CHAPTER 9
THE PAST SENTENCES

Past sentences are belong to four forms, there are:


1. Simple past tense
2. Past continuous tense
3. Past perfect tense
4. Past perfect continuous tense

A. Simple Past Tense


1. Definition
Simple past tense is verbal form its used to tell activity or situation
that began and ended at a particular time in the past event.
2. Function
a. To express the actions that began and ended in past event
b. To express the habitual in past event
3. Time signal
Yesterday
This morning /afternoon
. Ago ( two days ago)
Last. (last week)
Just now
In 1993
Every day last month

4. Sentences form
a. Nominal Form
1. Positive Sentence
S + BE (Was/Were) + Adj/Noun
Was use to: I, He, She, It
Were uses to: You, We, They
Example:

She was beautiful this morning


They were happy yesterday
2. Negative Sentence
S + BE (Was/Were) + not
Example:

He was not care with me


They were not busy last week
3. Interrogative sentence

Yes/No Question
Was/Were + S + Adj/noun?
Example:

Was she angry with me yesterday?


Were we noisy in the class last Monday?

W/H Question
W/H + Was/Were + S + V-ing + noun?
Example:

Where were you sitting at this time yesterday?


What was happening in this room a hours ago?

b. Verbal Form
1. Positive sentence
S + VII + O
Example:

I presented my paper last Monday


They bought the education books yesterday
2. Negative sentence
S + Did Not + VI + O
Example:

They didnt bring my flash disk this morning


I didnt go to Campus last Friday
3. Interrogative sentence
a. Yes/No Question
Did + S + VI + O ?
Example:

Did you bring my flash disk?


Did he move the table beside the chair?
b. W/H Question
Asking subject
W/H + VII + O/noun?
Example:

What caused the flood in Jakarta?


How much people came to your birth day party?
Asking other than subject
W/H + Did + S + VI + O/noun?
Example:

How did you bring this box?

When did Mrs. Pramuning come?

B. Past Continuous Tense


1. Definition
Past continuous tense is sentence that use to express both actions
occurred at same time, but one action began earlier and was in
progress when the other action occurred.
2. Function
1. To express an actions that happening in past event.
Example:

They were playing football all afternoon last Sunday.


2. To express an activity that occurred at same time in past event
when another activity occurred.
Usually use clause with,When/ While/As.
Example:

When I was walking to school, I met Anna.


As she was having breakfast the phone rang.
3. Time Signal

The whole day last year

4. Sentence Form
a. Positive sentence
S + Was/Were + VING + O

Example:

They were going to Italy .


b. Negative sentence
S + Was/Were + Not + VING , Clause
Example:

She was not going to Campus, when she was sick.


c. Interrogative sentence
1. Yes/No Question
Was/Were + S + VING , Clause ?
Example:

Was she opening the door , when they came?


Were you painting this wall , when they met him?
2. W/H Question
W/H + Be + S + VING , Clause?
Example:

What were you doing at 10 oclock last night?


What was happening at this room , when you walked in today?

C. PAST PERFECT TENSE


1. Definition
The past perfect tense is tenses its use to expresses an activity that
completed before another activity in past.

2. Function
1. To express an activity or actions where happened before another
activity become in past.
Example:

They went home , after they had finished doing the work.
The sun had set down , before I was ready to go.
2. To express an activity or actions happened until another activity
happened in past event.
Example:

The family had waited for an hour , when the doctor arrived.
3. To express an activity or actions where happened frequently
before another activity happened in past event.
Example:

His mother had given him medicine for three days, before she
took him to the hospital.
3. Time Signal
When .. ,(past tense)
After .. ,(past tense / past perfect)
Before .. ,(past tense / past perfect)
Until .. ,(past tense / past perfect)
As soon as .. ,(past tense / past perfect)
4. Sentence Form
a. Nominal
1. Positive
S + Had been + Noun , Clause
Example:

She had been at school , before the lecturer came in.


2. Negative
S + Had not been + Noun, Clause
Example:

She had not been there , after they went home.


b. Verbal

1. Positive
S + Had + VIII , Clause
Example:

I had left , before you arrived.


2. Negative
S + Had not + VII , Clause
Example:

You had not paid your debt , before I gave you money.
3. Interrogative
Had + S + VII , Clause?
Example:

Had you swept the floor , when I arrived?


Had you sat there , before the manager came in?

D. Past Perfect Continuous Tense


1. Definition
Past perfect continuous tense emphasize the duration of an activity
that was in progress before another activity or time in the past.
2. Function
To express an activity in progress recent to another time or activity
in the past.
3. Time Signal
When .

4. Sentence form
a. Positive
S + Had been + VING

Example:

When I came from Kalimantan in 1997, she had been living there
about seven years.
John had been working there for five years, when the world-war II
ended.
b. Negative
S + Had not been +VING
Example:

He had not been sleeping , until I came to meet him.


She had not been abusing , before I went.
c. Interrogative
Had + S + Been + VING?
Example:

Had she been finishing her duty, before her leader inspected?
Had we been sweeping the room, when our teacher came?
