Streamwood Manufacturing Camp

Message From The Village President

The Streamwood Manufacturing Career Exploration Program introduced

Streamwood High School students to careers in manufacturing, emphasizing
work ethic, industry skills, and career opportunities. The program required students to undergo an application, interview and selection process. Students were
required to participate in classroom activities as well as tour local businesses,
and report back on the knowledge gained throughout the week.

Our Community and Economic Development

Commission (CEDC), in cooperation with our
industrial businesses and School District U-46,
held its first Streamwood Manufacturing
Career Exploration Program. This program offered fourteen Streamwood High
School students the opportunity to examine
todays white collar manufacturing careers.
Students spent the week learning to apply the
skills they are learning in the classroom to the
real world, with an emphasis on work ethic,
critical skills, and career opportunities. This
was a competitive process that required the
students to apply, be interviewed, and to President Roth tours KSO Metalfab
manage camp participation as though it was during the Streamwood Manufacturing
a job. They had to ensure they were on Career Exploration Program.
time. They had classroom work and tech work along with daily plant tours. At the
end of the week, the Village held a network luncheon and acknowledgement program
to recognize the participating businesses and students. Everyone was impressed with
the enthusiasm and dedication each student exhibited. They were engaged and excited about the opportunity. Our sincere thanks to participating businesses Aluminum
Coil Anodizing (ACA), Fresh Express, KSO Metalfab, Rydin Decal, and
Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, who dedicated time and resources to educate students about careers in manufacturing. Special thanks to Julie DiPirro from ACA who
helped with the interview process and members of our CEDC who established the program. This opportunity was made possible with assistance from Sams Club and the
Walmart Foundation, School District U-46 Career and Technology Coordinator
Kinasha Brown, and SHS Industrial Tech Teacher Matt Erbach. We hope to make
this an annual event, and have the program serve as a model for others.
Would you like to see our students in action? Come out to watch our next generation
of leaders as we host our 2015 Student Government Day Mock Board meeting, on
May 13 at 7:00 pm. I am always inspired by the students passion and persistence as
they learn how local government works, debate issues that may face our community,
and get a better appreciation for public service. We invite you to join us for Student
Government Day. See our youth in action, as they take over the town.
We had the pleasure of recognizing over 70 public service volunteers at our annual
commission reception. These volunteers share their time, talent and knowledge in
order to keep Streamwood a great place to live, work and play. Special thanks were
given to those members who had service milestones, including Ron Franczyk, Jan
Klee, Jim Stock, Rick Bayne, Paul Adeyemo, Tom Fidanzia, Leanne
McRill, Steve Migala, Khaja Moinuddin, and Rich Winterfeld. We also bid
farewell to Bob Migala, of the Zoning Board, and Jan Klee, of the Blood
Commission, who announced their retirements after 32 and 25 years of service,
respectively. Thank you all for your dedication to our community! If you would like
to volunteer to participate on a Board or Commission, please contact my office, at
(630) 736-3800, or visit our website at www.streamwood.org.
Please join us as we commemorate and salute the ultimate act of public service. On
behalf of the Village Board and Streamwood Veterans Commission, we invite you
to honor those who gave the greatest gift at our Memorial Day Observance on
Sunday, May 24, at 11:00 am.

Sincerely,

Billie D. Roth, Village President

case the call gets disconnected.

Go Green
Monarchs and
Milkweeds
T h e
monarch
butterfly
is one of
the most
recognizable
insects
in the United States. It is known for its striking orange and black colors. Every year the
monarch undertakes one of the worlds most
remarkable migrations, traveling thousands
of miles from Mexico, across the United
States, to Canada in the spring and back
again in fall. The monarch is the only butterfly known to make this two-way migration.
But the monarch butterfly is in trouble. The
monarch population has declined recently.
Nobody knows why, but the loss of their habitat
is strongly suspected. Butterflies lay their eggs
on specific plants called milkweed. Although
adult monarchs feed on the nectar of many
plants, the female only lays her eggs on milkweeds and the larvae appear to live entirely on
the plant, eating only those leaves. Chemicals
from the leaves remain in the monarchs system and make the adult monarch butterfly poisonous to predators. In the Midwest, milkweeds were once common, but the use of herbicides has reduced their range and growth.
The Natural Resource Conservancy Commission
encourages you to get involved in helping the
monarch butterflies! There are simple steps we
can take to help save the monarch. Every backyard can become a monarch oasis. Plant milkweed. Habitats for monarchs can be anywhere
as long as there is milkweed growing. The most
common species of milkweeds for this region
include Common Milkweed, Swamp Milkweed,
Butterfly Weed, and Whorled Milkweed. You
can also minimize the use of insecticides. The
monarch butterfly is an insect, and so spraying
insecticides will kill them and any other butterfly. Make the commitment to help save the
monarch butterfly!
