BYD aims to sell electric cars in developed markets

Henry Li, general manager of BYD
Autos export division, says BYD has
4,000 engineers working on hybrids,
electric and other vehicles. He spoke
to Automotive News China Reporter
Kevin Huang at the companys headquarters in Shenzhen. BYD Auto is a
business unit of Hong Kong-listed
BYD Co.
What products is BYD Auto exporting?
We sell gasoline cars to more than 20
countries at present, mainly to Rus-

sia and countries in

Africa, the Middle East
and South America. We
exported about 7,000
cars last year, mainly the
F3 compact sedan. We
expect this years export
volume to increase by 50
percent to 70 percent
year-on-year.
Whats BYD Autos overall strategy for
oversea markets?

We may choose some countries

such as Denmark and Portugal
for pilot sales programs.
Henry Li

We plan to sell conventional gasoline

cars to developing countries and
new energy [plug-in hybrids and full
electric] cars to the developed mar-

kets such as the US and

Europe. We hope overseas sales could make
up more than 50 percent of our annual
sales, but we may need
10 years to realize this
target.

Whats your plan for Europe?

Like our schedule for the US, we plan
to launch sales in Europe in 2010 or
2011. We may choose some countries

such as Denmark and Portugal for

pilot sales programs. We have signed
a contract with the Hipogest Group
in Portugal to distribute our cars. By
the way, we may launch sales in Israel in 2009.
How is BYD Autos r&d ability?
We have about 4,000 automobile engineers, and the engineers from some
other r&d departments of our parent
company will also participate in the
ANE
development of new cars.
