Aims and Objectives
To impart knowledge of stress and strain on solids and fluids along with knowledge of analysis of forces acting on
them. The analysis will be extended to the machines involved in governance.

Deformation of Solids
Concept of stress and strain Normal and shear stresses simple and compound stresses relationship between stress and
strain Elasticity Poissons Ratio concepts of strength, Stability and Stiffness.
Bending of Beams
Concept of shear force and bending moment bending moment and shear force diagrams for simply supported, cantilever
and overhanging beams. Plane trusses and frames Types of trusses Analysis of forces in truss members
Mechanical Vibrations
Undamped free vibration of single degree of freedom systems Natural frequency viscous damping Transverse
vibrations of shafts- critical or whirling speed Rayleighs and Dunkerleys method Forced vibration harmonic
excitation - Magnification factor - Vibration isolation and Transmissibility Torsional vibrations -Holzers analysis for
torsional vibrations with multi rotor systems
Mechanics of Fluids & Measurements
Surface Tension Capillarity Viscosity Newtons Law Fluid pressure and pressure head fluid velocity and
acceleration uniform and steady flow
Eulers and Bernoullis equations pressure Losses along the flow
Flow Measurement: Manometer Venturi and Orifice Meters Flow through Weirs Principles of Open channel flow

Turbines & Pumps
Introduction to and classification of Turbines Rotor Blade Profiles and their importance with respect to hydraulic
efficiency specific speed turbine characteristics speed governance.

AIMS:
The course is aimed to impart concepts and in-depth knowledge of thermo dynamics Laws through which
they will be able to understand the operation of engines, turbines, compressors, refrigeration and air
conditioning.
