INTRODUCTION:

On 30 July 2014, a landslide occurred in the village of Malin in the Ambegaon Taluka of the
Pune district in Maharashtra, India. The landslide, which hit early in the morning while residents
were asleep, was believed to have been caused by a burst of heavy rainfall, and killed at least
134 people. The landslide was first noticed by a bus driver who drove by the area and saw that
the village had been overrun with mud and earth. In addition to those dead, more than 160
people, and possibly up to 200, were believed to have been buried in the landslide in 44
separate houses. Rains continued after the landslide making rescue efforts difficult.

Cause:

The landslides were caused by heavy rainfall that had begun the previous day, with the village
receiving 10.8 cm (4 in) of rain on 29 July and the downpour continuing throughout the following
day. The environmental destruction that resulted in the landslide is believed to have had more
than one cause. Another cause cited as contributing to the landslide was deforestation in the
area. One reason was changing agricultural practices villagers had recently shifted from
cultivation of rice and finger milet to wheat, which required levelling of steep areas, which
contributed to instability of the hills. Also the construction of the nearby Dimbhe Damten years
ago was considered as a possible reason. The instability of the hillsides was due to the
construction activities, which are often done without careful analysis of environmental
consequences. Stone quarrying, among other types of construction, was specifically blamed by
Sumaira Abdulali of the Awaaz Foundation, for the instability of the hillside.

Casualties

Though initial reports stated that the landslide had killed 17 people, officials expected the death
toll to exceed 150. As of 4 August 2014, the death toll had reached 134. The bodies so far
recovered were of 50 men, 64 women and 20 children.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of conducting the following research was to know the actual reason behind
the landslide occurred in Malingaon so that in future such precaution should be taken by
government in other areas where symptoms of such incidents are seen and people can be saved
by not going under such natural disaster

Main objective was to know the following points

Causes behind the landslide in Malingaon

Precautions to be taken in other forest areas so that such incident

does not take place in future

Facilities provided by government after such natural disaster

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
4

Descriptive and analytical type of research methodology was used to conduct this research.
Descriptive research includes surveys and fact findings enquiries of different kinds. The major
purpose of descriptive research is description of the state of affairs, as it exists at present. In
social science and business research it is quite often use the term Ex post facto research for
descriptive research studies. The methods of research utilized in descriptive research are survey
methods of all kinds, including comparative and correlation methods. In analytical research on
the other hand the research facts or information already available are analyse to make critical
evaluation of the material.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

The study is carried out with both of the information source, i.e. primary and the secondary data
with a sample size of 30.
Primary research is defined as factual, firsthand accounts of the study written by a person who
was part of the study. The methods vary on how researchers run an experiment or study, but it
typically follows the scientific method. One way you can think of primary research is that it is
typically original research. In this research, primary data was collected by conducting surveys
and enquiries with people who suffered from this incident.

Secondary research is defined as an analysis and interpretation of primary research. The method
of writing secondary research is to collect primary research that is relevant to a writing topic and
interpret what the primary research found. For instance, secondary research often takes the form
of the results from two or more primary research articles and explains what the two separate
findings are telling us. Or, the author may have a specific topic to write about and will find many
pieces of primary research and use them as information in their next article or textbook chapter.
When sifting through the research to locate what we want, an easy way to locate primary
research articles is that they will be written by a researcher who conducted the study. For
instance, a researcher examined the stress hormones in people who owned cats, dogs and no pets.
Another researcher looked at the stress people say they have and how many pets they own. In
these examples, a researcher is examining and writing about the study they conducted.
