n:

1985 has started, and what exciting MESSAGES FROM MARY AND BERT we have! They ask ue to join
them in praise as they say "Praise be to God for His great and wonderful gift to us..His Son,
Jesus Christ, our Savior!

As we leave this holiday season when we celebrate the birth of the

Son of God, and as we come into a new year with its hopes and desires to do better, let us

always remember the gift that God has given us in His Son. May we do all we can to serve Him

and to share His love with others who do not yet know the joy of walking with the Lord."

"We want to thank all of you again who make it possible forus to give life and hope to these
sweet and wonderful children in Cagayan Valley Children's Home.
sent special gifts for our Christmas.

Thank you also to those who

One church gave money to purchase food for Christmas

dinner..and It was delicious. Others sent money to purchase gifts or sent gifts and cards.
They are all appreciated very much and show the love of the Lord in you, and that we are
teaching these children. Because you show love they are learning to love and give."
FAMILY GROWTH: "We have again had a small population explosion. In October five children
joined our special family here. They all came from the province of Tfugao, a mountainous
area. Samuel, 3 yrs, old, is d:ill not walking, but really fattening up and becoming a nor
mal little boy. He is an illegitimate child and was mostly ignored. John was 9 mos. old,
and is the younger brother of our Joel, who came to us at the age of 2 mos. Even though
the family could not care for their other children we have this new son of theirs(birth con

trol among the poor and uneducated is a real problem). John was thin and could not yet sit
by himself, but mv is almost op to normal for 1 yr. old. Julio was adopted by a couple who
had no children after 12 years of marriage. But after a few months they realized that Julio
was not normal..he could not eat normally, seemed to have seizures, and was behind in develop
ment. Doctors and hospitals could not help. We took him to Manila and they suspect epilepsy,
and we suspect cerebral palsy also. We would appreciate your prayers for this sweet boy,
that we may really be able to help him. He gets sick easily, then has such a hard time brea
thing, and his body is almost always still at that time. He is 1 1/2 yrs. old, but very small,
and can do nothing for himself. Maureen is 12 years old and is mostly blind and seems deaf.
We have found out that she has operable cataracts. The first of Feb. I will be taking her to
Manila to see if anything can be done for her
hearing, and then the surgery for her eyes
will be scheduled.

Because she cannot see

or hear she, of course, is not normal in

many ways, but seems to be a bright girl,
can take care of herself, is helpful in
work around
the house and watching the
other children. She has a special talent
in being able to mold animals and people
out of clay. We pray that she will be
able to see well and to hear, and I am
sure she can be a contributing member of
society.

Nov. 28 our family was blessed with twins,

Fe(Faye) and Freddie, 9 mos. old. They
are 3rd degree malnourished, with Fe being
the weakest. She cannot yet sit by her
self, but is improving daily. Fred is
now sitting alone and beginning to try
to move on his own. -They are beautiful

children, and we praise the Lord that because of your love and help we can again save these
children, from death, and hopefully bring them up to love and serve our Lord.

Jan 4 Joycelyn joined our family, the daughter of a widowed student.

were very sad to lose this little man who seemed so
sweet and smart, but we know he is with the Lord.
One of our children has been released to his parents.

We are sorry to lose Melbourne, who is 1 1/2, but

are happy that his family can be together again.
They live in Aparri, so we are able to see him now

the parents."

GENERATOR: "We want to express our thanks again to

all of you who made our generator possible.

It has

been a great blessing to us as the electricity has

been on and off. Without it we would always be with
out water and the poor laundry ladies would really
have a hard time washing everything by hand. Also,
with the rainy season upon us, it would be so difdifficult to get diapers and clothes dry.

Thank you again so much."

AyiNOUNCING:

"In Nov. we were blessed by the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Prultt our forwarding

agents The reason for their visit was the birth of their 10th grandchild.
Jordan Lee Prultt

CHRISTptAS: "During Christmas holidays many of our '

children were able to go to their parents* or rela
tives homes for vacation.

Some of the staff took

children to their homes, which Is a blessing to the

child. We were very happy when school was about to
resume and our family was again complete.

Most of

the children had a very happy time. Two of our boys,

however, gave an unhappy time to their father as they
kept begging him to bring them back here. We praise
the Lord that they are so happy here in our love, but
do feel sorry for the father and how he must have
felt when his children did not want to stay home for
a few days. We pray that all these children will grow
to be wonderful Christian parents with homes filled
with the love and joy of Christ."

what joy we had together as we remembered the birth of our
Lord, and God's love for us.
How fiankful we were for the help of JOY COLLINS In pre

programs, and for taking over while we were In Manila. The

help that Joy has been to us will soon be very apparent, as

she has just left us to return to the States, with no plans
to come back to live In the Philippines. Joy has been with
us since 1979, making and repairing clothes, landscaping,
being a grandma, and taking charge when necessary. She has
done so many other things that they can not all be listed
here. We can never give enough thanks to Joy for all her
help; we just praise the Lord for sending her to us, and
at a time when we did not realize we even needed her.

Three busy months and again we have MESSAOES FROM MARY AND PERT. She is savoring a very
special time as Mary says: "As I am writing this newsletter T am sitting in the lounge of
the vTesuit Retreat House in Raguio Citv, looking out at a beautiful view of Cod's creation.
Our annual missionary retreat has just finished and we are all refreshed and renewed and

ready to get back to work for the Lord. How we praise tlie Lord for this beautiful place to
relax and enjoyand how we praise Him for the wonderful fellowship we have had in His Love
these 3 days. It felt so good to feel the cooler air, smell the pine trees(although some
what smaller than Oregon pines) and walk the hills. But even more invigorating and refresh
ing was the fellowship and sharing together. There were 63 people present. Including child
ren, from Aparrl, Enrile, Manila, Cebu and Oavao."
GROWTH; "The last three months have been very busy and interesting. We have grown again
by 5 children, Elvie and Avelyn came together,9?at 7 months and 5 months of age, looking
like twins. Elvie's mother had died and they had mo monev for milk and she.was 2nd degree
malnourished. Avelyn is Illegitimate and needed attention and care. Both weighed 11 lbs.

(the same weight as Jordan at 2 months). Two days later Ahner joined our family at 1 day
old and 5 1/2 lbs. He also is illegitimate. He has grown very fast.
Anallza

came next at 1 yr. old, weighing 11 lbs.

She cannot yet sit bv herself or turn

Her mother had been sick and in the hospital much of the time since her birth.

The

only income was what the father made driving tricy(try-see) (A motorcycle with sidecarused
as a taxi) for someone else, and was gone from the house all day. The aunt was a student
and was gone from the house most of the time. Thev did not have milk for the baby and she
spent most of her time alone at home lying in bed.

She is a beautiful girl and now very

happy and quickly gaining strength. Next came Glory, 17 days old. She is a twin hut the
mother could not nurse both and had no money for milk (the older sister at 1 yr, is like
Anallza, they said). She is beautiful and quiakly filling out.
Thank you so much to all of you who are partners with us and making it possible by your
prayer and financial support for us to give life both physical and spiritual to these child
ren. Anyone who would like to "adopt" a child write to us here and we will send you pic
tures and letters. (Send checks to the forwarding agents)."
SPOTS BEFORE OUR EYES! "Toward the end of January one of our older boys and our nurse came
down with Chicken Pox. At the time T left home (going to Manila first and then Ragulo) 3^
children had had the Chicken Pox. Case number 35 was supposed to meet me here in Baguio,

1985

Words of rejoicing come in the latest MESSAGES FROM MARY AND REFT.

Thev say, "We praise

the Lord for His love and care for us these months since the last newsletter and thank

all of you for your prayers, and that the Lord has given us the health and strength
needed. We also praise Him that all the children are healthv again and growing."

FAMILY NEWS: "The population has only grown by one since the last newsletter, Mav 15
we received a little boy, just 15 days old. He was abandoned hv the mother at 12 days,
in the house of an older woman who could not care for him. IHten he arrived, healthy and
handsome, he had no name. We put it up to a vote among the children and the. name Pavid
was chosen (and after a little discussion it was decided to go by the American pronunci
ation), He Is growing quickly, as are all our children."
"ALDRIN, a cerebral-palsied boy of 4 years, has returned to live at homo.

The parents

really miss him and decided to trv to care for and teach him. So at last count there
were 68 children, plus Jordan. How thankful we are for our wonderful staff and their
dedication to the Lord and to the children. They work long hours and their love for the
children is very evident. Please keep them in yo\ir pravers also,"

"The last of March our schools closed. Ariel graduated from high school with 7rd honors.
He will be going to Seminary and part time at the local college. Jessie graduated from
6th grade as salutatorian. He will he studving at one of our Christian high schools in
the province of Isabela.
(At the two Christian high schools started hv the Selhvs, there
are over 1,000 students receiving Bible classes every day and being taught bv Christian
teachers. Every year around 200 receive Christ and in turn reach out to their families,
friends, and neighbors.)"
"We also had Menchita and Zenalda each receiving 6th honors in their classes.
In otir
kindergarten Joy and Alfredo tied for 1st place, and Manucl got 5th place. Wc prav they

will all do as well, or better, as they again begin to study."

"Last week I

took our Manuel to Manila to be tested for learning disabilities, as he has

seemed to have some problems in kindergarten and Is about to begin 1st grade. Vc pralsc
the Lord that one of the teachers at Faith Academy took the time to test him. He does
have some problems and we are thankful to find out so be can be helped. Please nray that
his teacher will be understanding and willing to work with him so that he will not become
frustrated.

THE ANGELS REJOICE:

"This summer we had 12 kids in Junior Camp and 4 In Senior Camn.

What a joy that Jody and Rene accepted the T.ord as their Savior and were haptir:e.d during
Junior Camp. Please pray for them to really make Jesus the Lord of their lives and to
serve Him.

Also two VBS'S were held here in our area.

"We have been praying for a book-keeper, social worker, and person(s) to take our place

doing. It appears that these needs are being met. Please pray with us as we choose and

teach these the Lord is sending, " Our hearts fill with praise that again the Lord has
heard our prayers and is supplying our needs."

SCHOOL AGAIN:

"It is now time for school to begin again and thus time for uniforms.

Praise the Lord that out of 16 girls, only 2 shirts have to be made, and among all 30 in

elementary school and kindergarten there were enough white T-shirts to fit everyone. Even
though the children are growing, there is enough to go around. Thank you to all of you
who have given T-shirts or the money to purchase them.

Some of them will not be usable

next year and will have to be replaced, but we are thankful to the Lord that they are
sufficient for now. We have one in Seminary, 3 in high school, H boys and 9 girls in
elementary, and an evenly divided 10 in kindergarten. Please pray for our children as
they begin another school year, that they will stand strong in the love and faith and

Word of our Lord as they mix with the people and temptations of the world (such as being
encouraged to cheat). Our children are normal and feel the pull of Satan and his workers.
We ask your prayers for them to follow the ways of the Lord and be shining lights for Him
in all they say and do, and ask prayers for Bert and me and the rest of the staff as we
lead and teach these children in the Lord."

and VHS for the Home.

With that and

Modesto the gardener, and children with Papaya

some other monies designated for

harvest from trees Joy Collins planted.
Christmas gifts, and a little extra,
we purchased a TV and VHS player.
We can see this as a blessing as we can provide wholesome entertainment and learning
opportunities for the children (so much better than the movies the older children want to

view for relaxation and entertainment). If anyone has a VHS and could record spiritual,
educational, or other programs (sports, documentaries, etc.), we would be very thankful.

Already the children's horizons have been expanded as they leam more about the world
than they can know living in the province.

A special "thank you" to those who made it

possible.

"We thank the Lord that Jordan continues to grow and be healthy.

He is always amazing us,

as most of our children are way behind in development because of mal-nourishment, and
also he is advanced in many ways. 'Thank you' to you who are praying for him also."

"We pray the Lord's blessings on you as you pray and give to make this work possible.
all we say and do bring praise to the Lord.

Thank you all again so much for making it

possible for us to help these children and teach them of the Lord's love for them."
Mary and Bert love to hear from you. Their address is on the first page.

"On Sept. 24 Jocelyn (8 lbs.) and Jonalyn (6 lbs.), three-month twin girls arrived, small but

healthy. This was a problem of poverty and the mother could not nurse them enough. We are
thankful to get them now while they are still healthy instead of in a few weeks or months
when they would be severe malnourishment cases. They are pretty little girls (and we needed
them because all our little girls are 1 year old or older).

"On the 26th of Sept. Ian arrived, a happy, healthy 5-month old.

His mother just had

MAUREEN CAN SEE!!! Last Sept. 16 Maureen, age 12, deaf and almost totally blind, had her

first cataract surgery and is now fitted with glasses.

How thrilling to read "^That a joy it

was to watch Maureen when she put her glasses on for the first time. She just smiled and
smiled and went around looking at everything. She waved her hands, quite a distance from
her face and lower, and saw them. She looked at the chickens, the locks, her shadow

of the surgery was $620,00 (including fare and lodging in Manila). We praise the Lord that

the Redwood Church in Grants Pass, through Michele, paid $200.00 We know the Lord through
His people will provide the balance. How we thank the Lord for giving man the knowledge and
ability to perform such surgeries and for guiding the Dr. He said this was one of his most
successful cataract surgeries on a child.

SUGGESTION;

Since ic is apparent that Mary and Bert have several children who will have big

medical needs in order to function successfully, perhaps some would be interested in start

PRAISES AND OPPORTUNITIES;

"How we praise the Lord for supplying our needs!

With this great

increase in number our expenses have also greatly increased (it is amazing how fast 20
babies can go through a can of formula). There have been times we wondered what we would
eat the next day, but the Lord has always provided, as He has promised in His Word, We
were blessed by 6 big boxes of sandwich cookies, providing snacks for several weeks (which
we had no budget for.) We don't even know the person who sent them, A business ladv in

Aparri (non-Christian) gave a sack of rice (enough for 5 days), two chickens, and some pork.
We received monies from some of the students at Faith Academy in Manila (a result of the

Timothy Team) and in many other ways the Lord has provided.

We praise Him for each of you

and your part also in helping us give a home and love and the love of Christ to these
children."

"There are several things that we need that maybe some of you can help us with.

We always

need plastic pants and bibs. We could also use ciiildren's glass frames, since many of our
children need glasses. We could use more magazine pictures of animals, houses, families
(and extended families), flowers, the different food groups as well as any foods, doi-tors,
etc., waterfalls, volcanoes, different sports and exercise activiti.^s,

purchase more blankets (about $2.20 each) and dinnerware.

We have such exciting MESSAGES FROM MARY AND BERT to share with you!

Mary says "As I look

back on the last three nionths all I can do is praise the Lord and thank Him for supplying
our every need, and praise Him for you wonderful partners that trust Him and allow Hiin to

use you to help us. Without your prayers and financial help (and all the boxes of clothes,
plastic pants, bibs, etc.) we would never make it. We praise Him for giving us the health
and strength and the good staff we have, also."

THE FAMILY GROWS!

They say "We always seem to grow in leaps and bounds.

At last count we

had 82 children, plus Jordan. Three of those children are Negrito children we are helping
to go to school.

They are from one family and live in their own little house but eat with

us and we pay their schooling. This is an experiment in how we can help these special
people. If anyone would like to make a special gift to help cover their costs, we would
praise the Lord."

"Three more of the children are from Cebu and are here with their mother, who works here.
She was in desperate need and we were the ones who could help. The eldest, 12 years old,
and youngest, 9, are both mentally retarded, but teachable. They are in our kindergarten,

^e other, Aaron, 11, is in 5th grade and a great help in caring for.his brothers."

came at 1 1/2 months, an illegitimate baby. He is growing fast and handsome. Next
came another Gilbert, 11 days old. He is also illegitimate. He weighed about 4 1/2 lbs.,

but is gaining nicely. Gilbert has a hare lip and cleft oalate, but will be a very handsome
boy when the surgery is done. The mother was just going to throw him out, but then was In
formed of the Home so sent him here.

Praise the Lord that we were here to save that little

life."

"Four-year old Mike is another Cerebral Palsy case, fbut one that will be able to walk. He

has improved a lot already in the few weeks he has been here. It appears that he may be
very hard of hearing so we will have to have him testedand pray that he will he able to
hear. Mike's mother

(8 lbs.) and Jonalyn (6 lbs.), three-month twin girls arrived, small but
problem of poverty and the mother could not nurse them enough. We are
now while they are still healthy instead of in a few weeks or months

when they would be severe malnourishment cases.

They are pretty little girls (and we needed

them because all our little girls are 1 year old or older).

"On the 26th of Sept. Ian arrived, a happy, healthy 5-raonth old.

His mother just had

cataract surgery (34 years old) and the father (79 years old) could not care for him or
support all the children."
