Types of Gasket Materials

A wide range of gasket materials are used in the industry for various purposes and
their composite will vary based on the content that is being transferred.
Non-Asbestos
A majority of non-asbestos gasket materials in modern times uses fiberglass, aramid, Kevlar
or miner fibre. They are used as tight sealant and is good for oil, chemical or water transfers.
Red Rubber
These gaskets are constructed using multiple types of synthetic and natural rubber
components. It is a versatile material because of rubber and can be deformed to meet your
requirement. The product is good to use on flange surfaces and certified ones will meet
Rubber Manufacturing Association rules.
Neoprene
Neoprene is another rubber material gasket which is available in different variants including
die cut, moulded and custom designs. The material offers increased grip and has high
tolerance capacity.
Gum Rubber
A pure variant of gum rubber made gaskets are used in sand blasting booths. It is made
from organic materials and is capable of withstanding high temperature levels. It has selfhealing capacity and is weak against sunlight as well as oxygen.
EPDM
Gaskets made using this material are highly resistive against water, ozone as well as oxygen
which makes it useful to be applied in open condition sealing. They can be used in different
weather conditions and are commonly used in low pressure pipe seals.
Buna-N 60
The gasket is manufactured using the copolymers acrylonitrile and butadiene. When the
percentage of the nitrile is increased to high levels, it develops resistance to oil and
petroleum while it resists high temperatures when used in minimal quantity.
Buna-N
Gaskets made using Buna-N materials have high resistance against oil and UV rays. They are
made using nitrile material and can be used in sealing variety of stuff including oil based
transfers as well as edible oil transfers.
Silicone
Some of the notable features of using a silicone gasket include high resistance to fungus,
capable of withstanding extreme levels of high as well as low temperature, It has a low
compression set and resistant to UV rays. The gasket is offered in rolls which can be cut to
your requirement.
Sponge
The variants of sponge gaskets include closed cell sponge made using pure polymers, blends
and open cell sponge. It also includes open cell foam and closed cell foam materials. When
combined with rubber, they are used as cushioning materials and has good resistance
against liquid, UV rays.
FKM
FKM gasket materials which are also known as Viton commonly is made using fluoro rubber.
The base product is a single layer which uses fluoro elastomer material for construction and
is used in sealing gas or relevant substances.
Viton
The gaskets are made using fluoro elastomer materials and actually refer to the same

products sold by DuPont Company. It is a commonly used name which refers to the product
FKM and is used for gas related transfers.
Flexible Graphite
These gaskets are made using exfoliated flakes and often used in extreme conditions
including aggressive chemical transfers. It offers reliable sealing and has high torque
resistance capacity. It is available in industrial grade and pure grade variants.
PTFE Sheet
The material offers the tightest sealing solution which can be used for the entire pH range
and can be used with high temperature as well as cryogenic applications. Sheets are easy to
cut into specific requirements.
