FOUNTAIN HILLS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

IN TOUCH
Fountain Hills, AZ

May 2015

From Terri Schmidt, Elder

"Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a
gift: that is why they call it a present.
by Eleanor Roosevelt
How many of us greet the day as we would receive a gift,
with joy and welcoming. We need to greet each day with
great anticipation, for God has great plans for us. Each day
is a new challenge and a challenge that God will give us the
strength to get through. For those of us who believe in God,
we have lots to look forward to, but what about those people
who do not know Jesus as their savior? The Bible tells us to
go out and teach others of Jesus Christ and His Love. The
best way I can think of to do this is to help them in their time
of troubles. That is what we want to be able to say we are
doing here in the Mission Ministry. Here are some of the
projects we are involved in:

Extended Hands Food Bank

Thank you to Susan Owens, Susan Lickman, Linda Warren,
and Nancy Wulfmeier for helping with the Friday night Fish
Fry on Good Friday. It truly was a good Friday, as many
people came out to eat fish during the Lenten Season.
Thank you to all of you who so faithfully bring in nonperishable food for the food bank on Sunday mornings. It is
always greatly appreciated as well as greatly needed.

Changing Lives Center

Penny Junk and Terri Schmidt took the Easter Bags down to
the center. While we were there we took another tour of the
facility. It really is a remarkable place. I for one saw something that I did not notice when I was there previously.
There is so much detail and thought that has gone into this
facility. If anyone would like to take a tour of this facility, I
would be happy to take you down to see this remarkable
place.

While we were there we got samples of their cookies that

they make on site and sell. These are called Mission Cookies and they make these as a way to make some extra
money. It also helps some of these women learn a trade that
they can go out and make a living doing. These cookies are
still for sale. You can go on their website and purchase or
you can call them directly and order. If you want more information on the purchase of these cookies, you can call the
office or Terri Schmidt.

National day of Prayer

On Thursday May 7th you can join
others from our town at Fountain
Park for prayer. This day is set
aside for the Nation to gather and
join in prayer in unison on the same
day. If you have followed in this
newsletter each month, we have
prayed for specific parts of our life.
Our prayers have been for our local, state and national Government, Church, Business, Military, Media, Education and
Family. We are gathering at the amphitheater at 6:00pm.
Come and join us.
We have a few more things in the planning stages and will
let you know about them later. If any of the above projects
may be an area that you are interested in, please join us the
second Monday of each month. We meet in the Conference
Room at 4:00pm. As I close this month I want to ask you to
keep your eyes and heart open to those who are in need.
They may only need a kind word or a smile. They may need
words of encouragement or they may need physical or financial help, but whatever their needs be, please be open to
helping. This is some thing God asks us to do.

March actual income was ahead of actual expenses by

$8,478. First quarter actual results provide a nice cushion
of $19,000, but we still need to be mindful of the slow summer months coming up. As our winter residents leave for
the summer, and the rest of us die hard Arizonians remain
in the heat, please remember to keep up your pledges, as the
church expenses continue through the summer months. In
April we have incurred some major unexpected expenses
for repairs of a leaking backflow value (necessary for the
sprinklers in the fellowship hall), and the air conditioning may need some maintenance. Please pray that the air conditioner and other major systems remain in good
working order. Online banking is a good way to keep monthly pledges coming in on
a regular basis, rather than making up a lump sum at one time. Have a cool, safe
summer, and we will see you in the fall.
Respectfully,
Linda Lull, Treasurer

Letter from Session to Presbytery

UPDATE ON COMMUNITY STRAW POLL
The Session reviewed the straw poll and all the comments and agreed to the following action plan:

Write a letter to the Presbytery expressing our concerns.

Continue conversations with other churches
Attend the Fellowship meeting in March
Work and pray for the Gracious Dismissal Policy, to be presented in November 2015

The primary goal through this process was to have open and honest communication and keep this family together.
The poll was two thirds in favor of continuing the conversation with the Presbytery and the comments were equally
as supportive. However, the total ballots cast were only half of the congregation. In most circumstances that would
have been a passing total. This was a straw poll, not a vote. We have not planned and future meetings at this time
but always welcome your thoughts and prayers.
The letter to the Presbytery follows.
John Brockelman

April 16, 2015

To: Brad Munroe, Presbytery Pastor
Presbytery of the Grand Canyon
We, the Session and Members of Fountain Hills Presbyterian
Church, write to you out of deepening concern for our Presbyterian denomination and profound respect for the history
from which it springs.
As you are aware, our congregation has been involved in a
period of discernment regarding our relationship with PC
(USA) and Gods will for this family. Our session has invested considerable time and effort to provide information,
talk to our family here and give everyone a chance to speak
out.
The result of these conversations is first, a deep dismay with
the actions taken by the PC(USA) at the 221st General Assembly meeting in June in Detroit, Michigan.
We share with you here our abiding concern about the future
of the PC(USA) and our ability to be a supportive part of a
denomination that will use an Authorative Interpretation to
institute a major and controversial change which has the effect of contravening the explicit language contained in our
Book of Order.
In our own Presbytery, the Gracious Dismissal Policy is an
example of a document collaborated upon by the sessions of
ten churches which, was referred to committee for study until
November. We understand it has some constitutional issues;
but, the frustration that it was not given at least preliminary
consideration due it by the full body of the Presbytery remains quite frustrating, especially since such policy was long
ago mandated by the GA.
If the PC(USA) is making changes to either policy or polity
in the interests of maintaining relevance in a changing soci-

ety, we suggest they reconsider the Trust Clause, especially as it relates to churches that are not, nor have not,
received monetary support from the Presbytery or the PC
(USA).
Secondly, we must also tell you that our overall concerns
have advanced well beyond the issues attendant to the
221st General Assembly. We are despairing of the overall
theological direction and political agenda of our Presbytery and denomination. We stand firm and encourage the
Presbytery of Grand Canyon to redirect its efforts toward
implementing change which returns our body to a truly
Christ-centered and Scripturally-based focus.
Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church affirms the beliefs
reflected and expounded in our Book of Confessions.
Our Presbytery and the PC(USA) are losing members and
congregations because we continue to accept less commitment to this critical historic cornerstone of the denomination.
We are carefully and prayerfully considering our ongoing
relationship with the PC(USA). As both the viability and
direction of our denomination fall into increasing question, so does our commitment.
As we continue to reflect on the impact of all these issues
on our church, this congregation will operate in a way
that honors God and his voice in scripture as he speaks to
the leadership of this church, His Church.

Respectfully Submitted,

John Brockelman, Elder

Clerk of Session

National Day of Prayer

Lord Hear Our Cry!
I King 8:28 Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is
praying in your presence this Day.
May 7, 2015 is National Day of Prayer this year.
Our National Day of Prayer changes each year because it is
designated the first Thursday of May. As we are getting
ready to celebrate it again in a few days, I felt I would give
you some history on National Day of Prayer.
This all started way back in the beginning of our
nation. In 1775 Continental Congress gathered together and
designated a day and time to pray. They prayed as they were
forming a new Nation, a nation that was based on Freedom of
Religion. This was continued by President George Washington as he declared February 19th as a day of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer. It has continued as Presidents James
Madison in 1813 had a Public day of Prayer and President
Abraham Lincoln had a day of fasting and Prayer in 1863
while they were fighting the Civil War.
Over the years it has been a subject of controversy,
while Presidents and Congressmen debated on the age long
fight of separation of Government and Religion. But on April
17, 1952 a bill was initiated by Conrad Hilton (of the Hilton
Hotel chain) and Senator Frank Carlson of Kansas. This bill
passed with no special date, the only stipulation was it was
not to be on Sunday. Thus at this time a Task Force was
formed, which is still in place today. In 1983 the first National Day Of Prayer was held at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C., with featured speakers being the Vice President
George Bush and Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie. Then in 1988 President
Ronald Reagan signed into law the first Thursday in May as
National Day Of Prayer. This is the day we still recognize
today.
One voice united in prayer is the ultimate goal of
this group of people. We gather all over our country on this
day to pray in unison for our Federal, State, and Local Governments, Military, Media, Business, Education, Church and
Family. The Bible tells us where two or more are gathered

in his name, he will hear our prayers.

The Bible encourages us to prayer for our leaders and families. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 says I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made
on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life....
We all are aware of the need for prayer that we
as a country, are so desperately in need of. We need
God's wisdom and help in the running of our governments and the raising of our families.
2 Chronicles 7:14 says If my people, who are
called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and
seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will
hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their
land.
So join me and others from numerous local
Churches, on May 7th at Fountain Park. We will be gathering at the amphitheater, services will begin at 6:00pm.
If you come around 5:30 there will be food and drinks
available.
Let me end this with a quote from Ronald
Reagan If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under
God, then we will be a Nation gone under.

One Body, One Spirit

The 2015 Church wide Gathering of Presbyterian Women will be held in
Minneapolis June 18-21, where the focus will be on 1 Corinthians: 12-27
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members
of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the
one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or
free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. There will be a vast
array of opportunities to make and renew friendships and celebrate the
one Spirit that lives and works through all of us.

So, chosen by God for this new life of love,

dress in the wardrobe God picked out for
you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet
strength, discipline. Be even-tempered,
content with second place, quick to forgive
any offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And
regardless of what else you put on, wear
love. Its your basic, all-purpose garment.
Never be without it. Colossians 3:12-14,

Madison Reynolds (middle), granddaughter of Jack and
Monique Reynolds, celebrated her baptism and birthday Palm
Sunday with two new preschool friends, Anabelle Good and
Mia Junk. We are so blessed to have opportunities on the
holidays and summer to share the love of Jesus with visiting
grandchildren!
Madison, her parents and grandmother attended a class about
salvation and baptism with Debby DeBernardi. It was a fun,
interactive time with lots of skits and visuals.
The why and how God kept His covenant promise through
Jesus comes alive making her baptism a meaningful experience for all.
She was so excited to tell others about Jesus, that she
shared with other children the following week! Keep her
in prayer!

from a generous donation and from the Life with God Elementary KidCommunity. The children attending Sunday morning decided to make bracelets, book markers, necklaces
to sell to raise money for the man needing a new kidney. They were learning about serving with the Lords love. It took
awhile before they realized they could not buy him a new kidney. But their compassion was Gods compassion. We
prayed we would work and serve with the Lords love!
Compassion multiplied in the Lords Love. A couple donated money to Jeff through our church. A
woman had compassion and is now a potential donor. Jeff is grateful and with compassion is setting
up a fund for the donor since she will be taking off work to donate her kidney. Serving others in the
Lords love and compassion multiplies our offerings!
Thank you Sunday Elementary kids for all your efforts and prayers!

Thank You
Upon moving to FH in December, I knew that our small
condo would not have space for the office. I started looking for a room to rent, which was not in our budget. Upon
joining FHPC in December, I was discussing my project
with Pastor Bill and he showed me the space that could be
made available for an office. It has worked out wonderfully. Thank you.
TO: The Congregation of FHPC

It is with sincere appreciation to Pastor Bill, the Session and
the staff of FHPC for allowing me to use the area behind the
Youth Room as an office
for Free The Kids, Inc. an orphanage community project in
Haiti. My brother-in-law, Fr. Marc, a Catholic priest, and I
started Free The Kids in 1999 and I have always maintained
an office in my home to operate the business aspect of
charity. Fr. Marc runs the project in Haiti.

general or about the suffering of Haitian children specifically.

Breaking News. . .
Reading Literature Makes Us Smarter and Nicer
Studies by psychologists show that individuals who often
read fiction appear to be better able to understand other
people, empathize with them and view the world from their
perspective. Deep reading, as opposed to the often superficial reading we do on the Web, is an endangered practice, one we ought to taker steps to preserve as we would a
historic building or a significant work of art.
So what does your Church Library have to offer? The best
way to find a book that could be enlightening as well as
(make you smarter,: is to BROWSE our collection.
Would you dare to start by looking at the many versions
of the Bible? From the King James Version to The Message, ten or more are available.
Do you need a deeper understanding of a particular Bible passage? Many Bible Dictionaries and Study Bibles are
ready for use.
Want to know more about a special Biblical person?

with Dewey (Decimal System) #222 through 226 and then
move on to the next shelves. If you havent read it, I suggest Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths by
Bruce Feiler.
If you treasure the Psalms, we have recently acquired
The Psalms, by W. Graham Scroggie, which explains the
Who, What, Where, When and Why of all the Psalms. If
Psalm 23 is a favorite, please read A Shepherd Looks at
Psalm 23, by W. Phillip Keller.
Do you wonder what books we have by notable Christian authors? Browse or use the card catalog (remember

those?) for such names as C.S. Lewis, Philip Yancy, Max

Lucado, Charles Swindoll, Billy Graham and others.
Biographies, true personal stories, and fiction? Our
shelves are bulging with these books; some are quite new
some are oldies but goodies. PW reading list books
from years past as well as those on the 2015-16 booklist
are available, or will be very soon.
Childrens books and Parenting Books? Our Library
has been blessed with donations of childrens books. By
the time you are reading this there will be another ten
ready to check out. Debby DeBernardi has given us some
parenting book titles to help fill that need.
Do you like a book series? A series of five books by
Roxanne Henke will lead you from one to the next without any desire to stop. The titles are: After Anne, Finding
Ruth, Being Olivia, Always Jan, and With Love Libby.
The stories take place in Brewster, ND, the typical Middle America, USA, where everybody knows your namepeople with hopes and dreams, people in love and people
with broken hearts, friends and foes, families and Faith
not very different from where many of us have lived.
These are compelling stories about the power of friendship and honor the memory of all
friendships that leave a permanent
mark upon your heart. All of these stories show the surprising way God
works to turn our well-planned lives
into something so much better than we
ever imagined for ourselves.
Heres to Smarter and Nicer . . .
See you at the Library!

Vivian Virden

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that
it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. 'I've gone for 30 years now,'
he wrote, 'and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for
the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting
my time and the priests are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.'
This started a real controversy in the 'Letters to the Editor' column.
Much to the delight of the editor, it went on for weeks until someone wrote
this clincher:
'I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some
32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a
single one of those meals. But I do know this... they all nourished me and
gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me
these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to
church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!'When you are
DOWN to nothing....God is UP to something!
Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!
Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

Well, Dorothy Parris and her buddy Suzanne Gillham
have made it through every file draw of music in our music library. They have counted, erased, taped, and organized to the highest efficiency that the music library has
been to date. The effort has taken 3 years, and I could not
be more thankful that Dorothy took that time, with all her
organizational skills and managed it so well. Every anthem that has ever been purchased has been re-integrated
and given a place in the card file. It's just beautiful! Thank you, Mrs. Parris!
The Celebration Singers will be Singing through May

Member Spotlight . Did you know?

Melba Versaw
Melba was born in Republic County, Kansas. She grew
up there with her sister and
parents, Lona and Elmer
Mosier. This was the time of
the Great Depression and
Kansas had some rather severe
dust storms. These things are
part of her childhood memories.
Melba received her elementary education in a rural school. After graduating from
high school, she attended nursing school at Lincoln General Hospital for two years. This class and several others
were part of the Cadet Nurse program sponsored by the U.
S. Government as part of the war effort.
She and Dean were married in October of 1947 in her
home Church. Dean was called to active duty during the
Korean War. Their duty station was Banger, ME which
they enjoyed while living there. Their oldest son was born
before Dean was discharged in 1952.
After a short time, they bought and ran a Dry Cleaning
business. A change in career choices found Dean returning
to the University of Nebraska to earn a degree in Industrial
Engineering. During this time Melba worked for the Dept.
of Agriculture with time out for the birth of their second
son.
After Deans graduation they moved to Denver, CO
where Dean was employed as an Industrial Engineer. In
1970 they moved to Loveland, CO where Dean owned and
operated a manufacturing business in Berthoud. While
living in Loveland they hosted five Rotary exchange students.
After Dean sold the manufacturing business in 1980, he
devoted his time and talents to British cars, owning, col-

lecting and renovating them. He was a member of a British Car Club and they attended a number of annual Car
Club weekends in England and several other countries. In
1979 they moved to Fountain Hills. The car interest carried on and they attended British car events.
In 1993 they purchased a home in Brittany, France
and spent six months of each year, for seven years, living
there. They lived in a small village among many English
speaking people and became acquainted with some very
nice people. Americans were well liked there. This village
was near the beaches of World War II and on the 50th anniversary of D-Day they attended that celebration. The
French went all out with this celebration and President
Clinton and several other dignitaries were there. They
sold their French home in 2000 and spent the next seven
summers in Maine. Their last Maine address was in
Damariscotta.
Over the years she and Dean held church offices in the
Congregational Church where they were members prior to
joining Fountain Hills Presbyterian church where Melba
now enjoys Sunday worship, Bible study, fellowship and
friendship.

Hospitalized? Call the church!

With deepest sympathy we list

those members who have passed
away in 2015.
Billy Neal
Sylvester Taylor
Marjorie Koepke
Dallas Shuck

If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from illness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a congregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended
summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to
assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simply
vacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick and
we are not aware of it.
You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your
situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to
the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by communicating your situation.
