REFLECTION ON MY EXPERIENCE IN LEARNING TEACHING READING SKILLS AND


VOCABULARY IN THE PRIMARY ESL CLASSROOM
Learning about Reading in Semester 3 guided me on how to conduct a good
reading lesson in my everyday English class. Teaching reading is crucial for every
English teacher. Learning how to teach children reading is important as reading is
the fundamental for all knowledge.
Miss Yeoh Phaik Kin, my reading lecturer uses her own notes and power point
slides to explain each topic. Her explanation is clear and I am able to understand.
The problem I face until now is I could not access the module uploaded in
the internet. I rely on the lectures notes and other reference books.
Our assignment tasks are preparing graphic organizers, writing a lesson plan
and conduct a teaching lesson in my own school. Writing a lengthy lesson plan,
preparation, teaching aids and recording the teaching needs a lot of hard work.
Some problems I face doing this period are selecting an appropriate story
book according to my pupils levels and the flow of the lesson. Somehow or rather
the lesson that you plan may not turn out well during practice as certain
weaknesses can only be seen during the teaching process.
I did some adjustments to the lesson plan. This experience taught me how I
should plan a reading lesson well. I should take into consideration of certain
weaknesses to further improve the lesson plan. One example of weakness is during

the practice stage, the matching words to pictures. During this stage, the teacher
should have prepared the pictures and sentence patterns.
Throughout the process, I learned that preparing and actually conducting
the lesson plan can differ greatly. The teacher should be wise enough to make the
necessary changes spontaneously to cater according to the pupils levels and at the
same time adjust the lesson appropriately.
