Aims and Objectives
To impart knowledge of stress and strain on solids and fluids along with knowledge of analysis of forces acting on
them. The analysis will be extended to the machines involved in governance.
AIMS:
The course is aimed to impart concepts and in-depth knowledge of thermo dynamics Laws through which
they will be able to understand the operation of engines, turbines, compressors, refrigeration and air
conditioning.
BASIC CONCEPTS AND LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS
Classical approach: Thermodynamic systems Boundary - Control volume System and surroundings
Universe Properties - State-process Cycle Equilibrium - Work and heat transfer Point and path
functions - First law of thermodynamics for open and closed systems Second law of thermodynamics Carnot cycle - Concept of entropy Principle of increase of entropy - Basic thermodynamic relations.
IC ENGINES AND GAS TURBINES
Air standard cycles: Otto, diesel and dual cycles and comparison of efficiency - Working Principle of four
stroke and two stroke engines - Open and closed cycle gas turbines Ideal and actual cycles
STEAM BOILERS AND TURBINES
Formation of steam - Properties of steam Use of steam tables and charts Steam power cycle (Rankine)
Reheating-Regeneration-Modern features of high-pressure boilers Heat Recovery Boilers- Mountings
and accessories - Steam turbines: Impulse and reaction principle Layout diagram and working principle
of a steam power plant.
COMPRESSORS, REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING
Positive displacement compressors Reciprocating compressors Indicated power Construction and
working principle of centrifugal and axial flow compressors - Unit of refrigeration - Basic functional
difference between refrigeration and air conditioning Various methods of producing refrigerating effects
(RE)
HEAT TRANSFER
One-dimensional Heat Conduction: Plane wall Cylinder Sphere
