INDICATION

For
Constipation.

ACTION
The drug passes
unchanged into
the colon where
bacteria break it
down to organic
acids that increase
the osmotic
pressure in colon
and slightly
acidify the
colonic contents,
resulting in an
increase in stool
water contents,
stool softening,
laxative action.

SIDE EFFECTS

Flatulence
Abdominal Fullness
Belching
Diarrhea
Nausea
Intestinal Cramps

NURSING
CONSIDERATIONS

Assess History of
allergy to lactulose, or
low-galactose diet.
Assess abdominal
bowel sounds.
serum electrolytes,
serum ammonia levels

PATIENT TEACHINGS

Effects are seen 24 to 48


hours.

Notify Dr if diarrhea persists


for more than 24 hrs, could be
a sign of overdose, and need
for med adjustment
