to leave the complex
before their lease is up.
Being that the largest percentage of medical students residing
at Ponderosa are international
students, Maese stated that it
is normal to want to live somewhere university-affiliated. The
housing department understands that the current leases
offered by Ponderosa do not

accommodate all international

students schedules.
Right now, there are only
12-month leases, Maese said.
The university is currently
working with Belford Beattie
about
possible
alternative
leases. Some people have voiced
concerns, so we are definitely
exploring other options.
Those who participated in
signing Tharejas petition include Ponderosa tenants, other
graduate students and the parents of tenants who voiced their
opinions that the rent increase is
unreasonable.
Graduate student Sravan
Kanukolanu posted the link
to a website on the petitions
comments section that details
the average rent prices in Reno.
For both a single-bedroom and
a two-bedroom, the website

claims that the average is less

than $1,000.
If there are grad students who
are looking to join UNR and they
look for a place to rent, the first
go-to place would be the graduate housing, Kanukolanu said.
And the moment they find that
they have to spend almost 70
percent of their stipend on rent,
they will be concerned about it.
Additionally, other tenants
stated that Ponderosa seemingly views them as nothing
more than a profit.
Ponderosa tenant Jasmine
Hankey acquired a bad taste in
her mouth since attempting to
sign her lease. Hankey claims
that she was asked to reapply
and sign another lease, after
Ponderosa misplaced her original document.
While living in Ponderosa has

been wonderfully convenient,

I am dissatisfied by how we
graduate students are being
viewed as dollar amounts, rather
than people struggling to subsist
on a monthly stipend as we seek
higher education, Hankey said.
Ponderosa Village has set its
sights on earnings and profitmargins and has lost sight of the
fact that those who reside within
its community are students.
Ponderosas tenants are distressed by a variety of factors
entailed in their residency. Similar to Hankey, many are seeking
fairness and acknowledgement
of the fact that they are students,
and their first priority is their
schooling.
Graduate student Juan Lopez
also signed the petition and
provided commentary to the
petition. He argued that on top

of each graduate credit costing

$270 (more in some cases),
graduate students do not work
full time, and these issues need
to be considered by Ponderosa.
If the purpose of this housing
is purely to profit and take even
more cash out of our students
pockets, then fine, the high
prices should stay, Lopez said.
Maese and Vice President
of Student Life Services Jerry
Marczynski will be attending
the upcoming GSA meeting
being held to discuss the rent
increases.
As of Monday, April 19, Tharejas petition had collected 135
signatures.

Negotiate your way to equal wages

I
t has been more than 50 years
since President John F. Kennedy introduced the Equal
Pay Act of 1963. The hope of
the act was to put an end to the
wage gap that existed between
men and women at the time;
however, as of 2013, women still
make 78 cents to every dollar that
men make on average, according
to the American Association of
University Women.
As the problem persists,
local governments have started
tackling the issue themselves. To
combat the injustice, Nevadas
Senate Committee on Judiciary
passed SB 167 in March, which
creates greater legal boundaries
for employers to limit various
forms of discrimination against
women. According to nevadaappeal.com, the proposal will

empower the Nevada Equal

Rights Commission to levy fines
up to $10,000 and strengthen
protections against discriminatory employment practices,
among other actions.
While the bill could potentially
empower women in the state of
Nevada to address underlying
discrimination, it is important to
recognize that wage inequality
is a complex issue that cannot
be narrowed to one factor. Some
argue that the wage gap can
partially be attributed to women
avoiding salary negotiations.
In fact, surveys from Carnegie
Mellon University indicate that
women are 2 1/2 times more
likely to feel apprehension about
negotiating. Furthermore, 20
percent of survey participants
(22 million adult women) said

they never negotiate at all despite

feeling that it might be necessary.
There may not be one easy
answer to addressing the wage
gap, but as a university community, it is critical that we do
our part in fighting inequality
ourselves. Salary negotiations can
be daunting, meaning we need
to help our peers gain the skills
and confidence to earn the wages
they deserve.
Women entering the workforce
need to understand the worth
of their skillsets and must enter
salary negotiations confident
of their value to their employer.
Moreover, women must also
understand the right questions
to ask of their employers when
entering a career. Nevadas SB
167 prohibits employers from
punishing individuals who ask

Do what you can

to stop cruelty to
helpless animals

hilosopher Immanuel Kant

once said, He who is cruel to
animals becomes hard also
in his dealings with men. We
can judge the heart of a man by his
treatment of animals. Now, more
than ever in my
life, I see the
true importance
of exemplifying
compassion
toward animals.
From a young
age, my parents
made it their
mission to instill
Ali
in my brother
Schultz
and me the
value of treating
animals with unconditional kindness.
My mom always said we have to
speak up for animal rights and preach
kindness for all animals alike because,
unfortunately, they do not have a
voice of their own.
After a recent volunteer session
at the Nevada Humane Society, this
lesson appeared more important to
me than it ever has been. Walking by
the kennels filled with pets that used
to be family members or who have
never felt companionship, I couldnt
help but question humanity. Why
do people neglect pets with such
ease? Or worst of all, treat animals
maliciously?
It also occurred to me that people
are very ignorant of where their pets
come from. According to the SPCA,
most of which are no-kill animal
shelters, every day in the United
States, approximately 2.7 million cats
and dogs are euthanized. The main
contributors to this are people who
buy from puppy stores and breeders.
Purchasing animals funds evils such
as unregulated puppy mills and
animal euthanasia. Not to get all Sarah
McLachlan on you, but while people
continue to buy animals, thousands
of pets with unconditional love to give
are dying in shelters.
Wonder where your four-legged
friend you bought at a puppy store
is coming from? Most all puppy
stores in America receive their pets
from puppy mills. Dont know what
a puppy mill is? A puppy mill is an
unregulated, filth-engulfed hell for
any animal who is subjected to live
there. Here, both dogs and cats are
used as breeding slaves until they die
from exhaustion.
Animals live out their lives in
cramped, feces-covered cages only to
be shipped off to their next destination (most likely a puppy store). If
people stopped funding breeders
and pet stores and recognized the
importance of doing deep research
before purchasing a pet, or rescued
an animal from the pound or a no-kill
shelter, eventually these pet stores
and breeders will go under.
Another issue that seems to be so
problematic today is the negative
stigma people associate with pit bulls.
What people dont understand is the
nature of the pit bull is based off of
its breeding origin and upbringing.
It is morally wrong to fault pit bulls
for acts of violence when they were
brought up in a negative environment. We do not fault misbehaved
children who grow up in a cruel
household.
In fact, most people have undeniable empathy toward those children.
My question is, why is the same pity
not demonstrated toward pit bulls?
Another common thing I hear all
the time is, But I know someone

who has had a pit bull their whole

life and one day it just snapped. It
is called inbreeding, people. Thats
what it does to an animal. When dogs
are bred with other animals from
the same litter, you cannot expect
them to be 100 percent mentally
competent; it is no different than it is
with people. Pit bulls have it in their
nature to be loyal family dogs dogs
that love unconditionally and live to
serve their owners. It is a damn shame
that shelters these days are overrun
with pits because they come from
incompetent, heartless owners.
Another thing that really irks me
is people who do not have an open
heart for the feline community. It is an
everyday thing to hear of people who
claim to love animals, but conveniently
leave out the fact that they hate cats.
Coming from someone who has had
cats their whole life, I can attest to cats
being just as much of a companion as
any dog can. My senior year in high
school wasnt the easiest in my life;
however, through that small rough
patch in life one thing that always
remained a constant was the unconditional love my cat Skye gave me.
Everyday at 12:20 when I would
get home from school Skye would
be waiting patiently by the garage
door to greet me. I rescued Skye from
an awesome organization I used to
volunteer for in Las Vegas known as
P.A.W.S. For the next five years Skye
would give me more unconditional
love than I couldve ever wished for.
He grew to be my cuddle buddy and,
most importantly, part of my family. Unfortunately, at the end of my
freshman year in college, I was given
the news that Skye was experiencing
terminal kidney failure.
Despite Skyes debilitating condition, when I went home for summer
vacation, Skye was just as much a
comrade to me as he ever was. Never
failing to greet me when I came back
from my ventures and never trailing
far behind me when it was time to
go to bed, Skye exemplified that cats
can be just as much a companion as
dogs can. It really is just a matter of
people keeping an open heart and
an open mind.
Animals do not pass judgment.
They do not act with malicious
intentions and they dont ask for
much other than a shot chance
to be a family member. In return for
an occasional belly rub and regular
care, they promise to shower you
with unequivocal love and affection
that embodies genuine intentions.
Animals do not have a voice, so it is
our duty to become knowledgeable
about what we could do to better
animal welfare and to get out there
and volunteer our time.
Albert Schweitzer, a famous
philosopher and advocate of
peace once said, We must fight
against the spirit of unconscious
cruelty with which we treat the
animals. Animals suffer as much
as we do. True humanity does not
allow us to impose such sufferings
on them. It is our duty to make the
whole world recognize it. Until we
extend our circle of compassion
to all living things, humanity will
not find peace. It is up to us to
educate ourselves and broaden
the extent of our compassion and
empathy to animals. Speak up for
those who cant speak.

about wages; consequently,

women have a right to know if
they are experiencing discrimination and should feel confident in
talking about it.
Some colleges at the
university have career and
internship advisors, focused on
providing advice to students
and giving them the opportunity
to ask appropriate questions
about finding and starting a
career; salary negotiation is an
important tool in this process.
While these positions have been
valuable in their respective
colleges, the university could
benefit from expanding this
type of service across all parts
of campus. Granted, it may be
an extraordinary undertaking
to employ such a position in
each college, but it should be a

long-term goal.
In the short term, the Career
Studio should consider holding
negotiation workshops at least
one to two times throughout the
school year. The Career Studio
provides an excellent service in
helping students get jobs, but
it could also benefit students
to know how to negotiate once
theyve landed that dream career.
Finally, there are a number of
clubs on campus that already do
provide negotiation workshops,
and sometimes, it is as simple as
reaching out and finding them. If
you are a student that intends to
start your career in the next year
or two, pay attention to professional clubs on campus to see if
they will be holding a workshop
aimed at negotiation.
Our university has already

taken strides toward empowering

women, including the Women
in Science and Engineering
community, as well as clubs that
focus on female empowerment.
However, faculty and students
could be doing more to catalyze
womens growth in the professional world. With the legislature
currently making progress on the
wage gap, now is the time to do
everything we can on campus to
fight it as well.
Closing the wage gap may be
possible, but well never know
unless we take the first steps
toward building confidence at a
university level.

COFFEY BREAK

Nobody wants to see your

100-second Snapchat story

nless youre the type of

person who ignores social
media, you know about the
phenomenon that has swept
our world: Snapchat. The tool that
allows you to send videos, pictures
and maybe a risque
photo or two has
become a central
part of social media
conversation with
nearly 400 million
snaps sent per day.
However, along with
any popular social
media platform
Daniel
comes the people
Coffey
who just seem to
use it in the most
annoying way possible.
We all know that guy who opens
your snaps but wont text you back.
Theres also the person who sends you
the one-second snaps, which clearly
achieve nothing. With that said, those
pale in comparison to the following
categories of people that really grind
my Snapchat gears:

THE CONCERT VIDEOGRAPHER

Congratulations, you limited your
happy hour shenanigans enough this
year to afford a ticket to Coachella. You
are so excited to see your favorite band
that you will make sure every single
one of your friends sees them too by
throwing that up on your Snapchat story.
Guess what literally everyone hates
your story. I know it seems like people
watched it because of the high number
next to that little green eye, but I can
guarantee you that people just tapped
through it, hoping you posted something
other than the incomprehensible
blasting bass.
Not only is the quality of sound a literal
cacophony of terrible noise, but your
camera is also nowhere near the quality
you need to really capture the moment.
You may see beautiful lights pouring
over a sea of concertgoers, but all your
followers see is nothing more than what
appears to be a strobe light, causing near
seizures every time somebody taps your
name.
And on top of how terrible the quality
of the snap is, youre probably annoying
any person standing directly behind you.
Just because the person in front of you
thinks youd rather see their LED screen
than the actual performers, doesnt mean
you have to think that way too.

THE CHRONIC SELFIE TAKER

We all take selfies admit it, you
do. I, for one, am definitely guilty of
snapping a few pictures of my ugly
mug from time to time, but there is
nothing worse than a person who just
doesnt know when to stop. Chances
are, if a person is following you on
Snapchat, theyve seen your face
enough. Unless youre trying to show
off a new haircut or the number of
chins you can create by simply looking
down, then youre wasting everybodys
time by uploading an endless chain of
selfies to your story.
At this point in social media history, weve all moved past Facebook
statuses or tweets that say, just woke
up, or walking to class, so why do
you insist that people suddenly care
about it on Snapchat? Beyond that, if
youre really trying to capture an epic
moment, Im sure your users will be
able to see it better absent your face
smiling in the foreground.
I get it selfies can be fun at times,
but before you upload that snap, ask
yourself: do people really care about

what my face is doing right now? Will

anyone actually let the photo last the
entire length of its post? And finally,
am I even attractive enough to be
taking yet another selfie?

THE NEVER-ENDING STORY

AND NOT THE COOL ONE
In a world where social media tells
us that our lives should be shared
at all times, Im here to tell you that
youre probably not as interesting as
you think. Unless you are hanging out
with Beyonc and riding flying Pegasus
on your way to Mars, chances are
people dont want to watch your 100+
second story hell, you might still be
pushing it even in that situation.
If you are that person, you should
constantly remind yourself of the last
time you were excited to watch a story
that lasted that long; chances are,
probably never. While it may be true
that your followers can just choose not
to watch, you will still fall victim to
plenty of eye-rolls and, most likely, the
loss of viewers. Keep your snaps short
and to the point because, who knows,

maybe you will end up on Pegasus

with Beyonc one day, but nobody will
see it if theyre all tired of seeing your
stories to begin with.

OPINION A5

In support of Hillary Clinton for POTUS

hes a woman. Thats why

people turn their heads.
In order to combat this possible drawback, Hillary Clinton
has launched a clever announcement
video in which she is not the focus.
Along with the ad,
she has rebranded
herself and her
campaign by
redesigning her
logo and website.
The logo is
nothing fancy, but
that is what is so
Adrianna appealing about
the H with an
Owens
arrow running
through it. Its
fresh and its new. Theres nothing
pretty about it. This was a huge
step in the right direction because
instead of letting her gender define her
presidential campaign, she depersonalizes her message. She aims it toward
the people.
The logo doesnt say Hillary, and
thats brilliant. Its an H and an arrow.
Thats it.
However, there has been much
controversy, and some crudelyhilarious remakes, over the logo
floating around online. Her Republican opposition has chosen, not so
subtly, their names as their logos.
Ted Cruz and Rand Paul have similar
logos amounting to nothing but their
names and what is most likely a reference to Lady Libertys ever-burning
torch. Marco Rubio, on the other
hand, didnt surprise anyone with his
plain logo that consists of his name
separated by a red star.
Luckily, Clintons marketing team
makes up for her opponents lack of
creativity.
The website that was launched with
her announcement video is also a success. Though prominently displayed,
the first thing that you see when
opening the website is not the picture
of her, but bold white letters that read
This starts with you. Its short and its
sweet. Oh and guess what? Its about
you. The voter.
Now, this is by no means a new
strategy. The plain folks appeal has
been used time and time again with
campaigns that ignite the fire in everyday Americans to vote because (insert
practically any politician here) is the
same as you and me. Whats different
about Clintons campaign is that its
believable.
Her announcement video is, in one
word, diverse. It pictures families,
different races, businessmen, college
students, gay couples and more. In the

world of advertisement, it is said that
all you need to get people hooked is an
animal, a child or an elderly person. Well,
this video does that and so much more.
Its arguably the smartest announcement that has been released so far,
as it not only showcases diversity but
change as well. When Clinton comes
on screen, she announces running
in the 2016 presidential election. She
then continues to say that just like
the diverse group of people that are
featured in her video, she is getting
ready for a change.

One of her prominent quotes,

Everyday Americans need a champion
and I want to be that champion, is
hands down where I applauded her in
her campaign.
Unlike other politicians, she doesnt
use the plain folks appeal as a way to
say that she is just like us normal
people. Instead, she says that she
wants to lead us. She understands the
need for change, and she wants to help
us get there.

we must always remember

It is vital to have an outlet

It is vital to have something
that you love that requires no
sense of urgency or judgment.
I have been lucky enough to
call dance one of my passions
throughout my life. It is
something that brings a feeling of familiarity and nostalgia
to me more than anything else
is able to.
I began dancing when I was
around 3 years old. My mom
took me to The Nutcracker
as a toddler, and I was (so she
says) enthralled by it all
of it. So from there, she put
me in ballet and the rest is
history.
As I grew and time went on,
ballet became more and more

Along the way, I was told

Some days, that is

Throughout my collegiate
career at the University

What I can say for sure, is
that I am the happiest when it

But as I have grown I have

And thats OK.
Its OK that its not my

So, whats the point of this

Take real life lessons from

popular television shows

e all love to
binge watch our
favorite shows
on Netflix, Hulu
or Amazon. I am an obsessive
binge watcher myself. Tragically this
month, my
Wi-Fi took
a plunge
and I
have been
unable to
crawl into
the pillowy
depths of
Lauren

Gray
and obsess
over my
latest Netflix suggestion.
During this time, Ive reflected
on the shows I watch and the
impact theyve had on my life.
Maybe its just my always
trying to find the deeper
meaning mentality, but I feel
like TV shows can teach us
valuable lessons about our
relationships and the way we
view our world. Ive narrowed
down the TV lessons into
four that I found are the most
impactful. By the way, there
are a few spoilers to follow.

CALIFORNICATION

Californication taught me
to stop feeling sorry for myself
when I mess up. Hank Moody
is in an everlasting chase after
his baby mama and soulmate
Karen. But he continually
gets in his own way by acting
without thinking and getting
himself into hairier and
hairier situations. Then when
his finally hits the fan, he
retreats into a self-medicated
state of misery instead of
actually being a big person
and fixing the situations
appropriately. It is only at
the end of the show, when
he finally faces the music for
everything he has done that
he finally ends up with Karen
and lives happily ever after.

politicians have ever dared to say. Her

presidential campaign is officially a

attention of many.
Clinton has learned from her
previous campaigns, and is now back
and getting ready. With her fresh new
redesign, it is a guarantee that she will
pull out all of the stops to keep her
modern campaign feel.

TRAILER PARK BOYS

Trailer Park Boys taught

me that you always stick by

your friends. In the third
season of Trailer Park Boys,
Ricky and Julian accidentally
blow up Bubbles house (a
ramshackle shed in the
park) trying to grow pot and
destroyed everything he ever
had. Bubbles was obviously
furious, especially for the
superficial reason as to why
his house was blown up.
However, instead of dismissing them as friends, Bubbles
gets a new shed to live in,
and he sticks by his buddies
through and through. That is
an extreme case, but it shows
just how much our friends
should mean to us. Throughout the seasons and during
their various shenanigans, the
guys continually prove their
loyalty to one another.

ORANGE IS THE NEW

BLACK

Orange is the New Black

taught me the real dangers of
keeping toxic people in our
lives. Now, Ive only made it
halfway through season two,
but even at this point it is
easy to see how Alex managed
to sabotage every aspect
of Pipers life. Alex heavily
pressures on Piper to help
her in her drug ring, which
ultimately leads to Piper
being sent to prison. She
destroys Pipers relationship
with her fiance while they
are both in prison. Then she
completely screws Piper
over in their hearing at the
prison in Chicago when Alex
convinces her to lie under
oath. Now this doesnt exempt
Piper from the responsibility
of her actions. However, Piper
is aware of the power Alex has
over her and still finds herself
in her grips instead of cutting
Alex out like she shouldve
done the whole time. Had she
realized the type of person
Alex was sooner, and had
the willpower to stay away,
she couldve avoided a lot of
heartache.

PARENTHOOD

Parenthood taught
me just how impactful
autism is on people who are
diagnosed with it. Max, (the
son of Kristina and Adam
Braverman) and Mark (the
photographer who falls in love
with Sarah Braverman) have
autism of varying degrees.
Their characters gave me
incredible insight into what
its like growing up and living
the day-to-day for people with
autism. It is difficult and sad
and I have even felt myself
tearing up as I watched both
of these characters struggle
to navigate relationships
and communicate with the
other characters. Mark has
such a hard time and is so in
love with Sarah and I feel the
stings of pain when he fails at
communicating his feelings
for her. Maxs story is even
more heart wrenching as he
faces high school and bullies
alike while his family tries
everything to help him cope.
Empathy and understanding
are key themes throughout
the stories of these two
characters.
We watch shows because
they are funny, dramatic or
give us a different window to
the world we live in. There
are so many reasons why
I love the shows I do and I
enjoy them all in different
ways. But I think ultimately
its important to see what
our favorite shows teach us
and to sometimes take a step
back and look at how they
affect our lives. So next time
youre browsing through
your favorite titles on a dull
Tuesday night, take the
time to see what you have
taken away from your favorite
shows. Oh, and dont forget
the ice cream.

A HATSTORY:

By Farameitha
Chaerani

THE DOWNFALL AND REVIVAL

OF HISTORYS TOP ACCESSORY

Never did anyone think that bucket hats

would be fashionable, but then came Spring
2015. Though the world has become a place
where dads are accidentally stylish, that
doesnt mean the practicality of the bucket
hat should be overlooked. Like the sunhat,
the bucket hat is now a practical and now a
stylish way of protecting skin from the sun.

THE BASEBALL CAP

No longer just for athletes or those wanting to hide a bad hair day, baseball caps are a
great addition to a casual outfit. For a stylish
take on the classic, make sure to look for a
distressed, vintage style. The baseball cap is a
fantastic fix for a casual summers day; however, beware of its uncanny ability to ruin a
good hair day faster than 100 mph winds.

THE PANAMA HAT

Similar to the fedora, but with a wider, flatter brim, the Panama hat is an essential piece
of any spring wardrobe. With the weather

Beauty queens and glamour girls rejoice,

floppy sun hats are not only for hitting the
beach anymore. They are now acceptable for
daily wear as well. For a twist on the classic
straw sun hat, felt hats of the same shape are
a cosmopolitan take on the beach favorite.

BU

Hats, chapeaus, caps the topper has

many names and many functions. Hats have
been around for nearly as long as the civilizations of mankind, and for centuries they
have been considered to be the pinnacle of
fashion. Simply put, hats are a phenomenal
addition to any outfit whether youre just
looking to spice up an outfit or protect your
precious face from the harsh rays of the sun,
and it has been that way practically since the
dawn of time.
Now, why all of this talk about hats? Do
people still even wear those? The answer is
a resounding yes. In fact, hats are making a
comeback. Legend has it that President Kennedy killed the hat industry the day he was
the first president to forgo a hat at his inauguration ceremony, though there a couple of
other plausible reasons that hats began to go
out of style. One of these reasons was supposedly World War II, where soldiers grew tired of
wearing helmets all of the time.
Wild speculation withstanding, spring has
sprung, and it is clear that hats are back despite JFKs best efforts. The hats of this season
are a contemporary take on classic styles.
Regardless of whether you are into womens
or mens fashions, hats look as if they are here
to stay. Below is a preview of some of the most
fashionable hats for this season, enjoy.

Its always exciting when the
weather gets warmer; theres
more flexibility on what you
can wear. Summer is the best
season to wear different kinds
of outfits and experiment with
different styles, Landis said.
Another option if youre
feeling more edgy this summer is crop tops. With many
different colors, patterns and
different types of fit to choose
from depending on what youre
comfortable with, crop tops are
perfect for a day on campus or
even a night out if dressed up
properly.
You can even get creative
with crop tops and make your

have. Monica Gonzalez, a
sophomore, made this crop top
that shes wearing out of a scarf.
I like getting creative with
my outfits during the summer,
its always faster to work with

too, Gonzalez said.
Lace and floral crop tops have
grown to be even more popular
for festival wear since festivals
always take place in the summertime. Festival wear can
also be worn on a normal day
and can easily be mixed and
matched. High-waisted shorts
and acid-wash denim are also
very popular in the spring and
summer seasons whether it
be for festival wear or campus

If you want to show more

simple yet stylish way to stay

festival ready at the same time.

MENS FASHION

THE STYLE MAN-IFESTO FOR THE MODERN AGE

By Jacob Solis
Fashion itself is a strange concept.
The idea that human expression has
found itself within the most utilitarian of
human inventions that is to say clothing boggles the mind. What is more
fascinating, however, is that the abyss
between what men choose to wear and
what women choose to wear has widened
further than ever.
For example, why is it that men, at least
in the western world, wear pants? Why not
something a bit more free in the crotch
department? Discounting the womans
dress, the togas of ancient Greece and
Rome or even the (relatively) more
novel kilt of Scotland seem like pragmatic
solutions to a very clear problem, that in
modern times has become epidemic with
the advent of skinny jeans.
I am neither anthropologist nor fashion
historian, so the true answers to such
questions elude me. Nevertheless, no
one can stop my rampant speculation,
so without further ado: men have clearly
stopped caring about what they wear and
have become leaves on the wind of society and moreover, that is a terrible thing.
Clothes, for better or for worse, are
at the forefront of human expression.
More often than not, clothes are the first
messengers of personality between two
human beings and can convey far more
than a few meaningless syllables of small
talk. A man dressed in well fitting flannel,
jeans and work boots screams I am rugged. Fear me. Love me, before he ever
gets to utter a word about how many trees
hes cut down that day.
In the same way, a man dressed in an
ill-fitting t-shirt and fedora exudes a very
different message, usually one that leads
with an ill-placed mlady.
The point must be stressed, however,
that neither example is right or wrong.
Whereas moral right and wrong are only
somewhat arbitrary, fashion dos and
donts are completely so. However, what
must be stressed instead is that clothing
are as unique to an individual as a fingerprint or a strand of DNA.
What is distressing is that too many
men leave their front doors wearing a
shirt a size too big combined with pants
that are less than flattering because they
simply do not care. Take for example the
common young man who wears the same
outfit every day: a tee shirt and basketball
shorts with calf high socks and sneakers.
Again, theres nothing wrong with
wearing such an outfit, but the ensemble
carries the connotation that anyone
wearing it will, at some point in the day,
actually play basketball. Thus things
become embarrassing when that never
happens.
Even worse, on the opposite end of the

NO
YES

spectrum there is what may be called

dadcore. Tremendously baggy light
wash jeans, a pastel pique polo one size
too big paired with a dazzlingly white
pair of Nike monarchs exemplify the
style. Both of these outfits/styles are not
good, subjectively speaking, because
each fails to exude any kind of authentic
personality.
Such crises could be avoided if men
simply decided to care. That is not say
that some men dont care, many do, but
in some cruel twist of fate, such men
are the minority. In fact, men are often
derided if they decide to care too much.
A man dressed in Rick Owens will draw
more ire and disapproving glances than
a man dressed in a t-shirt and jeans, even

though both can be equal expressions of

individuality. What is more distressing is
that many men seem to hold the opinion
that dressing well is somehow inherently
feminine, and thus utterly abhorrent.
In the face of all that, I posit as such: go
forth with renewed confidence and rock
your personality on the canvas that is
your body. While togas may be frowned
upon here in the West nowadays, it is
never too late to experiment with the
styles that are already out there and find
a piece of your identity that you never
knew you had.

Two numbers stand out from the firstannual Smackdown for the Cure wrestling show on Thursday, April 16 500 and
1,000.
The first number was the expected attendance of the co-sponsored show from
the Reno Wrestle Factory and the Nevada
Professional Wrestling Club.
The latter was the estimated number
of dollars raised for the Northern Nevada
Childrens Cancer Foundation.
The jam-packed show thrilled fans with
three hours of nonstop wrestling action.
From carnies to disco-dancers, there was
no shortage of gimmicks.
All Pro Wrestling based out of Sacramento, California brought a wealth of talent, including APW Universal Heavyweight
Champion JR Kratos. The chiseled Kratos
defeated three other wrestlers in a fourway elimination to retain his championship gold.
The main event featured a Wolf Pack
Battle Royal with a number of University of
Nevada, Reno students making their wrestling debut including Zack Zolowicz,
Geoffrey Alcaraz, Spencer Wyman and Karl
Fredericks.
Fredericks outlasted 15 other competitors, throwing out RWF trainer Steve Pienkoski, better known by his ring name Paul
The Wrecking Ball Isadora. With the win,
Fredericks earned a contract with the RWF.
After the victory, Frederick celebrated
outside the ring with his four-year-old
nephew, who is in remission from leukemia.

Recovery

being paralyzed.
Associate
Director of Sports Medicine
Ben Anguish explained how
Henderson was put into this
temporary state of paralysis.
The impact to the spinal
cord forced everything to shut
down like he was paralyzed, but
there was no true damage to
the spinal cord, Anguish said.
We found that out with MRIs
and CT scans. At the time of the
injury he had Transient Quadriplegia, where it just shoots
through you and then stops.
Henderson spent that Saturday night through Monday
morning in the hospital before
being released. He had to prove
to the doctors that he had feeling in his legs and was able to
walk before he was cleared to
return home. Although Hendersons spinal cord was not
damaged, to sustain this type
of injury again would put his
playing future in serious doubt.
If he were to sustain this
injury again, it would probably be the end of his football
career, Anguish said. This
isnt something that you want to
keep risking, because over time
you could have a bad enough
injury to the spinal cord that it
will actually damage it and he
could become quadriplegic.
As Henderson would lay
awake at night in constant
pain, the thought of quitting
football would cross his mind.
He pushed through the pain
and self-doubt through an
excruciating rehab regiment.
While he was away, Henderson
admitted that he had garnered
a newfound appreciation of the
game he took for granted.
Football has a higher level of
respect from me now, Henderson said. My mindset before

Ill play to get through college.
Now I enjoy more of the smiles

It has a lot more respect from

Henderson comes into the
spring as a key piece for this
Nevada offense. The 6-foot-5,
220-pound receiver recorded 45
catches for 579 yards and four
touchdowns in nine games of
his sophomore season before
sustaining injury. Henderson

will have a larger role next

season, as he will be the main
target for whoever is named the
starting quarterback. According to assistant head coach and
wide receiver coach Jim Hofher,
Henderson has started to take
on a new leadership role among
the wide receivers since he
sustained his injury.
There is zero doubt in my
mind that his biggest amount
of improvement has been the
leadership he has taken on his

shoulders, Hofher said. With

no prompting or direction, hes
the guy who pulls the receivers
in and makes the end of the day

has never been that guy before.
Whatever next season and

Hofher believes Hendersons

release. I look forward to

working hand in hand with
Coach Musselman and returning the program to lofty
heights.
Stewart has Ivy League
makeup. A former player
at Brown until graduating
in 1994, Stewart earned his
stripes coaching at Brown and
Columbia. Stewarts career
turned 180 degrees when he
joined Oregon States staff in
2008.
While with the Beavers,
Stewart was known for his
recruiting chops, but even
became interim head coach in
2014. It was Stewarts knack for
recruiting that peaked Musselmans interest.
His experience as a former
associate head coach in the
Pac-12 and as a recruiting
coordinator fits perfectly with
the culture we want to establish, Musselman said in a
press release. He has great energy and passion for the game.
Spending this past season as
a member of the Philadelphia
76ers organization as an assistant with the Delaware 87ers in
the NBA Development League
adds another outstanding part
to his impressive coaching
resume.
As a first-time NCAA coach
and new to the college game,

many questioned if Musselman had the recruiting edge to

lure players to the Wolf Pack.
Stewart will help alleviate
those questions.
So does newly-hired coach
Jay Morris, who comes from
Cal State Northridge the
recruiting hotbed of Southern
California.
Jay was highly recommended by CSUN head coach Reggie
Theus, Musselman said in a
release. He is known for being
a tireless worker and has great
recruiting ties in California.
Morris spent five seasons
with the Matadors as an assistant coach. Beforehand,
Morris spent two seasons as
Long Beach States Director of
Operations.
The position that I now
occupy at the University of
Nevada was a highly coveted
position by a number of
respected coaches all across
the country, Morris said in a
release. I am truly honored
that Coach Musselman trusted
in me to be a part of the Wolf
Pack family. Im ready to get
to work and my wife and I are
excited to embrace the Reno
community.
The third piece to Musselmans coaching staff is director
of operations Anthony Ruta.
Akin to Stewart, Ruta has NBA
D-League experience, coaching the Fort Wayne Mad Ants
last season.
Before his stint in Fort Wayne,

Ruta was a graduate assistant

at Arizona State where he
crossed paths with Musselman.
His duties included scouting,
game planning, scheduling
and summer camps, among
others.
I worked with him at Arizona State and we spoke then
about working together in the
future, Musselman said. He
is a tireless worker and has a
great mind for organization.
Anthony will be a great asset
to the Wolf Pack basketball
family.
Musselman completed his
staff with Jermaine Kimbrough
yesterday. Kimbrough has
spent the past nine seasons
at Cleveland State University
including four postseason
appearances. Current Pelicans
guard Norris Cole credits Kimbrough for his success.
Coach
Kimbrough
has
played a huge part in my player
development; always had the
ability to recruit talent and
relate to recruit, Norris said
in a press release. He also understands that theres more to
life than basketball. He will be
a great addition for your staff.
While Musselman hasnt
positioned each of the coaches
exact roles, the four-man
group has roots throughout the
country.

er, but I think it has helped him

as a young man, Hofher said.
Whatever his own particular
perspective is on life has probably changed from what it had
been before this injury.
The days from that frigid,
snow-filled November day to
now have been a hard earned
learning experience for Henderson. He has learned one of
lifes greatest lessons, which is
you dont know what you have
until its gone. For those long,

agonizing hours in that hospital bed, football was slipping

through this wide receivers
fingers. Unlike most people in
similar situations, Henderson
got lucky and gets to catch
touchdown passes on Saturdays. Hell be looked to do that
more often than not next fall.

Deitrich pitched for 6.1 innings

and didnt walk a batter.
Sundays game was a blowout,
similar to game one. Nevada hit
three home runs, including a
grand slam from Austin Byler.
Junior
left-handed
pitcher
Christian Stolo pitched seven
innings giving up just two runs
on four hits. He improved to 4-1
on the year with a team best 3.06
ERA.
Junior Ryan Howell is still in

the top five in the nation in runs

batted in and home runs. Byler
is third nation-wide with 51
runs.

Quarterback Cody Fajardo (17) evades a tackler against BYU on Saturday, Oct. 18 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Fajardo, who is
considered a day three draft pick, is looking to be the second Nevada quarterback to be drafted in the last 10 years.

Fajardo belongs in NFL

he last six NFL Drafts have

featured a Nevada player,
from guys like Joel Bitonio
to Duke Williams to Colin
Kaepernick. This year, the Wolf Packs
best chance at making it seven
straight rests on
the shoulders
of quarterback
Cody Fajardo.
Prior to his
senior season,
Fajardo was
projected by
many to be an
NFL draft pick.
Stone
However, after a
Harper
lackluster senior
season that saw
him throw 11 interceptions and his
completion percentage dip under 60
percent, doubts started to creep in.
ESPN NFL draft expert Mel Kiper Jr.
had Fajardo as his ninth-best quarterback prospect and that was only after
USC quarterback Cody Kessler and
Michigan State quarterback Connor
Cook decided to return to school to
play for their senior seasons. Kiper
also mentioned that this year was a
poor class in terms of signal callers.
To quote former Indianapolis Colts
GM Bill Tobin ,Who the hell is Mel
Kiper anyways?

Despite what the doubters say, I

believe Fajardo has done enough to
show that he should be drafted in this
years NFL draft. A glance at his record
more than proves he has what it takes
to succeed at the next level.
Fajardo has the production. I
know that this is a recycled stat
that everyone and their mother has
thrown around, but it has merit.
Fajardo is one of two quarterbacks in
NCAA history to pass for 9,000 yards
and rush for 3,000 yards in a season.
Although his stats dropped in his final
year, he was dealing with a brand
new receiving corps which included
Kendall Brock, the leading rusher
from the year before (no I didnt say
that wrong, I did say rusher.).
Fajardo also has impressed in
off-season workouts. Besides the
East-West shrine game where every
quarterback laid an egg, at the NFL
scouting combine he was able to
finish top five positionally in the
40-yard dash, the 20-yard shuttle
and the three-cone drill. Fajardo
also impressed at pro day, throwing
from under center (another knock on
Fajardo was that he didnt play under
center in college.).
Fajardo also has that it factor that
is a must at the quarterback position.
He is a nice guy who is willing to have

a conversation with almost anybody

he meets, but also carries a certain
confidence and swagger on the field
that helps him as a player and a
leader.
But dont just take it from me;
analysts from places besides the
newspaper of where Fajardo went to
school have high praise for him. In
an NFL.com draft profile on Fajardo,
author Lance Zierlein had this to say
about him:
Productive run-pass quarterback
who was forced to carry a substantial
percentage of the offensive success on
his shoulders.
Zierlein also went on to say that
Fajardo was a willing learner, and
while Zierlein only thinks of Fajardo
as a quarterback with potential to be a
scheme quarterback, Theres a chance
he could do much more. If a team
with a spread offense is able to get
Fajardo with a sixth or seventh round
draft and then have him develop for a
couple years, theres even a possibility
that eventually Fajardo could even be
a starter in this league. Crazier things
have happened; Tim Tebow won a
playoff game for Gods sake.

been one for the ages. She didnt
pick up a basketball until she was 12
years old. Mungedi averaged a mere
five minutes a game as a walk-on
freshman at Nevada, before starting

11 games as a sophomore.
Then came her coming out party.
Mungedi won back-to-back MWC
Defensive Player of the Year awards
her junior and senior season. She left
her mark in the Nevada record books,
setting single-seasons record in blocks
(74) and career blocks (162).
Now Mungedi becomes the tallest
player on the worst team in the WNBA,
Tulsa, who finished 12-22 in 2014.
In a Sagebrush profile story about
Mimi published in 2012, she alluded
that basketball was Mungedis destiny.
God gave me these long legs and
I felt like thats what he wanted me to
do, she said.

Sweep propels Wolf Pack

By Ryan Suppe
Last weekend Nevada squared off
with Mountain West leader San Diego
State. The Wolf Pack dominated the
Aztecs in a three-game sweep, taking
a two-game advantage in the MW and
improving its record to 31-9 (16-5 MW)
on the season.
When the Wolf Pack earned its 30th
win on Saturday it became the second
fastest team to reach 30 wins in the
schools history. Nevada remains in the
top 30 in most polls, and it is the only
MW team consistently in the mix.
Senior Kewby Meyer was named MW
Player of the Week for his performance
last week. He batted .600 with 12 hits,
one home run and 12 RBI in one game
vs. San Francisco and three vs. San
Diego State. He hit for the cycle in the

sweep of the Aztecs. He improved his

season statistics to .339, three home
runs and 36 RBI.
Meyer wasnt the only Nevada
player who played well. The Wolf Pack
outscored San Diego State 38-12, and
the Pack reached 18 hits in three of the
four games last week.
We looked like a professional team
in the batters box for three days in a
row now, Nevada head coach Jay
Johnson said in a press release. [todays win] is about as good as it gets,
because thats a tough lineup and a
good opponent. Our guys were awesome all weekend long and Im proud
of their focus and execution.

HENDERSONS
ROAD TO RECOVERY

afternoon at
Falcon Stadium, Nevada
wide receiver Hasaan
Henderson was seen lying
motionless on the cold
and desolate turf against
the Air Force Falcons. As
he was attended to for several minutes, there was an
eerie silence throughout
the stadium as the spectators waited for a sign of
movement from Henderson until he was taken off
the field on a stretcher.

is participating in spring
practice at the same high
level athletically, but with
a fresh perspective for the
game he loves. For a brief

period in that Colorado

Springs hospital, there
was doubt that he would
be able to walk onto a
football field ever again.

After a routine tackle, the
hit Henderson absorbed
resulted in a spontaneous
state of quadriplegia. This
means he temporarily
experienced the effects of
being paralyzed. AssociSee RECOVERY Page A10
