The Hitching Post:

Great food, friendly service, minutes away.
By Katie Friedman

Specialties served
with pride

Spring has sprung, and the

welcome mat is out at the
Hitching Post, where a newlyremodeled bar and dining area
combine to set the perfect backdrop for relaxing over a refreshing drink and a delicious meal.
Conveniently
located
between Clearwater and Annandale on Hwy. 24, the Hitching
Post has built a strong reputation for its fine food and friendly atmosphere. Donny and
Stacy Handeland invite Maple
Lake-area residents to take a
short drive and discover what
many of their neighbors already
know that good eating and
top-notch service are really just
minutes away.
Were just nine miles from
Maple Lake, said Donny.
Were proud to be one of
Maple Lakes favorite spots to
go.
As general manager and head
chef, Donnys been at the Hitching Posts helm for three of the
four years its been open. His
brother, Tom, who runs a similar establishment in Marshall as
well as LeRoys in Cottonwood, took ownership of the
former Lake Center Bar and
Grill in April 2011. From its
inception, the Hitching Post
has been a busy place a popular spot for people of all ages to
gather, relax and unwind.

Starting out in the late 70s,

the Handeland brothers share
nearly four decades of restaurant
industry experience. Donny
who honed his culinary skills at
St. Cloud Technical and Community College before cooking
at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and
Lincoln Del is proud to offer
a generous menu that includes
everything from the great American staples to a couple of his
own mouthwatering in-house
specialties.
We have our own smoker
now, Donny said. We smoke
beef brisket in the kitchen, and
we serve beef brisket sandwiches in two different styles. Its
really good its delicious.
In addition to several new
sauces and a new chicken dish
thats fantastic, Donny said,
We cook our own ribs here,
too. And we make each one of
our rib dishes per order theyre
not kept hot on a steam table all
day.

A two-time spare rib blueribbon winner at Taste of Buffalo, Handeland takes his reputation for making excellent food
in stride, but not for granted.
His menu, he said, is in a constant process of re-evaluation
and change, and new items are
added on a regular basis.
An intrepid staff of about 20
employees adds its own personal touches to the Hitching
Posts warm ambience, providing great food with attentive
service.
Our staff is really good,
said Donny.
They
are
unmatched, if you ask me. They
are experienced, theyre wellrounded. We have great bartenders and great servers. They
really are excellent. Im very
proud of all of them.
His wife, Stacy, manages the
wait staff and handles administrative duties.

Stacy is the glue of the

place, Donny said. Without
her, wed crumble.
Positive change
The Hitching Post underwent a tasteful remodeling
process over the winter, closing
for the month of February and
reopening in March with a floor
plan thats more open and yet,
more intimate, as well.
Most notable is the expanded
bar: Converted from an L-shape
to something more like a horseshoe, it seats nearly twice as
many people as before, and is
much more conducive to eye
contact and conversation.
The new bar is beautiful,
Donny said. People love it. Its
changed our whole bar crowd.
People who never sat here
before sit here all the time now.
By having three corner areas,
four people can sit and talk to
each other at each one. Its really changed the whole character
of our bar, and its really
increased our bar crowd, too.

Protect the environment with safe boating

2015 Fishing Seasons

Recreational boating reaches

its peak when the weather
warms up and people take to
waterways in droves. Spending a
day on the water enjoying the
scenery or trying your luck at
fishing are popular pastimes.
Following proper boating
practices and etiquette can protect everyone onboard. Although
ensuring passenger safety
should be a priority, safeguarding against environmental
impacts while boating also
should be a concern.
Marinas and various marine
areas can become contaminated
with pollutants generated from
boating activities. Boat cleaning, fueling and marine head discharge are just a few of the pollutants that can find their ways
into the water. A past study
found that boat anchoring also
is a considerable threat to
marine habitats, as vulnerable
ecologies can be damaged by

anchors.
Although there are regulations in place to protect marine
life and ecosystems, these rules
aren't always adhered to. Recreational boaters can do their part
to keep oceans, bays, rivers, and
lakes pristine by adhering to
some sound advice.
Reduce engine exhaust.
Whenever possible, row, paddle
or use sails to decrease engine
use and subsequent exhaust.
When engines must be used, do
not idle unnecessarily. Always
steer clear of the aft of the boat,
where fuel fumes and carbon
monoxide can cause serious
health implications.
Keep trash on the vessel.
Do not discard any items over
the side of the boat. Even seemingly harmless items can impact
the environment. Store garbage
in a bag and dispose of it properly when you return to the
marina or dock. Secure items

onboard so they will not blow

off and end up in the water.
Avoid antifouling paints.
Antifouling paints are special
paints applied to the underside
of vessels to prevent or slow
down the growth of barnacles
and other organisms. Maritime
New Zealand notes that these
paints can harm other sea life
and prove dangerous when
scraped off and not discarded
properly.
Keep boats in proper working order. Poorly maintained
boats may harm the environment. Inefficiently working
engines can produce more
exhaust and contaminate the air
and water. Oil and other mechanical fluids can leak into the
water and affect the marine environment. Proper maintenance
helps keep boats safe and minimizes their impact on the environment.
Use pump-out stations.

Pump out stations at marinas

enable boaters to safely dispose
of the contents from sanitary
systems without waste ending
up in the water. Commercial
ships, such as tankers and bulk
cargo carriers, have the added
threat of ballast water. Ballast
water keeps vessels buoyant.
However, when this water is discharged at the next port of call,
it can transfer biological materials, like bacteria and plants,
from foreign waters. These
materials can compromise the
integrity of ecological systems.
Respect marine ecosystems. Boaters who plan to enter
the water and explore should
tread delicately. Coastal areas
often play home to birds and
other wildlife. Use caution
around reefs and habitats.
Safe boating involves following the rules of the water and
also keeping marine environments clean and protected

Bountiful, healthy trees can

be beautiful to behold and
important contributors to a
thriving environment. According to American Forests, a nonprofit conservation organization, a tree can absorb as much
as 40 pounds of carbon dioxide
per year and can sequester one
ton of carbon dioxide by the
time the tree reaches age 40.
The United States Forest Service adds that trees placed properly around a home can reduce air
conditioning
and heating
demands considerably.
Many homeowners are content to leave healthy trees
alone. However, trees eventually must be pruned or removed if
they become safety risks or
pose other threats. Trees with
roots that are damaging home
foundations or those with
limbs overhanging property
limits or power lines can be
troublesome. Although home-

owners can handle relatively

minor tree maintenance, for a
variety of reasons, many tree
projects are best left to the professionals.

Avoiding injury
is job one.
Professional tree contractors
recognize and understand the
hazards associated with tree and
limb removal. Many operate in
accordance with national or
local guidelines to maintain
proper clearance of power lines
and structures.
Trimming trees close to
electrical lines puts a person at
risk of being electrocuted. Professionals know how to protect
themselves and prevent power
outages, which can result when
limbs come into contact with
power lines.
Professional tree services
will use machinery appropriate
for the task. Cherrypickers and
cranes may lift workers to the

correct height to work on trees,

while do-it-yourselfers who rely
on climbing trees or using ladders are at risk of injury.

The importance of
preventing damage
to the tree.
Many tree services understand the proper way to prune
trees to minimize stress and
damage to the tree itself.
Novice pruners may inadvertently do more harm than good,
resulting in proliferation of tree
disease or shock. Improper
pruning technique also can lead
to an unsightly tree.

Liability is a
responsibility.
A professional tree service
will possess the correct liability and worker's compensation
insurance. This protects homeowners against litigation
should someone be injured
while tree work is being done.

Homeowners who damage

neighboring properties when
cutting down a tree may find
that they are not covered by
their homeowner's insurance
policies. This can be a costly
mistake that's easily avoided by
simply hiring a fully insured
tree removal service.

Always use the right

right tools.
The right tools can mean the
difference between a job done
correctly and one that results in
disaster. Professional arborists
and tree services have acquired
the training, tools and techniques to perform the job safely. This includes using the
right tools to tackle the job.
Ropes, pulleys, cranes, stump
grinders, and other heavy
machinery are just a few of the
tools tree services have at their
disposal that the average homeowner does not.

A more eco-friendly lawn is just steps away

Maintaining a lush lawn is a
healthy and rewarding hobby that
affords homeowners to spend
some time outdoors in nature.
Lawn enthusiasts can make their
hobby even healthier by adopting several eco-friendly lawn care
strategies that not only make for
a healthier lawn, but a healthier
planet as well.
Responsible landscaping has
grown increasingly popular in
recent years, as more and more
homeowners are adopting ecofriendly lawn care practices in
the same way they have
embraced environmentally conscious behaviors in other areas
of their lives. The following are
a handful of ways lawn care
enthusiasts can incorporate eco-

friendly practices into their landscaping routines.

Maintain an appropriate
grass height. When temperatures
start to peak in summer, homeowners may be tempted to cut
their grass as close as possible
so they can reduce the number of
afternoons they spend riding or
pushing a mower in the hot sun.
But cutting too low makes the
grass increasingly susceptible to
infestations and disease, and such
problems may need to be remedied with potentially harmful
pesticides if no other approach
proves effective. Even if it
means an extra afternoon or two
mowing under the hot sun,
maintaining an appropriate grass
height can lead to a healthier

lawn, as longer grass soaks up

more sunlight, allowing it to
grow a deep root system that
will help a lawn survive drought
and other potential problems.
Cut back on harmful pesticides. Many homeowners now
prefer to avoid pesticides at all
costs, but sometimes pesticides
are a last resort when lawns are
falling victim to harmful insects
and organisms. Homeowners
who want to embrace more ecofriendly lawn care practices can
cut back on their use of pesticides, first trying more environmentally friendly options. For
example, biopesticides are made
from naturally occurring materials, including animals, plants,
bacteria, and certain minerals.

According to the United States

Environmental
Protection
Agency, biopesticides are often
inherently less toxic than more
conventional pesticides. In addition, biopesticides typically
affect only the pest causing the
problem, whereas broad spectrum pesticides may affect surrounding organisms, such as
birds and mammals, in addition
to the targeted pest. The EPA
(www.epa.gov) advises homeowners hoping to use biopesticides first learn about managing
pests so they can effectively remedy problems on their properties.
Harvest rainwater. Lawns
need water, especially when temperatures rise in the summer. But
watering lawns can have an

adverse effect on your community's water supply, draining that

supply and hurting the community in the long run. Homeowners who can harvest rainwater
can drastically reduce their
impact on their community
water supply, thereby helping
the planet and their community,
especially if they reside in
locales where water resources are
traditionally scarce. When rainwater is harvested, it is collected
from downspouts before it washes into nearby sewage systems.
Many lawn and garden retailers
sell rainwater harvesting systems, which homeowners can
install themselves or pay a landscaping professional to install
for them.

Lay mulch down around

trees, shrubs and flower beds.
Trees, shrubs and flower beds
need water, especially in the
summer when rising temperatures pose a threat to plants.
Homeowners can cut back on the
water they use to protect those
plants by laying organic mulch
in the spring. Organic mulch
conserves moisture in soil, promoting stronger roots in plants
and helping homeowners cut
back on the amount of watering
they need to maintain a garden
that's both healthy and pleasing
to the eye. Organic mulch,
which might be made of bark, is
also heavy, making it hard for
ugly weeds that rob plants of
water to thrive.

The benefits of hiring professional landscapers

The flowers are blooming,
and the grass has begun to grow,
making spring a great time for
homeowners to turn their attention to landscaping. Those who
aren't looking forward to dusting off their lawnmowers and rethreading their string trimmers
may want to hire professional
landscapers to tend to their
lawns and gardens.
A recent joint study by the
National Gardening Association, Residential Lawn and
Landscape Services and the
Value of Landscaping found that
homeowners spend roughly $45
billion per year on professional
lawn and landscape services, as
nearly 30 percent of all households across the United States

use at least one type of lawn or

landscape service. The rising
use of lawn care services is
indicative of homeowners'
appreciation of the convenience
and craftsmanship professional
services can provide. While the
impact professional landscapers
can have on a property's aesthetic appeal is considerable, homeowners also benefit from working with professional landscapers in various other ways.
Ti me savi ngs: One of the
biggest benefits of leaving lawn
care to the professionals is the
amount of time it will save for
the average homeowner. Lawns
generally need to be mowed
once per week during the spring
and summer seasons and,

depending on the size of the

property, that can take an hour
or more. Add the time it takes to
clean up clippings, mulch landscaping beds and edge the property, and homeowners can
expect to devote a significant
chunk of their weekends to caring for their lawns. Lawn services employ a few workers who
make fast work of the job, leaving homeowners time to enjoy
their weekends however they see
fit.
Reduced ri sk for i njury:
Maintaining a landscape is hard
work, and those unaccustomed
to this type of activity may find
themselves winded or at risk of
injury. Improper use of lawn
equipment also is a safety haz-

DeZiel Heating

ard. Leaving the work to professionals can help homeowners

avoid strained backs, lacerations, pulled muscles, sunburns, and any other dangers
that can result when tackling
landscaping projects.
Fi nanci al s avi ngs : On
the surface, hiring a landscaping
service may seem like a costly
venture. However, after crunching some numbers, many
homeowners realize that doing
the work themselves may cost
more in the long run than hiring
a professional landscaping service. Homeowners who decide to
go it alone must purchase
expensive equipment, and those
lawn tools will require routine
maintenance, which costs addi-

tional money. Inexperienced

homeowners may incur extra
fees to "fix" mistakes that occur
during the learning process.
Each year, new seed, fertilizer,
mulch, pesticides, and other
supplies also must be purchased. But professional lawn
care services typically charge a
set fee per month, and that fee
covers the maintenance of both
your property and the equipment
needed to keep that property
looking great.
Know-how: Many professional landscapers know how to
address lawn care issues that
may arise throughout the year.
They will know how to deal
with dry patches of lawn or
poorly draining areas, and they

also can make recommendations

on plants that will thrive under
certain conditions.
One-stop shoppi ng: Certain landscaping services provide many different options for
prospective customers. Basic
lawn cuts may be one package,
but there also may be services
for seasonal seeding, weeding,
leaf clean-up, and winterizing.
Co ns i s tent
mai ntenance: Homeowners who frequently travel or spend much of
their summers away from home
often find that lawn care companies are a wise investment.
Established weekly schedules
ensure the landscape always will
look its best whether homeowners are home or out of town.
