by LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT PART I APPLICATION & ANALYSIS

Application in your own words

Step 1- one page- write about the Classical and early Romantic
period in context. Include life style, literature, art, politics,
fashion and music (achieved question)
Step 2- one page focus on European music (late 18th and early
19th century). The most influential composer (J. Haydn, W.A.
Mozart and L. van Beethoven). (achieved/merit question)
Step 3- two pages focus on Beethovens life and his musical
style. Include the letters to his friend in your pre-task as part of
Beethovens life (friendship, the 5Ws). List his works and finish
with his Symphonies. List the Symphonies by order number, key
and if they have an extra title, please include and explain (eg.
Eroica)
Step 4- one page- a detailed programme note for (your choice of
famous orchestra in the world) performance of Beethovens
Symphony No.5. Typical programme notes usually include brief
historical background, dedication/commission details it was
originally written for, the very first performance of the work,
structural outlines of the music itself, and some interesting
historical/contemporary reviews of the work. Use your
knowledge and imagination, and present it as interesting and
detailed as you can. (merit/excellence question)
Also, as the symphony will be performed with another piece of
Beethovens symphonic work, make a decision on which piece
the orchestra will perform. Include your reason in the programme
note as how this piece compliments/contrast with Symphony
No. 5.
Please noteThe page/s required for each step are a guideline; you should focus on
the quality of your writing/content rather than meeting the page/s requirements.
Pictures/photos that help explain your writing can be included if you provide caption
for them.

Please include a bibliography with your APPLICATION part of the

assignment, listing all the resources you have used (books,

Step 2- provide all the movements in playing order, with the tempo
indication and time signature. Is this typical of the Classical
symphony setting? Why/why not?
Step 3- compare the scores of Symphony No.5 with Haydns

to the size of the orchestra, number of different instruments used,
structure (form), tempos and dynamics used. What do you think the
most important difference is? And why?
Step 4- list the opening keys for each of the movement, and
highlight in the score if you hear any significant changes of key
(major to minor, or vice versa)
Step 5- choose either the exposition, development or recapitulation,

Beethoven develops the first and second subject to create a sense of
