onia Narasaki is not your typical

chef and restaurateur. She is not
trained in a classical sense, but more
in a maternal sense. Narasaki cut
her culinary teeth in her mothers
kitchen when she was a child. Her mothers
tutelage is the very inspiration behind her
Granite Bay eatery, My Thai Table.
My mother cooked all the time and taught
me about Thai cooking from an early age,
she said.
Narasakis heritage is Thai, as is her adopted
mothers. Her father is Japanese-American.
Although the majority of her cooking focuses
on Thai dishes, she did pick up some Japanese
recipes from her Grandmother for the sake of
her fathers palette.
My dad tends to not eat a lot of spicy
food, so my grandmother taught me a few
things he would like as well, she said with
a laugh.
Narasaki adds that the one Thai dish her dad
really enjoys is her fried rice. The fried rice was
one of the early dishes her mother would leave
to Sonia to prepare as well as any baking that
needed to be done.
I do have a bit of a sweet tooth, so the baking kind of came naturally, she said.
After 20 years in the jewelry business,
Narasaki decided to shift her career focus. She
explains that she was always cooking for social
gatherings, and friends would tell her she
should open a restaurant. Not only was she
cooking socially, she was catering on occasion,
and after some time she realized she could
indeed make a living doing something she
loved. Being a chef was a natural fit.
I kept hearing,Sonia, you should
open a restaurant over and over in
my head, and just decided to take
the chance, she said.
Although she has lived in
Citrus Heights, Narasaki
decided to scout locations in
Granite Bay. She settled on a
suite in Quarry Ponds Town
Center and never looked
back.
Her initial concept was more
of a lounge-type atmosphere,
which she says was nice but did
not hit the mark as far as what her
clientele was looking for. She had to figure out

what level of relaxed her customers wanted.
It took some trial and error and eventually
the motif evolved from a lounge-type feel to
what it is today, with a little help from a
friend, she said.

arasaki befriended a customer by
the name of Meg Talley who, by
trade, was an interior designer.
Although Talley had limited experience in commercial decorating,
she leapt at the chance to help My Thai Table
grow. Warm wood tones and Asian accents
adorn the space with soft light colors as a compliment. Light fixtures are shaped like Lotus
Blossoms with blue parasols dotting the ceiling
as well. The booths are open and cushioned
and adorned with throw pillows giving the dining area a feel of home, and the exhibition
kitchen makes one feel they are a guest in
someones home instead of a customer in a
restaurant. Naraskai says not only has her business grown since the refit, Talleys Business has
taken off as well.
Since she completed the work on my place,
her requests for commercial design has taken
off, which is well deserved, Naraskai recalls,
adding that Talley knew exactly what was
needed, from fresh flowers to low intimate
lighting, and aromatic plants surrounding the
patio area.
We also added inscriptions on the wall
which signify a traditional Thai wish of good
fortune to all who enter, she notes.

lthough the interior of the restaurant took some work, the menu is
wonderfully traditional Thai cuisine. Chicken Satay, Spring Rolls,
Soups, Noodles, and Currys are
the norm and according to Narasaki, made
fresh from scratch. Living in the farm-to-fork
capital of California affords her the ability to
source locally and cook from scratch. She
credits her mothers tutelage for passing on
the knowledge of how to find and/or grow the
fruits and vegetables unique to Thai cooking:
It helped her develop her sense of Shop fresh,
cook fresh.
With the selection offered by local farmers
markets, I am able to find just about everything I need for my dishes, she says. I get the
majority of my vegetables there and whatever
else is required, I grow.
The fresh vegetables are the foundation of
one of the menus most popular items which
are the Fresh Spring Rolls, containing noodles,
lettuce, herbs, cabbage and shrimp and are
served with a Thai-peanut sauce.
The Red and Green Curry are mainstays on
the menu, and Narasaki takes great pride in
making them from scratch. As of late, she says
she does not cook as much as she would like
since her business has grown and her responsibilities have increased, but she still finds
time to prepare the days offerings. She has
hired a full-time chef to handle the main line
and, along with five other employees, keeps
the place running smoothly.
Not only is the menu dotted with a great
selection of dishes, the restaurant offers an
array of fine wines and imported and domestic
beers. Along with the regular menu, Narasaki
finds time to offer seasonal dishes when the
freshest ingredients are available at market.
Sonia says she has found time to pass on
her love for cooking to her kids and is the
recipient of the occasional breakfast in bed,
courtesy of her nine year old daughter and ten
year old son. She says teaching her kids is not
only about the food, it is a sense of heritage
her mother taught her to embrace and love
through her dishes. It is also about seeing the
effect her food has on her customers.
The thing I love most about what I do is seeing people enjoy my food and being able to
share a part of me and what I love, she attests.
With her growing clientele it is evident
Sonia is doing just that each and every day.

ranite Bay residents are discovering something that Californias chapter of the
National Kitchen and Bath Association
already knew Guchi Interior Design has one
of the premier interior designers in the state.
Designer, Pam Steinberger, won first place in
the California competition in the category of
medium and large baths.
But the award wont be a surprise to the hundreds of homeowners who have used Guchi for
design help or to remodel their homes.
Bruce Kawaguchis compact showroom celebrates five years in the Roseville location this
month, and both Kawaguchi and Steinberger
bring several decades of experience to the job
that they love.

island in the kitchen, new stainless steel
appliances, walnut cabinetry, and LED
lighting. In the living room, a new slate
tile fireplace and mantle and bookshelves
were added.

Guchi is primarily a design/build company
with 70 percent of their work focused on
remodels.
Its easy to see why homeowners are deciding
to remodel. The housing market is heating up,
resulting in low inventory, and home prices are
heading up, as well. But what it really comes
down to is that people who are looking for the
perfect house arent finding what they want in
this market.
They look at homes that are out there, and
they figure theyre going to have to remodel,
anyway. So why not remodel and stay where
they are in a home that they already love,
Steinberger said.
As Granite Bay homes are aging, the remodel
craze isnt slowing down any time soon. It all

starts with the first step figuring out what
you want. But dont try to plan a remodel on
your own.
Its overwhelming, Steinberger said.
There are too many choices.
A successful project depends upon
a design team to determine what you
like, and to explain the functionality
of every product.
When youre trying to piece
things together on your own,
you dont know the quality of the
products or the subcontractors, Kawaguchi said. When
we do your design/build you
can count on quality work
and the timeline that youve
been promised.
Since style and material
choices are vast,
Steinberger recommends finding one
surface or item
that you love, then building a room around it.
A good designer will keep your
home from looking thrown together and will

have access to products that you wont be able
to find on your own.
Our vendors are educated on every product
and were constantly finding new things,
Steinberger said. We will help you build your
design, and it starts with finding out what you
want the room to do for you.
During a recent remodel Guchi was able to
change dated family room media built-ins
to a sleek room with a flat screen above the
fireplace. Odd cutouts between rooms were
transformed in to a space that was clean, cohesive and complemented a kitchen that was reconfigured, moving the cook top away from
the center island seating area - a safety hazard
for young kids in the house.
Steinberger replaced double sinks with the
more popular single sink and revamped lighting, using tape lights beneath cabinets and in
displays.
While you dont want to follow trends for the
sake of keeping up with the neighbors, some
trends just make sense.
Were remodeling master baths and creating curb-less showers, which look really nice,
Kawaguchi said.
Curb-less showers give a cleaner look and
eliminate a trip hazard. Other trends include
freestanding tubs in the master and replacing
wood shutters with shades, allowing better
views and light. An added bonus shades
reduce glare and increase energy efficiency.
The bottom line is you shouldnt try to create
a cohesive design on your own. Many contractors allot money for items, sending homeowners to select materials on their own.
You want someone who will make sense of
myriad choices. You want someone to explain
the pro and con of every material type.
Our job is to explain how products and
surfaces will react, and to help the client
determine what will work best for
them, Steinberger said. Making the
client happy in the long term, thats
our goal.

ranite Bay is likely one of the fittest communities in California, and when a community can combine fitness with fundraising, everybody wins.
This is the seventh year that the Eureka
Schools Foundation will host their annual
Fund Run, an event that promotes fitness,
community, and raising dollars for important
enrichment programs. And these programs
that make Eureka Union School District stand
out, wouldnt be possible without dedicated
volunteers like Jessica Keefe and Christie
Heiskell, ESF board members and co-chairs of
this years Fund Run.
Every year we brainstorm to figure out how
we can bring more people to the run, Keefe
said. Three years ago we added a 10K run,
which was a great idea because there are so
many runners in the community.

Keefe said the number of runners has

increased each year, and this year they expect
around 1,000 people to lace up their racing
shoes.
In addition to runners, the Fund Run is a
great community event for walkers or for those
whom want to participate in kids activities
and the annual pancake breakfast.

And for anyone who has thought about buying running shoes and getting outside this
summer, volunteer coaches have been training runners people who have never run
before, and people who have conquered the
5K and are ready for something bigger.
Some of the runners whom we are coaching have never even walked around their own
block before, Keefe said. Several of our volunteers are professional trainers and they are
here to coach, answer questions and hold people accountable. This run is completely doable with your kids, your friends and your
neighbors.
But with so many runners in the area, theres
incentive for the serious athlete to participate,
as well.
There are lots of awards, Heiskell said.

foundation to improve school programs.
The dollars that are raised benefit
every student in the district by providing
librarians, new technology, music and
choir, athletics and more, Keefe said.
All these enrichments are so important
for kids, and as everyone knows, the programs arent being funded by the state

worries: You can enjoy authentic South-of-the-border cuisine
right here in Granite Bay.
Though service is quick, this is
no fast-food restaurant. When 50
percent of El Sombreros lunch
crowd is Spanish speaking, you
know the chef is creating highquality meals that are true to owner Ageo Sanchezs Michoacan
roots.
Living in California since he was
a teen, Sanchez spent time in both
San Jose, working as a contractor
and business owner, and in the
Sacramento area.
When he relocated his family to
Roseville and Granite Bay, he
spent his weekdays in the Bay
Area, tending his window business
and his weekends here, attending
his two kids baseball games and
other activities. What he didnt do
was enjoy good Mexican food.
My wife and I were frustrated,
Sanchez said. We were always
looking for a good taco or burrito,
but we would have to drive to
South
Sacramento or to
Auburn to find
anything that

40 minutes to find
good food. We have to do something about this.

After 11 years, El Sombrero is
thriving, and Sanchez
recently expanded the restaurant

to include a bar area that serves
wine and beer and has additional
seating.
But in the end, its all about the
traditional flavors.
Authentic
tacos,
Sanchez
describes them as something you
would find on a cart in Mexico, or
as street tacos are filled with the
freshest onion and cilantro. Taco
fillings are varied, including carne
asada, chicken, barbeque pork,
and even chorizo and lengua
(beef tongue).
One of the most popular menu
items is the enchilada, which
comes a la cart or on a combination plate. Enchiladas are topped
with authentic, homemade
sauces. Other delicious menu
items that are hard to find in this
area are the aguas frescas, which
are fruits mixed with water to create refreshing and traditional
drinks using cantaloupe, strawberry, mango, and even horchata,
which is a mixture of rice, milk,
water and cinnamon.

any children who have

attended Granite Bay
High School have heard
of the Green Machine. You have
seen the coach you have
watched him explode on the sidelines. Most have seen him grow a
high school football program into
a nationally recognized powerhouse. However, many do not
know the whole story behind
what makes up this man, including his love that goes into being a
husband and father: It is a story
that offers new respect for the
man we call Ernie Cooper, or
Coach Coop, and its a story that
explains why we consider him a
Hometown Hero.
Coach Coop grew up in Aptos,
California, a small town near Santa Cruz. Thats where, at the age of
23, he began his teaching and
coaching career as an assistant
defensive coach with a strong
plan to become a head coach in
the future. He met his wife Carol
while living in Aptos. She was a
hair stylist with a thriving business. They were living the dream
on the coast, and life was good.
In 1996 Aptos principal and
mentor, Ron Severson, invited
Cooper to check out a new school
being built in Granite Bay. Severson knew Coop was interested
in being a head coach again and
so he invited him to a community
in search of one for its new football program. At the time, Cooper
had no desire to leave his coastal
roots. However, the invites kept
coming.
Severson told him, This is
going to be one of the great communities to live in, teach in and
coach in.
Cooper remembers vowing, I
will never come there!
Famous last words. Coopers
wife Carol continued to urge him
to take a look.
Cooper recalls his tour day visiting Granite Bay High School. He
said it was one of those dreary
days in Sacramento, where the fog
never lifted was misty almost

like it was raining. His Aptos
friend, now Woodcreek High
School Principal Jess Borjan, had
offered to help tour Cooper
around Granite Bay. They visited
the area together. Later that
evening Cooper told his wife, I
will never move there, too cold!
Fast forward: Carol Cooper
knew her husband was itching to
be a head coach again. She was
also good friends with Laura Borjan, Jesss wife. Two or three weeks
later, Carol came up and visited
Granite Bay. She loved it. She liked
the schools, the community and
the people. Carol was fired up and
that fire leaked into Coop.
Where else can I have a chance
to create a program, inspire traditions, start a legacy in a blossoming and rapidly growing community? Cooper thought to himself
at the time. Weeks later, he interviewed and was offered the position of Granite Bay High Schools
first head football coach.
Cooper had the fire. He was not
nave to the fact that this new
Granite Bay High School was in a
very competitive league and the
competition was going to be
fierce. But he figured he had the
community, the tools and the staff
to launch the program.
In 1996 Cooper launched the
GBHS Grizzly football program.
He admits this was the hardest
and greatest time in his life. He
put his whole heart and soul into
the program. He thought to
himelf, Man, I am a varsity football coach, coached a few years in
college, and I am starting at the JV
level here. We are going to kick
some fanny!
That year Coop quickly learned
how tough the SFL can be.
During the programs first year
the team went 1-8-1 (one win,
eight losses and one tie). They did
not win a league game. It was an
eye-opener for the coach and his
staff. He gathered his young assistants,

Ernie Coop Cooper, also known as the Green Machine,

has taken Granite Bay High Schools football program to the
heights of success. While Ernie Cooper loves winning on the field,
his biggest passion is spending time with his wife Carol and
daughter, Miko.
Mortensen, Chet Dickson and
Keith Burcham, together to
regroup. The coaches huddled up
and agreed to make some rapid
changes. One of the biggest early
adjustments they made turned
out to cause the most instant
change in the young football program.
They
two-platooned
(meaning the kids either played
offense or they played defense).
Typically teams have their best
athletes go both ways, so the best
athletes are always on the field.
Coop thought, We live in a community where a great deal of kids
want to play. Lets give them a
chance. If we platoon our players
and do our job as coaches, this
would mean that next year we will
have 22 returning starters to the
program.
Today Cooper directly attributes this form of coaching to the
Grizzlies recipe for success.
In 1997, the school football program celebrated their first varsity
team win and won the next two
games, but then lost the next seven. Carol remained steadfast and
always supportive. She never
would let Cooper lose hope. She
kept him motivated to keep work-
ing the program. They seemingly

were the perfect couple, together
and passionate about each other,
as well as with the students
involved at the school and in the
football program.
1998 was the turning point for
the team. The two-platoon program kicked in, the athletes were
inspired, in shape and began to
see growth. They began the year
with three non-league wins, two
losses and then amassed 19
straight victories. Cooper won two
section titles and took 25 wins
across a stretch of 26 games. Grizzly Pride had been launched.
Cooper had also developed a
system where kids were happy.
Most chose the positions they
wanted to play, and as long as the
position they chose made sense to
the coaches they were able to play
that position. There was no arguing, no debate.
The football program continued to develop, amassing section
playoff appearances year after
year. The program even saw athletes achieve success in collegiate
football programs and the NFL.

In 2007, the couple welcomed
their daughter, Miko (me-ko) to
the Cooper family. This young lady
quickly became a mainstay at all
the games, always dressed like a
cheerleader and warming the aluminum seats in the stands by her
mother Carol. Miko called plays
before the coach would call them.
She has become quite an athlete
herself, having just been awarded
her Second Degree Black Belt and
achieving National Champion status in Tae Kwon Do.
Life changed for Cooper and

Carol after Miko. Her young life,
smile and loving energy brought
out so much more than being a
football family. She became identified as the athletes symbol of
luck, and was always seen around
the sidelines. Many times she was
lifted high on the field after important wins. Yes, life had changed.
Coop eventually found himself
desiring rest and a little time to
enjoy his ladies at home. In 2012,
the Granite Bay Grizzlies reached
the pinnacle of high school sport
success by capturing the Division
One State Championship. That
same year, Cooper also received

statewide Coach of the Year
accolades. It was time. He decided
to take a step back in 2013 to catch
his breath. He returned in 2014, reestablishing the staff of the future
by bringing back a pillar of coaching strength, Coach Jeff Evans and
his father Lee.
Cooper felt it was time to pass
the head coaching torch to his
nine-year assistant, Evans. Dont
let this fool you into thinking that
Coop will not miss football at
Granite Bay. He will remain as
strength and conditioning coach,
and now has the title of the
schools Director of Football Operations. Carol and Miko were disappointed by Coopers choice to
step aside as the head coach, but
realize that this change would give
new meaning to him being one of
the most inspiring and engaged
cheerleaders the Grizzlies have
ever had, on or off the field.

hough the program is not yet a decade old, two

of the nations top rugby players reside in Granite Bay and play for the Grizzlies.
Chase Bixby and Matt Rodgers, who just returned
from the 2015 High School Boys All-American game
last March in Las Vegas, are back home and ready to
lead Granite Bay to a national title.
Its great to have one of those guys on your team,
but I have two, said Granite Bays head coach Jason
DiVine with a big grin. Im one lucky dog, but its not
something that Im taking for granted.
Bixby and Rogers both team captains and both
seniors this season have gained national exposure
for their talents on the rugby pitch. Bixby, who stands
6-foot-6, has earned numerous awards and has committed to Arizona State as he continues his career at
the collegiate level.
I really liked the program down there, Bixby said.
Theyre on the up-and-up and I wanted to help contribute to hopefully lead them to a Varsity World Cup.
His coach recognizes his importance as well saying,
Hes a veteran, High School All-American and hes
played rugby for the USA under-19s, so hes getting a
lot of attention. His height also puts him in the limelight because hes great in the lineouts.
Rodgers has gained his own following thanks to his
speedy, 5-9 frame and cleaver maneuvers on the pitch.
Matt is the best scrum half Ive ever played with,
Bixby admitted. Compared to the national scrumhalfs that Ive played with, hes just so creative with the
ball, hes great at organizing people and hes not afraid
to make a tackle.

The pair comprise the heart and soul of the Grizzlies

squad this season.
Theyre the type of guys that keep the boys glued
together, DaVine said. They make sure the group is
pumped up and focused at the right times and theyre
kind of like an extension of the coaching staff in that
regard.
The duos experience in Vegas helped form a bond
between them thats only going to grow stronger.
Chase had already been on one tour, but this was
my first, Rodgers admitted of the Las Vegas Invitational. So he took me under his wing and showed me the
ropes. That really brought us together and our friendship definitely grew from that.
The two Granite Bay standouts werent the only
ones to take the field inside Sam Boyd Stadium as

professionals of the USA Sevens the fifth leg of

the 2014-15 World Rugby HSBC Sevens World Series
squared off before and after the high school
All-American game.
Being able to play in such a big stadium was unreal
I couldnt believe it, Bixby confessed. We shared
the field with the pros and played in between two professional World Series games, so the crowd was insane;
it was packed.
The roster for the USA Rugby Boys High School AllAmerican sides included a total of 28 players and Bixby
and Rodgers were two of the 15 Californians competing in the event.
It was an incredible experience, Rodgers added. It
was a lot of fun because we were able to meet kids from
all over the country and even kids from other countries. It was also fun to learn rugby and watch it being
played at the highest level.
The chase for the Cup did not favor the USA High
School elites as they fell 31-5 in the Final scoring their
only points on a second-half try.

Bixby and Rogers are great at what they do because
they are smart, DiVine stated. They are serious competitors that know the game. Leadership from guys like
that is demanded.
In the final week of March, Bixby will once again represent the US as part of the USA Sevens, under-19 team
on the London Tour. He will return to join the varsity
team as they play in the 2015 Boys High School National
Rugby Championship in North Carolina on May 14-16.
We want to be able to compete at nationals and
bring the title back to Granite Bay, Bixby said. Since
were a relatively new club, its important for us to make
a statement that we are serious competitors.

athryn Body found a career in yoga

by accident. Literally. As an active 22year-old, Body survived a severe car
accident. Doctors told her that she would
never be able to resume her active lifestyle,
and that her knee would have to be replaced.
Through intensive physical therapy, however,
Body has been able to stave off such a
replacement, crediting her yoga practice with
keeping her active and in one piece.
I stepped into a Bikram class and absolutely
loved it, Body recalls. I was very drawn to the
physical nature of the practice and have continued with it ever since, through my pregnancies and the births of both of my kids. Im very
grateful for having good health as a result of
regular yoga practice. Its helped me tremendously over the years, and its had an incredibly
positive impact on my life. Thats why I decided to open a studio.
Body has been practicing for the past 20
years and operating her studio for the past
four. Formerly known as Bikram Yoga Lincoln,
Body Yoga has been in their current Roseville
studio on Blue Oaks Blvd. since November of
2014. Body Yoga offers several types of classes
scheduled throughout the day, starting as early
as 5:30 a.m., and running as late as 8:15 p.m.
Students can opt to take Bikram classes (more
commonly known as hot yoga) for 90-minute
spans in a room heated to just over 100
degrees. The studio also offers Rest-orative Yin,
Ashtanga, Power Yoga, and Gentle

Yoga classes, depending on students needs and abilities.
Ashtanga and Restorative
Yin, while similar to Bikram,
are offered without the heat.
Once a week, the studio
offers Gentle Yoga, an
hour-long class for
students with physical restrictions that
make regular classes
unfeasible.

do have limitations,

loss. Yoga is unique in the sense that its a
low-impact form of activity, making it suitable for just about anyone.
Most of the physical activities that we do,
even in youth, are very jarring on the body,
Body explains. The beauty of yoga practice is
that its non-impactful, youre using your own
body weight.
But as with any fitness regimen, success
depends on putting in the time and hard work.
Body, who previously worked long and stressful hours as a textile designer in San Francisco,
understands how the pressures and demands
of work and family can derail even the best
intentions.
At least 50 percent is showing up, isnt it?
she asks aloud. As with anything in life, you
can always make excuses. Anyone can do this

practice, truly anyone. Because I feel so passionately about this practice, Im trying to
eliminate all the excuses for people. You cant
come because you work 9 to 5? Guess what,
we have a 5:30 a.m. class and we have showers
here so you can get ready here and go to work.
You dont like the heat? Were offering unheated classes now. Write it on a schedule and be
honest with yourself because youre worth it
and show up.
She adds, As far as my family and my kids
go, I hope that theyre learning by my actions,
more than by my words, how to take care of
themselves. My hope is that people will come
back and it will become a life-long practice
and that they feel better about taking care of
themselves. Its pretty amazing when you realize you can do this.

The sun is going down as four musicians haul their

gear through the doors, glancing into the gin-joint
dimensions of a club laced in sensuously grotesque
paintings, sin-red Victorian wallpaper and dusty vintage
photographs framing ladies of the night. A severed goats
head eyes them from the left. Carrot-colored rails of light
are flaring on gilded ceiling tiles. The band sets their guitar cases and drums on a low stage in the corner. If these
surroundings look like a doorway back to a cabaret in
Storyville, it doesnt bother the members of Humble Wolf:
After all, the groups new album has all the hallmarks of
a timeless trip through the edgier realms of Americana.
Humble Wolfs show tonight at The Shady Lady in midtown Sacramento marks their second appearance since
the debut of the album Black and White. Two years ago,
when Rosevilles wolves were gigging across California to
support their first effort, Paper Thin, they told the Press
Tribune that they werent afraid to incorporate any musical genre or sonic spectrum into their songwriting. With
the launch of the highly polished Black and White,
Jayson Angove, Christian Winger, David Albertson and
Jesse Sherwood have squarely if subtly made good on
that promise.

his shoulder. Across the room, a waitress

pauses near a few tables. If you havent seen
this band before, dont go anywhere, she
tells her patrons.
Humble Wolf lights off with Life is a River,
a leisurely Southern rock tune with wrenching, rolling guitar rifts and a sharp, cutting
twang off the telecaster. The Shady Lady is
full to capacity. As the band lets the final
notes ring out, a loud applause reverberates
through the snowy halos blinking on old
fashioned chandeliers. The next song the
wolves start up is Going Away, a chiming
ballad marked by acute snare work and
punctuated by the walking accents from
Albertsons sunburnt jazz bass.
But this Tuesdays Gone-type of opening
is only one side of Humble Wolf; and the
crowd is in for plenty of electrified annunciations before the evenings done. The new
albums namesake, Black and White, is a
cool current of crunch, relentlessly pushed
by a juggernaut kick drum and amp-stacked
fills and solos. The albums third track This
Should Scare You rocks on its own tense

tightrope, grooving and grating under its
hard, prophesying vocals. Another standout
in the collection is the bleak, spirit-breaking
Im Not Like You, wholly unique in its
fusion of Mississippi Delta licks over a
moody pipe organ and the beats staggered
swing all of which lends alarming credence
to its unforgiving lyrics.
It was two damn years of hard work and a
lot of writing, Angove said of the album
before the show started. But I wouldnt
change anything about it; and I still like to be
as eclectic as possible.
Adjusting one of his tom-toms, Sherwood
agreed with a few short words: Yeah, I think
its some next level s***
So far, there has been no shortage of fans
who agree with that statement. In addition to
tonights full crowd at The Shady Lady, Humble Wolf has ongoing shows at Rosevilles Bar
101. They are also celebrating the launch of
their new music video on YoutTube, Going
Away. Roseville singer Rebecca Peters has
been joining Humble Wolf on the stage:

Peters was a guest singer on the album, sitting in for Going Away and Trust.
Humble Wolf has also been asked to headline a new musical festival to be held on the
Sacramento City River Walk on May 23.
Called the First Festival, the event will indeed
be the first of its kind for the Capital City
waterfront.
For Albertson, performing in a wide variety
of venues is a crucial part of the experience.
Were playing out of town as much as possible, the bassist said. Were doing shows as
far south as San Luis Obispo.
And while the road may be calling, the
members of Humble Wolf are stopping to
take a quick breath after the long fought
endevour to get Black and White to the
public.
It was worth everything in the end,
because we are pretty happy with it, Winger
stressed. Were glad to see it done. Im more
proud of it than anything Ive ever put on a
recording before.

Small Business Administration (SBA),
small businesses represent
99.7 percent of all employer firms. Since 1995, small
businesses have generated
64 percent of new jobs,
and paid 44 percent of the
total United States private
payroll, according to the
SBA. Small businesses are
great for the economy.
They are the backbone of
our community!
According to research
conducted by Goetz,
Fleming, and Rupasingha,
Recent studies suggest
that self-employment has
tangible positive economic impacts not only on
wage and salary employment but also on per
capita income growth and
poverty reduction.
CBS News reported that
84 percent of the workforce are dissatisfied with
their jobs and are looking
to leave their jobs. This figure was 60 percent in 2010.
This number is shocking,
but if you work for the
man then odds are that
you can relate. This does
not say that these workers
are planning to start their
own businesses, just that
they are dissatisfied with
their jobs. The U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics does
have some interesting
information in this area.
They say that 10 percent
of all current workers seriously dream of working
independently in their own
business. Thats a huge
number of people that
want it, but havent done it!
For a few of these people, its because they hate

bosses, and they cant find
any solution other than
working for themselves.
For most of these folks,
however, they have a
deep desire to spread their
entrepreneurial wings and
build a dream theyve
been holding for years.
Instead of working to help
someone else grow their
dream, they long to build
their own dream.
When starting a business, you dont have to fire
your job before hiring
yourself. Many entrepreneurs start one or more
businesses as a part-time
side gig, thus, taking
most of the risk out of the
equation.

Just because you start
and run your own business, doesnt mean you
will be wealthy. Considering that most businesses
fail in the first few years,
it would be ignorant to
assume that if you build it,
you will prosper. There
are serious downsides too,
but proper planning and
preparation will help eliminate or lessen many of the
risks. For example, most
business failures did not
have a business plan.
On the bright side, the
vast majority of wealthy
people got their wealth
from their own business.
According the book, The
Millionaire Next Door
(p.8), Self-employed people make up less than 20
percent of the workers in
America but account for
two-thirds of the millionaires. On the next page
they explain that many of
these types of businesses
could be classified as
dull-normal such as pest
control, welding contractors, etc. Over 80 percent
of these millionaires are
first-generation affluent,
meaning they didnt inherit their wealth. Thats right,
theyre self-made millionaires! Even when it comes
to billionaires, almost all of
them earned their 10figure sums by creating
a business from scratch,

not by rising through the
corporate ranks.
Robert Kiyosaki, author
of the best-seller, Rich
Dad Poor Dad, tells people they can be millionaires and shows them
concepts how. After all,
Robert went from being homeless to being a
millionaire in about five
years. Robert was no
more special than you
are. If he can do this, you
can do this.

What is a better eating style:

Low-Carb or Low-Fat?
L
ast month, I attended a

conference for the Nutrition
and Metabolism Society in
Denver. The overall theme of the
conference focused on which
style of eating was better for longterm health: Low-carb or low-fat?
Its a topic that has been debated
over and over. I am bursting with
information, no pun intended,
that was received from the experts
in the field of Nutrition and Obesity Medicine; and am excited to
share with you what I learned.
Insight One: You can lose weight
on either a low-fat or low-carb diet,
but you will experience more
favorable changes long-term in
body chemistry on a low-carb diet.
Study after scientific study
showed that a moderate reduction in dietary carbohydrates sufficed to prevent overt illness and
inflammation in the body. In other words, consuming a low-carb
diet reduces your risk for cancer,
reduces or eliminates Type 2 diabetes, overweight and obesity,
improves blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, and conditions your body to rely on stored
fat for energy all favorable
changes.
Interestingly,
unfavorable
changes in body chemistry are
more prevalent in a low-fat diet.
This type of diet can have a negative effect on the body by conditioning it to rely more on carbohydrates for energy, which increases
insulin production leading to
insulin resistance, carbohydrate
intolerance, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.
Insight two: People vary widely
in their tolerance to carbohydrates. The carbohydrate-tolerant person has a wider range of
food options, whereas the carbohydrate-intolerant person does
not and stands to benefit the most
from carbohydrate restriction.
Today, humans have become
more carbohydrate intolerant because past dietary recommendations have focused on decreasing
fats primarily animal fat in
meat as well as butter, eggs, and
oils. This is because all of those
were once thought to be the cause
of heart disease, obesity and other
illnesses. Out went the natural
fats, which were replaced with
unnatural fats, margarine and
trans fats mixed with carbohydrates, such as high fructose corn
syrup, flours, and modified grains.
The outcome: a low-fat, low protein, high carbohydrate diet.
As a result of this unfortunate
turn in dietary intake, humans are
exposed to a lot more sugar and
starches than the body can handle; and the majority is showing
signs of significant carbohydrate
intolerance, most strikingly in the
form of obesity and diabetes.
Almost all who are overweight
have some degree of carbohydrate intolerance.
Insight three: There are many
diet strategies to reduce energy
intake (calories) short-term but
carbohydrate restriction trumps
calorie restriction long-term.
While a reduction in energy
intake is generally required for
weight loss, the experts stated that
the quality of food intake is more
important than just reducing
calories. Reducing calories is a
temporary fix. Instead, we need
to go back to humans natural
ancestral eating style, relying
more on quality protein and fats
for energy than high sugar foods.
We would be much healthier, and
obesity and diabetes would no
longer be an epidemic of maximum proportions.
Insight four: It was refreshing to
hear again that the way I eat every
day and teach others to eat is a
healthy diet that promotes longterm wellness.

ig Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace; if youve ever visited

London, then likely you have
seen some of these major attractions. But England has a more
subtle attraction: a literary legacy of genius;
men and women who lived, studied and wrote
iconic works on these grounds.
Oxford is the place to go if you love literature.
So my daughter invited my mom and me for a
day of bookish fun that included trains, boats,
and a covered market filled with meats, scones
and Turkish delight.
After jumping off the train from London, an
easy ride that takes less than an hour, we headed straight to Oxfords botanical gardens and
Tolkiens favorite tree under which he was
known to write. The tree eventually appeared
as an Ent in Lord of the Rings. Next up, we visited the bench that inspired Will and Lyras
meeting place in Philip Pullmans His Dark
Materials Trilogy.
Though there are nearly 40 colleges that
make up Oxford University, they are private,
but for a small fee, you can tour many of the
schools.
If youre looking to stretch your legs, a meander through Christ Church Meadow where
great writers, mathematicians and thinkers
have walked before, might inspire you to read
a classic or even write a novel, yourself.
A stop at the Covered Market, which has
been there since the 1700s, is just the place to
grab an inexpensive lunch before heading to

Alices Shop, a store that was remembered in

Lewis Carrolls books as The Old Sheep Shop.
The establishment was once a candy store,
and the famous Alice Liddell frequented the
store for treacle, a toffee-like treat, as a child.
If you want the real Oxford experience, not
the tour thats touted on travel brochures, head
to the Cherwell Boathouse and rent a punt for
the afternoon. There was nary an American in
sight on a fine summer afternoon, and you can
rent a punt by the hour. If youre unfamiliar
with the term, a punt is an oddly shaped boat
that requires a long pole, a muddy river bottom and strong arms. You would think a meander on the river would be suitable for a leisurely lunch, but ducks on the River Cherwell
love to steal food and can be very aggres-

sive. Just a mile or two upriver you will find a

place to picnic and enjoy a pitcher of Pimms
with fruit at the Victoria Arms.
Punting is particularly English, and the great
author, Kenneth Grahame, based his Wind in
the Willows creatures like badger, rat and
toad, on what he saw along the rivers edge.
Bookish opportunities are endless in
Oxford, but you cant leave without seeing the
Bodleian Library. Theres a gift store that
tourists can enter, and if you arrange in
advance, you might be able to see some of
the reading rooms inside the Renaissance
era building.
If you want books that you can take
home, then Blackwell Books, a four-story
Oxford institution since the late 1800s, has
everything from textbooks to antiquarian
treasures. If you can tear yourself away at
a decent hour, theres one more stop that
you must make.
A book lover cant leave Oxford without
raising a pint and sampling a meat pie at
the Eagle and Child, also affectionately
known as the Bird and Baby. The pub has
served food and drink for nearly four centuries,
and is most recently famous as C.S. Lewis and
J.R.R. Tolkiens favorite haunt, where they met
with a writers group they called the Inklings.
The men wrote, argued and shared their literary vision in this very spot and some famous
first editions of these authors, and others, can
be found in the famous British Library, a mustsee when you head back to London.
