American Translators Associa$on - ATA

ATA cer8ca8on exam.


Before taking the exam candidate must become ATA member.
To qualify for examina8on members must provide proof of a
combina8on of educa8on and work experience.
Approved transla8on and interpre8ng schools, listed by country.
Must fulll a "con8nuing educa8on" requirement every year.

Who grants professional cer$ca$on for T/Is?


The Chartered Ins$tute of Linguists - IoL

Diploma in Transla8on (DipTrans) course as a postgraduate level


qualica8on.
Translators having high level of linguis'c competence in SL and TL .
Well-rounded cultural knowledge along with linguis8c skills.
Good knowledge of subject area, achieved through extensive research.
Pass an exam qualifying for membership.

Who grants professional cer$ca$on for T/Is?


Associa$on Interna$onale des Interprtes de Confrence - AIIC

AIIC membership, not a cer8ca8on.


At least 150 days of work overall according to AIIC's regula8ons.
Sponsorship of 3 ac8ve AIIC members, including 2 from your region,
who have listened to you work at a mee1ng no more than three years
prior to the date at which they signed your applica8on, and
who have signed your applica8on form no more than three years prior to
the date at which the AIIC Secretariat receives your applica8on, and
who have 5 years seniority in the languages they are sponsoring, and
who cover at least one language pair.

Trade associa8on.
Emphasis in training and business opportuni8es for members.
Membership requirements as of 03/2012:
College degree and three years of full-8me experience, or six years as part-
8me T/I in the past 6 years, or
High school diploma and seven years of full-8me experience as a T/I in the
past 10 years, or
Cer8ca8on of an organiza8on recognized by ATIEC and three years of full-
8me experience, or six years of part-8me experience as a T/I.

- CTIPE

Professional associa8on.
Emphasis in academic qualica8on.
Membership requirements as of 04/2012:
3 recommenda8ons from persons knowledgeable of your T/I
competences.
College degree in T/I, or work cer8ca8on in the eld.

You dont need to go to school to be a professional T/I.


T/Is are not required to be cer8ed.
Clients do not care about your academic background.
The market will not know if you are a good or bad T/I.
Cer8ca8on is a majer of personal choice.
