Overview of the Lesson


Lesson Summary:
In this lesson, students will understand how to analyze a piece of literature by
using comprehension strategies such as predicting and asking questions.

Whiteboard with vocab words and definitions written on it

Content
Factual Content:
The students will learn how to analyze the assigned piece of literature and
have a discussion about the information that they read.
Vocabulary:
Tier 1:
Microphone an instrument used for amplifying or recording something
Binoculars an instrument with a lens for each eye, used for viewing far away
things

Tier 2:
Spy a person who secretly collects and reports information on the activities,
movements, and plans of an enemy
Message a verbal, written, or recorded way of communicating something to
someone
Tier 3:
Jigsaw a puzzle with a picture on it cut into many pieces of different shapes
that have to be fitted together

Students will analyze the literature.

I will informally assess the students by listening to each student read aloud. I
will also ask critical thinking questions and informally assess the students
based on their answers and any other discussion topics that are talked about.

Procedures:
Set up:
o The vocab words with their definitions must be already written on the white board
and visible for the students to see.

Anticipatory Set: (3 min)


o Call Lesley and Gianna over to the reading group table. Have 3 sets of Spy Tools
books for each student and myself. The teacher copy will have my post its and
notes already inside on the pages. Pass out the books to the students. Ask students
about the title, author, and genre of the book.
Step 1: (5 min)
o Make predictions about the book based on the title and photographs.
o Ask the students what they already know about spies and the tools that they use to
help them.
o Look at the index and think about what the students might learn from the book.
Step 2: (5 min)
o Go over the vocabulary words for this text (spy, camera, jigsaw, microphone,
message, binoculars, homonyms)
Step 3: (5 min)
o Take a picture walk through the book and go over the critical thinking questions.
Pg. 5 what could be some good things about having such a small
camera?
Pg. 8 how do you think the pigeons know where to go?

Pg. 12 how do you think using a coin that looks the same as other coins
could be a problem for a spy?
Pg. 14 why do you think its important for spies to keep things a secret?
Step 4: (8 min)
o Have students take turns reading each page of the book aloud.
Step 5: (4 min)
o Ask the students if they have learned anything new about spies or spying.
