Genre Remediation Reflection

For my genre remediation about my essay on feminism, I decided that creating a protest
sign would be more than fitting. Throughout history, this was often a way for feminist to
communicate their thoughts and ideas about related issues to the public. The sign shows a female
holding up a poster with the gender signs reading female is greater than male. Above this
image it says this is NOT feminism. Below that picture, there is a man and woman shaking hands
with the same gender signs this time reading female is equal to male and above the image
reads THIS is feminism. My protest sign illustrates that feminism doesnt mean that women
wish to be superior to men, they want to be seen as equal. This is a big misconception in society
and has been ever since the birth of this movement. One of the biggest myths in this movement is
that the women that support it are men-haters. For the longest, feminists have tried to eliminate
that idea. More often today, we actually see feminists making a greater effort to reach out to men.
I think that this sign could be seen at any feminist event or rally. This is such a big issue in the
movement, signs like this could probably be spotted at all kinds of protests. The audience would
more than likely be men. They want them to understand that equality is what they are asking for,
not superiority.
The purpose for a protest sign is to reach as many people as you can without necessarily
speaking to those people directly. In making my sign, I chose to use stick figures to represent the
male and female. I wanted my sign to kind of mock the male and female stereotypes (men
represented in blue and women in the triangle dresses represented in pink.) I wanted it to be as
general as possible while making a bold statement that is relevant to the feminist movement. I
feel like I did a good job of capturing that. I talked a lot about equality in my essay so to me, this
sign was the perfect genre remediation. I was contemplating doing a comic strip about a gender

neutral superhero. Although it was a great idea to me, I struggled to find a way to make it
relevant to feminism in a way that represents the points I had made in my essay. I decided that
the protest sign was the better, more appropriate project. I was still able to use my creativity and
add a little bit of sarcasm and irony by using the pink and blue gender stereotypes that have been
used since the beginning of time. Feminists often times like to use hyperboles and metaphors to
get their points across. I feel like my protest sign does a great job of representing an issue that
important to feminists, all while using creativity and illustration.
