Expertise in tank farms

Foundation and Remediation

of all kinds of tank farms
We have a worldwide competence for foundation techniques in the field of new
construction and in remediation of existing
tanks.
The Keller Group has supported tanks on improved ground and
repaired foundation of tanks built on unsuitable ground conditions for decades.
Foundation
Whether the challenge at a site is soft clay resulting in unacceptable settlement, clay or mixed soils with insufficient bearing
capacity, liquefiable soils requiring improvement, or , we provide on-time design-build foundation solutions with long-term
performance of any demanding tank project.

Special conditions
The limiting conditions of tank
construction like safety regulations, logistical challenges and an ongoing production require individual foundation
and remediation solutions and an expert knowledge for the design and execution of construction works.

Highly sensitive technology of tanks,

strict Health & Safety regulations and
limited space conditions require an
excellent H&S-standard and besttrained staff.

We provide a complete range of geotechnical construction design-build services for planned or existing tanks.
If the exisiting ground conditions at your tank site require more
than a grade-supported tank, we have options to efficiently
match the geotechnical construction technology with the soils
to provide a long term foundation performance.
Remediation
Settlement and misalignment of existing tanks can be remediated economically with specialty grouting techniques that offer
limited access constructability, pinpoint treatment, void filling
and floor lifting, and re-leveling.
Our experienced crews can mobilize fast and work quickly and
safely, helping minimize the owners economic and technical
losses.
To design and execute a safe, effective and sustainable remediationan an exact monitoring during the whole process is absolutely essential. We can provide you with a complete monitoring
solution which includes control, execution, development and
evaluation.
We are committed to providing the most economical solution
that produces the needed long-term support of your tank.

Safe foundation of tanks - our services at a glance

We can offer a complete range of foundation techniques combined with a global service and excellent support
for the most economic and sustainable foundation solution.
The most imporant techniques for the foundation of tanks:
2. Deep-Soil-Mixing
Typically used in soft soils, the soil mixing technique
relies on the introduction of an engineered grout
material to either create a soil-cement matrix for
soil stabilization, or to form subsurface structural
elements to support earth or building loads. Soil
mixing can be accomplished by many methods, with
a wide range of mixing tools and tool configurations
available.
3. Vibro Concrete Columns
Very weak, cohesive and organic soils that are not
suitable for standard Vibro techniques can be improved by the installation of Vibro Concrete Columns. Beneath large area loads, Vibro Concrete
Columns reduce settlement, increase bearing capacity, and increase slope stability.
4. Soilcrete Process
In contrast with the conventional ground stabilisation methods Soilcrete may be used for stabilization
and sealing of all kind of soil ranging from loose sediments to clay. This applies also for non homogeneous soil formations and changing soil layers,
including organic material. Soft rock formations have also been treated by Keller for example sandstone with weak grain texture.
5. Compaction Grouting
When low-slump compaction grout is injected into
granular soils, grout bulbs are formed that displace
and densify the surrounding loose soils. The technique is ideal for side improvement of loose soil strata and remediating or preventing structural settlements.

1. Deep Vibro Techniques

Deep vibro techniques are mainly used under
foundations of structures that are to be construc6. Piling

Piling involves the installation of structural elements
Compaction technique compacts granular soils with

negligible fines content by rearrangement of the soil

particles into a denser state. The Vibro Replaceof piling systems. They may be preformed and driment technique builds load bearing columns made

from gravel or crushed stones in cohesive soils and
granular soils with high fines content.

Foundation and remediation of tanks

Remeditation of exisiting tanks

With the Soilfrac Process fractures are created in the soil which are filled with hardening grout. Every soil formation can be improved by multiple rounds of grouting and controlled lifting can be induced.
1. Sleeve pipe installation
Sleeve pipes are installed in the soil formation
to be treated and the annular space between
the borehole and the sleeve pipe is sealed with
a stiff cement-bentonite mixture.
2. Soil fracturing
For the injection of the Soilfrac-material a
grout hose with a double packer at its tip is inserted into the sleeve pipe. The double packer
closes the sleeve pipe on either side of the sleeve, thus allowing the grouting of individual sleeves in the area to be treated.
3. Multiple grouting
The sleeves along the grout pipe may be used
only once or several times according to the
technical requirements. The grout quantity, the
max. grout pressure and in case of repeated
grouting the setting time are strictly met according to the given specifications. Sleeve pipes
can be kept operational for a long period.
Oil Tanks, Trieste (Italy)
Two crude oil tanks (diameter 40m and 80m) with differential settlements. The larger tank had a local depression
in the bottom plate and a settlement along the shell.
With Soilfrac Process the differential settlements were
stopped and the tanks were remediated.

Oil Tank, Kloubouky (Czech Republic)

New constructed oil tank (diameter 38m, height 16m,
capacity 12.000 m) with differential settlements when
60% of the volume was filled with water.
With Soilfrac Process Keller

stopped the differential settlements

remediated the oil tank

limited the future settlements under full load to

max. 20 mm.
