Ty & Mocha
Ty and Mocha are brother and sister 6.5-year-old border collie/boxer
crosses. They came to us after a new baby in the family meant they
werent able to get the attention and exercise they need. Ty and Mocha
are well trained, responsive to a number of commands and great
walking on leash. They are both very friendly with new people, children,
cats and dogs, though Mocha has been known to show dominant
behaviours with some dogs. Ty loves to run and play frisbee, but he
also thinks he is a lapdog and loves getting cuddles. He seems to have
some mild seasonal allergies, resulting in redness of the eyes, which
is responsive to medication. Mocha loves to run and play, but she is
a clever dog who likes to show her expertise in escaping and jumping
fences - then waiting on the other side until you nd her there! Ty
likes to follow his sister around so will escape and jump fences when
Mocha does so rst, but is generally happy and calm in the house and
yard. Mocha and Ty have been together since birth so we are hoping to
adopt them out together. If you are interested in this playful pair, please

Children Art At Oxygen Art Centre

Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present the work of
grade three and four elementary students working through
the Artist In the Classroom program. Students from two
local elementary schools have been working with local
artist, Jennifer McAuley to create a series of one of a kind,
handmade, art cards to trade, exhibit and collect. Each

in a workshop session series that introduces young artists
to unique forms of visual expression. Each student has created a
series of art cards that they can

A volunteer firefighter from the Tarrys fire department

has received the 2015 Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer
Award for Road Rescue from the Province of BC.
Dave Laramee has been a firefighter with the department since 2003 and its training officer since 2009.
Laramee delivers training in firefighting, first response,
wildland firefighting, and extrication.
Im thrilled to receive this honour, but there are more
volunteers than just me, says Laramee.
Laramee was presented the award by Emergency Management BC at a ceremony in Victoria. The event was held
as part of National Volunteer Week. Volunteering has
always been a part of my life, says Laramee.
Dave continuously provides this valuable training to
all members and has devoted many hours of his personal
time to preparing this training, says Greg Patterson, chief
of the Tarrys volunteer fire department. He is a definite
asset to the department and our community.

Author Celebrates The Canoe

The craft that transported Canadas earliest peoples
and later carried European explorers is beloved today as
a means to experience the great outdoors. Canoe expert
Sanford Osler celebrates this iconic vessel in his book
Canoe Crossings: Understanding the Craft that Helped
Shape British Columbia. Osler offers a colourful look at
the cultural history of the canoe in a free talk and slideshow at the Nelson Library on Thursday, May 7 at 7 pm.
Released in 2014 by Heritage House, Canoe Crossings
contains a foreword by Shelagh Rogers and more than 50
colour photographs. Osler traces the influence of various types of canoe (including kayaks and dragon boats)
through its uses in exploration, hunting and fishing, racing, war, and even healing. He explores the work of innovators and designers, and celebrates the beauty of the craft
and the waterways it travels.
Canada is a nation of rivers and therefore a nation
of canoes, or so the saying goes, says Dr. James Raffan,
author and Director of Development at the Canadian
Canoe Museum. But Sanford Osler reminds us that Canada is also a coastal nation and that canoe culture is as
rich, or richer, in British Columbia, particularly with the
resurgence of tribal journeys, as it is anywhere else in the
country.
Nelson has a long history with the canoe, from our First
Nations people to our growing legion of recreational paddling enthusiasts. Nelsons own canoe maker, Hellman
Canoe and Kayak, has a spot in Oslers book. Anyone who
has ever dipped a paddle or thought about it will enjoy
this presentation, which is sponsored by the Kootenay
Library Federation and the Nelson Public Library.

The Greater Trail Hospice Society is holding two information events in May in an ongoing commitment to provide education about end of life issues.
The first informative evening is called No-one Wants to
Talk About It, which will provide answers to the questions
that no-one wants to ask. End of life issues have become
more complicated as governments make changes to existing laws, and advances in medicine increase the choices
you may have to make for yourself or a loved one.
Speakers will cover legal, financial, advanced care planning, pain control, and funerary concerns as they pertain to
end of life issues. Why do I need to appoint a Power of Attorney when everything is owned jointly with my partner? How
can I shelter my estate and make sure it remains intact? What
is an Advanced Care Plan and why do I need one? Who will
make decisions about my health care if I am incapable of
doing so? What information do I need for the funeral home
as a loved one nears the end of life? The Greater Trail Hospice
Society wants everyone to have the answers to difficult questions before they need them in a time of crisis.
The event will take place on Tuesday, May 5 at the Royal
Canadian Legion, 2141 Columbia Avenue in Trail. Doors
open at 6:30 pm with speakers starting at 7 pm.
The second session is very timely as it deals with a topic
that affects many people. The DVD presentation The Longest Loss: Alzheimers Disease and Dementia, is the latest
in the highly regarded Living with Grief series produced
by the Hospice Foundation of America. The DVD has
personal stories and a panel of experts who specialize in
this field discussing this very pertinent topic. This panel
of experts will identify how medical and social services
professionals can improve care for patients, families and
themselves while coping with loss and grief associated
with these progressive illnesses. Part One of the DVD is
Coping with Loss at the Onset of Disease and Part Two is
Living with Grief and Dementia at Lifes End.
There will be two showings of the DVD followed by discussion on May 11. The first session will be at 1 pm and
the second viewing will be at 6 pm in room 228 at KIRO
Wellness Centre, 1500 Columbia Avenue, Trail.
Light refreshments will be offered and entrance is by a
suggested donation of $10 and $5 for seniors. For more

Barbecue To Celebrate
International Workers Day
On Friday May 1, workers, unions and labour organizations around the world will celebrate International
Workers Day, commonly known as May Day. The West
Kootenay Labour Council will join that global celebration
by hosting a free lunchtime barbecue and we invite everyone to join us, says Debbie Bird, 2nd Vice President of
the West Kootenay Labour Council (WKLC).
The barbecue will take place between 11 am and 2 pm
on Friday May 1 in front of Castlegar City Hall, and we
hope people of all ages will come out for a bite, some live
music and to peruse information on important issues,
Ms Bird stated.
The Labour Council represents unionized workers in
Nelson, Castlegar, Trail and surrounding areas, added
Armindo deMedieros, President of United Steel Workers
Local 480 in Trail and 3rd Vice President of the Labour
Council. We have decided to make this an annual
event but rotate it each year between the three major

Oxygen Art Centre Presents

Poet Kevin Spenst
Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present the latest
work by Vancouver based poet Kevin Spenst, who has
embarked on a 50 reading tour of BC in support of small
poetry presses. Jabbering with Bing Bong (Anvil Press
2015,) is Spensts much-anticipated debut collection of
poetry. The work opens as a coming-of-age narrative
of lower-middle class life in Vancouvers suburb of Surrey, embroidered within a myriad of pop culture and
post-Mennonite.
Slocan based poet Barbara Curry Mulcahy will join
Kevin Spenst for the Oxygens reading on Sunday, May 3
at 7 pm. Curry Mulcahys book of poetry The Man with
the Dancing Monkey was short listed for the Pat Lowther
Memorial Award and the Gerald Lampert Memorial
Award, and she writes for the Valley Voice. Admission is
by donation and everyone is welcome. Oxygen Art Centre
is located at 320 Vernon St (back alley entrance) in Nelson.

May Day celebrates improvements in wages, benefits
and working conditions through workers collective
struggle. On May 1, 1886, 40,000 workers went out on
strike in Chicago to have their 10 and 12 hour working
days reduced to eight hours. That strike is remembered
because of the violence that occurred due to police brutality against strikers, culminating in disaster when a bomb
was thrown by an unknown person at police. A monument in Hay Market Square stands today to remember the
ultimate sacrifice Albert Parsons, August Spies, George
Engel and Adolph Fischer made for workers to achieve
the eight hour standard. One hundred twenty nine years
later, we honour those who continue to make sacrifices so
all may have opportunities for a better life.
