Why Study Civil Engineering

When I was at elementary school, I have a dream to be an engineer

because I see my cousins curriculum vitae. It was very cool. I study hard to
realize my dream. Now, I am a last semester student in civil and environmental
engineering department, Universitas Gadjah Mada. I study civil engineering
since August 2010 after graduated from senior high school. I can study civil and
environmental engineering after I pass the SNMPTN at June 2010. The first I
imagine about civil engineering, like most people, is all about structural building,
and I think it will be hard for me. But, with the passage of time, I found the
rhythm of study civil engineering because in civil engineering I not only study
about structural building, but also study about hydrology engineering,
environmental engineering, project management, geotechnical engineering and
transport engineering. The topic that makes me very interesting is about railway
engineering.
I am very amazing to study about transportation, especially about railway
engineering, because in childhood, I like to see a train drove fast at railway. But,
after I grow older, I realized that there are many problems about public
transportation. Almost people have experience trapped in a traffic jam. The
existence of private car fulfills the street and exceeds the capacity. Some
people compete with others to show that they have a car. But not all people use
their car with that reason. Many people choose to use car because the public
transports facility was so bad and unsatisfied. We can see that a bus with black
smoke and porous body milling around town. The bus put up passenger
anywhere not only in halte or terminal and aggravating the traffic jam. That
problems occured not only in big city like Jakarta, but also in satelite city like
Sleman near Yogyakarta. The problem became more severe when the time
near Iedul Fitri or new year celebration. Trip from Jakarta to Yogyakarta require
more 1 day if use cars or buses. But, when we choose using a train, the time
required by the trip same as other general days. Nevertheless, train also not a
transportation mode that has no problems.
In structural building topic, I study not only about high rise building, but
also simple structural building. From this topic, I know that a big number of
houses dont meet the requirements of SNI, for example the diameter of steel

reinforcement is too small and the installation doesnt meet the standart so
when an earthquake occur, the structural became failure. Its important, but not
all people know about that. After study about that topic, I can share about this
topic to my family who wants to renovation his house, nevertheless it wasnt
applied.
In hydraulically topic, I like to study about hydroelectric power plan that
generally applied at big dam structure, like Mr Sutami Dam in Malang, because
its one of renewable electric power plan that can be applied in most places in
Indonesia.
In geotechnical topic, I most interest about cliff protection. I want to know,
why it must be reinforced and how to make it protected. Its not only about what
material should be choosen and applied, but also the artistic landscape that I
can see when I pass the road with cliff protection like at Pacitan or Gunung
Kidul.
All of these things calls Indonesian future generation to study for
decrease the problems and develop new technology. I felt called to study about
that. In some course, I feel enjoy to study about that. In civil engineering, we
were taught to view the actual problems and discussed what we can do, with
the risk that may occur. We were carried to Semarang and Bali to see the other
problem occur in this country. Then, we know that the problem we have
discussed in class wouldnt be reliable at all.
After I go deep into civil engineering, I know that civil engineering have a
huge role in society because we study not only about physical thing like
structural building, road or dam, but also study about the system about
structural, transportation and other to socialize some new things to the good
future community development. A few years away, I hope my friends and I who
study civil and environmental engineering have a chance to improve and correct
the mistake about the physical and systematic problems about structural highrise building, transportation, geotechnical, project management, hydrology,
disaster management etc. Improvement about railway system and infrastructure
is one thing that I want to get involved there. Train like TGV or Shinkansen in
Indonesia? Why not?
