You only get one life

By Kate Taylor
We want to see all the beautiful young people in Bacchus
Marsh grow into beautiful old people thats the message
from a Community Social Responsibility night hosted by the
Bacchus Marsh Football/Netball Club.
About 150 people attended the event last Friday night at the
Bacchus Marsh Public Hall.
AFL great and current Port Melbourne Coach Gary Ayres
spoke at the event, which covered respect and responsibility,

drugs and alcohol, violence and peer pressure, with the drug
Ice taking centre stage.
It is cool to say NO, believe me it is cool to say NO, Mr
Ayres told the crowd.
Adrian Bettio from the Bacchus Marsh Football Club
organised the event with Rick Irwin speaking about the
importance of young people having structure in their lives,
pointing out that organised sport can provide that structure.
Research shows we need structure in our lives. What is

structure? School, family, sporting clubs. I left school early

and got a job. Three years later I thought why didnt I study
when I had the opportunity? I struggled through it later in
life and if I can do it, anyone can, but you have to want it.
Structure creates a sense of belonging, Mr Irwin said.
Research shows that if young people are involved in sport
they are less likely to self-harm, abuse alcohol and cigarettes
. in a structured environment they are less likely to go
down that path, and there is less chance of depression.

Little devil notches

up a ton

By Jessica Howard
Darley junior footballer
Abbi Bolt has pulled on her
boots for her 100th game - a
first for not only the club,
but also the Ballarat Football
League.
The 14-year-old started her
football career at just seven
years of age, where she
donned the Darley jersey
alongside the boys in the
Under 9s Riddell District
Football League.
A centre half forward, Abbi
played her 100th game at
Maddingley oval on Sunday
(April 27), where she contributed three goals to Darleys
31-point win over Bacchus
Marsh, and received second
best on ground.
Abbi said her love of football was first sparked at a
young age, after her parents

By Kate Taylor

took her to see her first AFL

game on Anzac day.
I was little and Mum and
Dad took me to the footy to
see Collingwood versus Essendon and they made a bet
with me that whoever won
Id have to barrack for. So
I barrack for Collingwood
now, she said.
At the time I was doing
dancing, but after that I
didnt really like it and so
I guess my love for footy
started from there.
Darley Youth Girls Coach
and Abbis father, Peter Curren said Abbis strong passion for the sport drove her
to want to be something in
life.
Abbi always goes above
and beyond that is her
thing. She has played football her whole life and eventually wants to play in the

AFL. Theres a national draft

for women in 2017 so shes
really pushing herself and
striving for that, he said.
She is such a hard
worker, and her loyalty to
her team members is just
outstanding.
Mr Curren said girls football was a great way for Abbi
and her teammates to bond
and keep them on the right
track.
They make new friends,
and they keep those friends
for life. We have had some
girls who come from sports
that are a bit of a one man
show, and when they come
into this team environment
it really opens their eyes,
he said.
They are all very accepted
within the club. No matter
what happens at school or
at home, they know they

can come to football and be

treated as an equal, its just
about that feeling of being
wanted and praised.
Abbi said football allowed
her to make a lot of new
friends, and was looking
forward to the possibility of
making it to the big league.
Ive made so many friends
and everyone has supported
me so much during these
100 games. They are what
helped me to get this far, so
Im proud of myself but also
really proud of everyone for
helping me, she said.
I really hope I can make it
into the big league and get to
play for the womens AFL in
2020, Im pretty nervous as
its only two years away but
Im just going to try my best
for the next two years and
hopefully get drafted.

CFA CEO Michael Wootten

confirmed that work has begun on transitioning the
site.
As part of this process,
only a few staff members
are entering the site when
required on an as-needs
basis for activities such as
monitoring and assessment
purposes, he said.
Anyone who enters the site
must sign in and out, and
follow the safety measures
that have been in place since
the closure.

Some of these measures

include signs around the
centre and bottled water
provided to ensure the
health and safety of anyone
on site.
CFA also responded to
questions about whether
former staff members at
Fiskville are being paid up
until the end of the financial year, while talks about
future employment opportunities for the nearly 70 former staff continue.
CFA will continue to pro-

vide support for employees

affected by the closure of
the Fiskville training centre
and will meet the terms and
conditions of their respective Enterprise Bargaining
Agreements.

Staff enter Fiskville site

CFA has confirmed that former staff members are entering the toxic grounds of the
Fiskville Training College as
decommissioning of the site
begins.
Ballan CFA Lieutenant
Ian Ireland raised concerns
about staff beginning the decommissioning process.
How can they be allowed
in if the level of PFOS is so
dangerous that Fiskville had
to be closed? he asked.

Post office re-directed

By Jessica Howard
The small town of Blackwood can expect big things
for its local businesses.
After local residents, Michael
Boyd and Darren Lynch took
over the keys of the Blackwood Hotel in January; they
have since begun making a
number of positive changes to
the area.
The business-owners took an
extension of the hotel, which
was originally the towns post
office, and have moved it directly across the road.
Co-owner, Michael Boyd said
that after realising the post office was costing - rather than
making them money; they
decided to move the business
away from the pub to give it
an opportunity to survive.

It was struggling to stay

afloat and so by moving it
across the road weve opened
it up as more of a general store
and that is something this
town really needed, he said.
People were travelling to
Trentham or Ballan for little
things like milk, bread or even
cat food but now we have all
of that available here.
Blackwood has great community spirit and I think
weve enabled both residents
and tourists to use the pub as
a meeting place, whilst also
enjoying the convenience of a
general store
Donning
the
name
Jindarup, the new general
store and post office sells an
array of locally made produce
including paintings, soaps,
jewellery and candles.

Its all about promoting not

only the business, but also the
town, Mr Boyd said.
We have an 11-year-old girl,
Brooke, who comes into the
store each week and sells her
hand-made candles, and at
the pub we serve fresh produce like seafood and vegetables from the local markets.
We are attempting to create
a friendly environment and it
has so far been well-received.
People are coming from far
and wide because they are
hearing about it.
Mr Boyd said they hoped to
turn the empty space from
the original post-office into
a private function room and
were looking to sell original
Blackwood lollies from the
general store in the future.

Ballan cricketer, Noel Heafield has finished seven votes
clear of his rivals to take out
the 2014/15 Bernie Davey
Medal.
The long-term cricketer
took out the Division One
top award after polling 17
votes throughout the 2014/15
Ballarat Cricket Association
season.
The medal is awarded to
the best player in the division competition, with votes
awarded in a 3, 2, 1 format
by the officiating umpires on
the day of the game.
Teammates, Zac Graham
and Michael Snaith finished
equal runners-up alongside
Buninyongs Dan Kitchen on
10 votes each.
Throughout the season,
Heafield accumulated 364
runs, 24 wickets and four
half-centuries alongside the
highest score of 137 runs in
round eight against Burrumbeet. As a result, he was also
named Division One champion player for the season.
Unable to attend the presentation night, Heafields
awards were accepted by
team captain Mick Nolan,
who received an award for
the highest number of wicket keeping dismissals and
also the highest score by a
batsman.
Nolan said Heafield well
and truly deserved the medal as it represented the best
player in the competition for
that season.
Noel started playing for
us a few years ago now and
this was his sixth season as
a coach. He has been a very
consistent performer so it
was good to see him win,
he said.

Its good to see a few players from the same team going home with awards and it
was even better that we won
the grand final a week later.
Mr Heafield could not be
contacted for comment.

Connecting people to the land

A walking track extending
over more than 60-kilometres is planned to link together some of Moorabools
major Avenues of Honour.
The development, which
intends to link the avenues
between Bacchus Marsh,
Myrniong and Ballarat via
a trail and native re-vegetation, is part of a major project
created by Conservation Volunteers, titled the ANZAC
Living Memorial Initiative.
The project was launched
opposite Myrniongs picturesque W. James Whyte
Island Reserve (commonly
known as The Island) on

Thursday (April 30), where

Conservation
Volunteers
chairman Gerry Morvell announced an investment of
$100,000 towards more than
100 projects across Australia
and New Zealand.
These memorial projects
could include the restoration
of existing places, from the
painting of the community
RSL hall to the weeding and
landscaping around historic markers to large scale
commemorative native tree
plantings, Mr Morvell said.
Anzac Living Memorials
provides a unique connection, linking todays volunteers to those volunteers
who joined the armed forces

Moorabool Shire Cr. John
Spain said it was a great
initiative to recognise the
Anzac centenary that will
benefit future generations.
The work that Conservation Volunteers Australia
has undertaken in revegetating The Island is a testament to their ability to undertake large scale projects
that bring about long-term
change and benefits to our
community, he said.
Chair of Grow West and
Land fit for Heroes, John
Cutler said there was a significant touch of emotions
surrounding the Mooraboolbased project, which would

celebrate not only the connection between the people

and the Anzacs, but also
their connection to the land.
We may have just celebrated 100 years, but this is only
day one. On that day, soldiers died, but on this day,
today, soldiers also died
and it goes on, he said.
It is a daily event that this
generation can continue, and
this connection between the
soldiers and the land can allow the centenary to live on.
Closing the official launch,
Mr Cutler recited a poem,
that included works from
Banjo Patterson, honouring
the land and our heroes.

Jumping to break a record

By Jessica Howard

Rich history
on display
By Jessica Howard
Despite the conclusion of
Anzac Day, the rich history
of the First World War will
continue to adorn the walls
of the Lerderderg Library.
Created by the Bacchus
Marsh Great War Centenary
Committee (GWCC) and the
Bacchus Marsh Historical
Society, the displays mark
the 100th anniversary of the
Anzac landings at Gallipoli.
GWCC president, Damien
Strangio said the committee
had created two displays,
which would still be available for viewing for up to
four weeks.
The first is about Australias first military action in

WWI, the attack on German

new Guinea, which is an extraordinary story, he said.
The second involves artwork by a Bacchus Marsh
artist, Lois Outjers. The
theme of her displayed
paintings is poppies. Our
display explains how poppies became so important in
WWI remembrance.
The GWCC have provided
a copy of the important First
World War poem In Flanders Fields, alongside photos and stories from the war.
The Bacchus Marsh Historical Society have also created
a commemorative display,
which highlights the lives of
local soldiers and is affiliated
with the 2015 National Trust

A Darley resident will jump

close to 18,000-feet for joy
this month in an attempt to
break a national skydiving
record.
Scott Clark, 47, will travel to
California with more than
100 other Australian skydivers in the hope of breaking
the current Australian Large
Formation Skydiving record.
Set in 2010, the current record, which included Mr
Clark, stands at 112 skydivers linked in free fall.
Mr Clark took part in his
first skydive in 1985 at the
age of 17, however had a long
period away from the sport
until returning in 2006,
where he has since complet-

Heritage Month.
The display contains photographs of local soldiers, army
records and newspaper articles from the Red Cross, the
Belgium Relief Fund and the
paper of the day, The Bacchus Marsh Express.
Bacchus Marsh Historical Society President, Chris
Bronchinetti said the display
would be available for viewing for another two months.
Because it takes such a
long time to gather all the information, we will keep it up
before starting on our next
display, she said.

feet, however once the final

record team was selected the
altitude would be increased
to around 18,000-feet, where
oxygen would be required
by all jumpers.
Quite a few people from
the successful 2010 record
will also be participating in
this year, in 2010 we actually
broke the previous record
three times in one day, he
said.
The thing I love about skydiving is the diversity of the
sport. There are many skydiving disciplines to participate and compete in.
The record-breaking attempt will be hosted by Perris Valley Skydiving in California, America from May 19
until May 31.

Dr Lawrence Staub laces up his running shoes to compete in his first full marathon.

A Bacchus Marsh chiropractor is on the run for charity.

Dr Lawrence Staub, who
resides in Greendale and
works in Bacchus Marsh,
will run his first full marathon in order to raise money
for his not-for-profit organisation, South Pacific Allied
Health (SPAH).
Founded and directed by
Dr Staub in 2013, SPAH assists the needs of people of
the Makira Province in the
Solomon Islands.
In just over two years, the
organisation has eradicated
illness and skin disease such
as tinea from the lives of
nearly 3000 people through
medical care, training and
education.
Dr Staub will take part in
the Great Ocean Road Marathon on May 17, where he
hopes to raise $1 for every
metre of the 44-kilometre
event.
The proceeds will help provide water and sanitation for
two schools in the Marika
province, including one
secondary school and one
primary school consisting of
300 combined students.
Dr Staub said the fundraiser
was an important step in the
right direction to avoiding
infant and child mortality in
the Solomon Islands.
The biggest cause of infant
and child mortality is to do
with waterborne diseases,
and within this area the children tend to live at school.
They dont actually go home
until mid-year or end of year
as their only mode of transport is walking. Therefore
having running water and
sanitation is critical to dayto-day health and also disease management, he said.
Dr Staub said he had
reached close to a quarter of
his fundraising target and as
the marathon loomed closer,
he was feeling confident.
Im really looking forward
to it, the reality is that so
many people are following
what I have been doing and
a lot of people are going to
contribute to the fundraising so there is a lot hanging
on this event, so I have no
choice to finish it really, he
said.
Im feeling confident about
the marathon, one of the biggest challenges has been the
training as lately Ive worked
up to 80-kilometres a week.
So far, people have been
giving dribs and drabs towards the fundraiser however Im expecting a lot more
in the lead up to the event
and afterwards. A lot of people are probably thinking
Ill donate when hes actually finished, so thats a really good incentive too.

Cmon, lets kick

start this project!
A collection of Moorabools
emerging talent could be
showcased in an upcoming
festival if two local artists
have their way.
Steven Tandy and Benjamin
Dowd of Bacchus Marsh
have launched a Kickstarter
project titled Fruits of the
Loom in the hope of securing enough funding for
a showcase of local music,
art, photography, dance and
film.
Steven, a 23-year-old filmmaker, said the idea came
to mind after he was in the
process of organising a local premiere for his newest
short film STRAYS.
I had discussed with Ben
the possibility of his band
APES performing at the
premiere because theyre an
amazing band and some of
their music also features in
my film. But after a couple of
discussions we realised we
had the potential to make
it so much more than just a
once-off film premiere, he
said.
After a booking was made
at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall for June 12, the co-

organisers realised their

ambitions were bigger than
their wallets, and decided to
initiate a campaign through
Kickstarter.
An initiative which funds
new creative projects, Kickstarter is an online website
where creators set a funding goal and deadline, and
if people like the idea, they
can pledge money to make it
happen.
Steven said they decided to
use the website as they were
reluctant to invest their own
money into the event in case
nobody turned up.
Running it through a Kickstarter campaign and relying on a pre-sale system is a
risk free way for everybody
as the event will only go
ahead if there is initial interest from the town, he said.
If we dont make the target
by the end date, those who
did pledge will automatically get their money refunded,
so nobody is at risk of losing
money.
The project will need at
least $2,500 to cover the cost
of the hall hire, art exhibition
equipment, professional film
projector, screen equipment,
lighting and audio equip-

ment and a liquor licensing

fee.
The campaign has so far
received over $700 and will
end on May 16.
Co-organiser and musician,
Benjamin said he looked
forward to the potential
of Fruits of the Loom as it
would show local artists that
their talent is appreciated.
We dont nurture the creative minds enough in this
town. Artists tend to get discouraged by it due to lack of
support, or [they] leave and
seek support somewhere
else, he said.
Its unfortunate that people have to flock to the city
every time they want to see a
gig or an art expo. Not to say
that Fruits of the Loom is the
solution, but its a step in the
right direction.
Emerging artists so far include filmmakers and animators, Steven Tandy, Josh
Thomas and Donna Yeatman, local musicians Demi
Louise, APES and Hollow
Everdaze and photographer
and artist, Indya Connley.
To pledge, visit https://
kickstart.com and search
Fruits of the loom.

Leading Senior Constable
Philip Benny Wyatt told
shocking real life stories
from his time as a police
officer, highlighting the importance of making smart
decisions and thinking
about consequences - covering one-punch cowards, the
drug Ice, and road safety.
There is no rewind button
when you have an accident.
No turning back. Your licence is the most important
qualification, respect it,
Leading Snr Constable Wyatt said.
When there is an accident
with a fatality I have to
knock on your familys door
and tell your parents what
has happened. When a kid
has hit a tree on their way
home from work, I have to

go to their parents house

and say your son is dead. I
cant tell you how sick you
feel having to do that, turning their life upside down,
the family will never be the
same again. Theres a mother
lying over the dead body of
her son, and then shes got to
sign the paperwork.
Always be accountable
for your actions. Help each
other.
Mr Ayres told his life story,
explaining how his father
was killed when a tractor
rolled on him when Gary
was just 19, saying it made
him grow up extremely
quickly.
In this life you will be
challenged over and over
and over again. Whatever
the decision you make, there
will be a consequence.

Mr Ayres said that his own

daughter battled drug addiction along with mental illness for many years, a journey that saw her in hospital
in a near-vegetative state
from an overdose and also
spending time in jail.
She was a very sick little
girl.
You feel helpless as a parent. Just because I am in the
public eye I feel I am still a
normal parent.
With his daughter leading
a better life since 2009, Mr
Ayres called on the gathered
young people to make good
decisions.
We want to see all the
beautiful young people in
Bacchus Marsh grow into
beautiful old people. You
only get one life, you dont
get any more.

Selling everything that could

include a kitchen sink!

By Jessica Howard

A new market will make

itself at home in Bacchus
Marsh this Saturday.
St
Andrews
Uniting
Church, located on Gisborne
Road, will open their doors
to the public for a craft market and car boot sale.
Co-coordinator, Roz Corban said the idea behind the
market was to provide an exciting new platform within
Bacchus Marsh.
Someone recently said
they didnt want to hold a garage sale at their own home,
and we thought we have a
car park, why dont we hold
a saleyard for people who
dont want to do it from their
own place? she said.
Things like clothes, kids

toys or baby items and bikes

can be sold from the boots of
their car; and because I like
to do patchwork I thought
we could also make an indoor market within the hall
too.
Ms Corban said craftaholics could set up a table
within the Church hall and
sell anything from homemade candles to knitting
and pottery.
Any sort of concept that
someone may have is more
than welcome, she said.
The whole day is basically
a new platform for people
to sell their own products. I
know the area already has
things like the Darley Market, but as someone who
enjoys patchwork, I know I
would want to sell my crafts

inside.
This is a new idea for us
so we are looking for crafty
people around the area, or
those who are just looking to make a bit of money
from things they dont want
anymore.
Ms Corban said if the day
were successful they hoped
to run another two markets
throughout the year.
The market will run from
10am 2pm this Saturday at
St Andrews Uniting Church,
Cnr
Lerderderg
Street
and Gisborne Road, Bacchus
Marsh.

Who really made

Fiskville closure call?

By Kate Taylor

Union interference could

have been behind the decision to close Fiskville,
according to Member for
Western Victoria Region Simon Ramsay.
Calling on the state government in Parliament recently
to assure that the closure of
the CFAs Fiskville Training
College will not mean the
loss of 70 jobs, and seeking
assurance that a new site
will be built in the Ballan
area, Mr Ramsay mentioned
the potential role of the
Union.
I am hopeful the Ministers decision was not based
on a directive from the

United Firefighters Union to

place all CFA training under
the control of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, which
in turn is controlled by the
United Firefighters Union at
Craigieburn, where training
costs are considerably higher, but instead made in the
spirit of firefighter safety,
he said.
Mr Ramsay criticised the
decision to close Fiskville,
saying the fact that it was
made without consultation
with Moorabool Shire Council was just rude and even
arrogant.
The fact the Minister announced her decision on
ABC radio without any
recommendation from the

CFA or until the completion

of the testing regime for
contaminants on the site, or
the opportunity for the joint
parliamentary
Environment and Natural Resources
Committee to investigate
and make recommendations
to Parliament, is disturbing
to say the least.
He called for a new facility to be built on the same
Fiskville property.
It is my understanding the
training and accommodation areas at Fiskville are
free of contamination and
that a new fire pad could
be easily established on another part of the 300 acre
property.

Budget benefits
and changes

By Kate Taylor
As Moorabool residents
consider councils newly released draft 2015-16 annual
budget, the Moorabool News
asked each of the councillors
the same two questions
what do they see as the key
benefit of the budget, and if
they could change one thing
about the budget then what
would it be?

Hannah Clarke is helping to co-ordinate a three-month project designed to empower

refugee women in Uganda. Photos submitted

Up skilling refugee women

By Jessica Howard
A former Bacchus Marsh
resident, who has temporarily re-located to a refugee
camp in Uganda, says it is
important for people to open
their eyes to how the majority of the world is living.
Hannah Clarke, 27, developed a strong passion for
social justice and human
rights whilst she was at high
school.
Her love of travelling and
experiencing new cultures
saw her take part in her first
volunteer trip in 2009, where
she visited Uganda for a period of 12-months as a HIV
educator.
Hannah said volunteering
was a way to fully experience the culture of another
country.
I wanted the experience of
living like a local. My first
trip in 2009 I only had a drop
down toilet, had no running
water and cooked with coals
every single day, she said.
Its amazing how you learn
to adjust to your conditions.
While it may not sound ap-

pealing to some, it was one

of the best experiences of my
life.
Hannah said after falling
in love with the country, the
landscape and the people,
she always dreamt of returning to Uganda.
Six years later, her dream
has come true.
In March of this year, she
returned to co-coordinate
a three-month project designed to empower refugee
women.
Positioned within Nakivale
Refugee Camp, Uganda,
Hannah provides opportunities for women to learn
new skills in order to generate an income, and therefore
sustain a healthy livelihood.
The project provides women with training in order to
create different crafts in the
form of beaded purses, bags
and leather sandals, which
are then sold at regional
markets and tourist centres
in Western Uganda.
Once established, the program will look at expanding
the skills training to include
jewellery and clothing.

Hannah said the program

was incredibly important
because most of the families within the camp were
led by single mothers.
Because of the very few
jobs available to refugee
women they are extremely
vulnerable to exploitation in
many forms, she said.
Worldwide refugees will
be in a camp for an average of 17 years, not just in
Uganda but worldwide. This
means that rather than just
providing them with unsustainable, endless aid money
it is much more effective to
provide people with vocational skills and training
they can turn into a healthy
livelihood.
Hannah volunteers with
a Ugandan not-for-profit
organisation,
TASAAGA
(Tokamalirawo AIDS Support and Action Group), and
said that by working with
the right organisation in the
right project she can make a
global impact.
Seeing extreme poverty
first hand can give you a
human understanding and
connection to greater global
issues that you wouldnt
have exposure to otherwise, she said.
In short, I see volunteering
as an easy way to build positive relationships between
individuals,
communities
and nations across a variety
of cultures.

John Spain
Benefit - Locking in the
construction of the Halletts
Way project; theres another
two bits of infrastructure
as well - the extending and
refurbishing for the early
years hub at Darley, and getting a change pavilion at the
Darley hub oval so weve got
those three projects. Weve
also put a lot of money into
the asset renewal projects.
Change - wed always like to
do it for less money; but until
we get more money from the
feds or the state, we have to
do a lot of it off the back of
our ratepayers.
Allan Comrie
Benefit - Were keeping
it at a five per cent rise so
that hasnt gone up which
is good; the only money
we really get as a council is
through rates.
Change - The most important thing is we need to be
able to raise a lot of money
to do Halletts Way - traffic
is one of the major problems
weve got in Bacchus Marsh,
and we need the government to put their hand in
their pocket.
Pat Toohey
Benefit - This budget
continues a strong focus on
infrastructure in particular
roads, bridges, community facilities and the drainage and footpath network
throughout the shire to
make sure we are ready for

the needs of our growing

communities in a financially
responsible manner.
Change - Our budget
should receive a fairer share
of the state and federal tax
pool, in particular the GST
paid on fuel and registrations charges channelled
back into local roads and
the fire service levy in its
totality spent throughout
the shire to upgrade our
fire access roads, facilities
and fire fighting equipment
to see full value from this
new tax. Ratepayers should
not be expected to shoulder
the burden of infrastructure needs with continued
rate increases while paying state and federal taxes
and not receiving a return
on their investment to fund
the needs of our growing
communities.
Tom Sullivan
Benefit - The continuation
of the Moorabool 2041 project is an important thing its a major piece of strategic
work and weve started the
process with the community, and the next part will
be strategic planning and
that may have some changes
to the planning scheme and
that takes resources, but
that has potential for small
towns across the municipality as well as the large ones.
Change - The thing is, as
with every budget time,
you would like to minimise
the rate increases to as little as possible, thats always
one thing that you agonise
over, but you have to ensure
you can do the work thats
required to be done and undertake the infrastructure
and services that need to be
put in place to service the
community.
Tonia Dudzik
Benefit - This years budget is the first Council Budget
in years to deliver much

needed road and social

infrastructure to Bacchus
Marsh. The western route
of the Halletts way extension is going to be funded, a
new kindergarten hub and a
sports pavilion at the Darley
Hub for sports club use. The
Halletts way extension was
talked about for 20 years.
Now thanks to the hard
work of Council staff and
Councillors it will become a
reality.
Change: If I could change
anything in this budget it
would be to deliver the same
major projects and capital
improvements with only a
four per cent rate rise. Adjustments could be made to
make this possible.
Paul Tatchell (Mayor)
Benefit - This is an infrastructure budget; it provides
badly needed infrastructure
after 40 years of neglect of
the infrastructure requirements of the shire, and it will
take pressure off the road
systems, and also the IT systems that are supportive of
continual cost-savings.
Change - This budget is balanced in expenditure from
East to West and its a holistic view of the Moorabool
Shire, I dont think changing
it would work - with every
action there is a reaction.
So ideally we have to stop
trying to catch up on infrastructure on the back of the
ratepayer and engage our local members to vote for the
people and not the party.
David Edwards
Benefit - The budget provides for some much-needed
infrastructure
including
Halletts Way and is less than
the six per cent rate rise predicted three years ago.
Change - If I could change
anything it would be the
proportion of state and federal revenue to help fund the
infrastructure needs.

Symbolic steel dedication

By Jessica Howard
ANZAC centenary celebrations were extra special in
Bacchus Marsh this year
during the unveiling of a
new war memorial.
A stainless steel dedicatory was unveiled next to
the commemorative Lone
Pine tree, which stands in
the grounds of the Bacchus
Marsh and Melton Regional
Hospital.
The memorial features four
plaques honouring the Bacchus Marsh Legatees, The
Bacchus Marsh RSL, Djerriwarrh Health Services and
the significance of the Lone
Pine Tree.
During the ceremony, a
number of wreaths were laid
at the foot of the memorial by
Ballarat MP Catherine King,
Board Chair DjHS Claire
Sutherland and DjHS Deputy Chief Executive David
Grace, Cr. David Edwards

and members of the Bacchus

Marsh RSL and Legatees.
Bacchus Marsh Legatee,
Derek Williamson said
he designed the memorial alongside RSL member,
Allan Latta and Marshall
Engineering owner, Dean
Marshall.
We put our heads together
and came up with that particular design, then Dean
fabricated it. Its been a collaboration between the hospital, the Legatee and the
RSL for over 12 months, he
said.
The Lone Pine tree was
donated and planted in the
grounds of the hospital after
the First World War, however the tree got beyond its life
point so we put a new one in
about ten years ago.
Originating from Gallipoli,
the Lone Pine was a solitary
tree that marked the site of
the Battle of Lone Pine in

1915. Mr Williamson said

the tree was a representation
of the service by all the servicemen and women of that
time.
The memorial is set up so
on the right hand side there
is the story of the Pine, the
plaque for the hospital is in
the middle and on the left
hand side, which is closest to
your heart, are symbols for
Legacy and RSL, he said.
When you look through
the arch of the memorial you
have a clear view of the Lone
Pine, and theres a cross on
the top which is representative of all the religions and
sacrifices that were made.
The ten white crosses symbolise the ten soldiers from
the area that didnt return.
However they arent just
from the First World War,
but also the second because
we thought we should incorporate everybody.

Core
business
budget

By Kate Taylor
The proposed council budget for 2015-16 is focused on
improving
infrastructure
but there are uncertain financial times ahead.
Moorabool Shire Council Mayor Paul Tatchell
pointed out that a proposal
in the draft federal budget
to freeze indexation of Financial Assistance Grants
to councils, along with the
state government introducing rates capping from next
year, will combine to produce financial uncertainty
for a shire which is already
underfunded.
Council CEO Rob Croxford also said that while the
budget contains a number of
initiatives, including the extension of Halletts Way, the
Darley early years hub and
the Darley oval change pavilion, he is concerned about
the future.
There are many exciting
aspects to this Budget, but
we do face uncertain times

TOM

Environmental Opinion

with the capping of rates

coming into effect next year
and increased demands on
local government service
provision, he said.
Councils provide more
services than one may think
and we would like to continue to provide excellent services and programs across
all our departments beyond
roads, rates and rubbish including recreation, aged
care, family and childrens
services, libraries, events,
youth.it is a long list.
Mayor Tatchell added that
when the Council Rate Notice is issued for the 2015/16
year, it will also include the
costs of the Fire Services
Levy that Council is collecting on behalf of the State
Government.
This will be the third year
that the scheme will be in
place. Even though Council
receives funding to administer the Fire Services Levy,
when Council calculates
the time and effort required
to administer the scheme

in addition to the FSPL it is

required to pay on Council
owned properties, there is
a significant net cost to the
Council overall.
It is disappointing to note
that in recent years Moorabool Shire is increasingly
being subjected to the role
of tax collector for other
tiers of government as is
shown by the Fire Services
levy, the GST Act and various other levies and charges
that Council administers
on behalf of other tiers of
government.
Equally, it is disappointing
that Council is required to
embed in its waste charges
the increasing costs of the
State landfill levy in addition to the additional burden
of increased government
regulation.
Submissions can be made
by the public until 5pm on
Monday 25 May; for details,

Only option is to challenge climate change

I thought this week I would
like to share what some are
doing about climate change
in a neighbouring country
of ours, the Philippines. This
is about a Peoples Pilgrimage. It is interesting these
days to note the number of
people all over the world
who are doing pilgrimages
of one sort or another. This
one is about climate change
and maybe could inspire
one like it in Australia. Apparently the former Climate
Commissioner of the Philippines, Yeb Sano, will be leading The Peoples Pilgrimage
this year. This is the letter he
wrote to his fellow pilgrims.
To fellow pilgrims, movers, missionaries, activists,
peace-lovers, and kindred
spirits, allow me first of all to
offer my sincerest Earth Day
greetings to all. This day is

indeed a day to celebrate, but

also a day to earnestly reflect
on the state of our Planet.
Today, I wish to announce
that I am stepping down as a
Commissioner of the Philippines Climate Change Commission. I will be working
with different faith groups
across the world, as part
of the larger global climate
movement
As we celebrate Earth Day, I
am filled with gladness and
hope as I join OurVoices as
Leader of The Peoples Pilgrimage. This will be a series
of walks to places of climate
vulnerability, resilience, resistance and hope around
the world. The Pilgrimage is
intended to show the depth
of concern and commitment
about climate change of
people of diverse faiths and
none, and to turn the hearts
of those in power to solve the

climate crisis.
To launch the pilgrimage
today along with a group
of Filipino pilgrims, we will
do a symbolic 10-kilometer walk from the Shrine of
Mary Queen of Peace to the
Rizal Shrine in Manila.
In the middle of May,
we will cross San Juanico
bridge as a symbolic departure from Tacloban and say
farewell to the Philippines
and then head to Vanuatu,
recently devastated by Cyclone Pam in one of the most
serious disasters the Pacific
island nation has ever experience. The Pilgrimage will
include Korea, Thailand,
Indonesia, the Great Barrier
Reef, India, Rome, Africa,
and the Americas, amongst
others. Throughout my journey, I will be accompanied
by religious leaders, faith
communities, civil society

groups and individuals.

The Peoples Pilgrimage
will culminate in a 1,500
kilometre, 60-day walk from
Rome to Paris to arrive in
time for the UN Climate
Change Summit at the very
end of November 2015. The
same friends walking with
me today for the symbolic
walk will accompany me
from Rome to Paris. We hope
many others will join us.
Already, millions of people
have lost lives, homes and
their livelihoods as a result
of climate change. Yet the
actions and commitments of
political and industry leaders from around the world
remain profoundly inadequate and fail to secure a
safe and just future for all.
If these so-called leaders refuse to act adequately to confront climate change and deliver the crucial outcome in

Paris at the end of the year,

the People will create a new
parallel world where the climate crisis can be averted.
For instance, the aspiration
of a world powered by 100%
renewable energy by 2050 is
a dream we can and must
build.
If we are to confront our
problems as a human family
effectively and pursue that
bright future we all want,
we must build a better world
eradicate poverty, build resilient and sustainable communities, protect the Earth,
promote honour and integrity, and foster a culture of
caring.
This is a battle we cannot
afford to lose, and as such
I cannot yield from this
opportunity to be able to
make a greater contribution
in the fight against climate
change. As many stood self-

lessly to offer their lives for

the greater cause, we realize
that sacrifices are needed
to win battles. Despite the
gargantuan challenge that
climate change is, it offers
the people of this planet the
rare but golden opportunity
to achieve transformative
change.
The climate change challenge will make the world a
better place. Simply because
it is our only option. We, humans, started this crisis. We
will end this crisis.
Yours in faith,
Yeb

Former Bacchus Marsh

Councillor Russ Hendry has
criticised Moorabool Shire
Council for announcing
projects before they have received full funding.
He addressed councillors
at the Wednesday 1 April
council meeting, asking for
a policy to not advertise projects unless they have full
funding and will definitely
go ahead.
He said that a $70,000 project for new gates at Maddingley Park (Mr Hendry is
the Chairperson of the Committee of Management) was
advertised in last springs
edition of councils Moorabool Matters even though
council had only allocated
$8,000 and was hoping to

have the rest of the funding provided by the state

government.
I just want council to look
at their policies about making announcements about
projects - they shouldnt put
out announcements for projects that are not funded.
I wasnt blaming anyone
for not getting funding, I
was just saying they should
put it in Moorabool Matters
when its funded, announce
it then.
I know funding is hard to
get but dont publish projects until you get the funding, because it gets peoples
hopes up.
Councils manager of Economic Development and
Marketing Peter Forbes responded to the criticism after the meeting.

The Maddingley Park

ANA gates are a project
identified in the Master Plan
for this reserve and scheduled as a project in Councils
Capital Improvement Program for 2014/15 in Moorabool Matters, he said.
Similar to other projects
within the Community
Land and Buildings Section
of the Capital Improvement
Program, as Council was
seeking grants from the State
Government at the time of
printing to enable the project
to proceed as scheduled, this
project was identified in the
program list as subject to a
successful grant application.
Officers are pursuing
funding opportunities that
if successful, will enable
this project to go ahead as
scheduled.

Foley said.

Scholarship provides opportunity

By Jessica Howard
The future is looking bright for Bacchus Marsh College student Joshua
Coulson. (pictured)
The year ten student was recently
awarded the VicRoads Indigenous
Secondary Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to Aboriginal students approaching years 10 to
12 in Victoria.
The scholarship aims to increase
training and employment opportunities for Indigenous youth by providing support for school related expenses, which may include tuition or
tutorial fees, excursions, text books
and uniforms.
With preference given to students
commencing year ten, the program

provides support to successful applicants who remain enrolled and successfully complete their studies until
the completion of year 12.
VicRoads Indigenous Employment
Recruitment Consultant, Chaise
Egan, presented Joshua with his
award at a recent school assembly.
The VicRoads Indigenous Secondary Scholarship program is a broader
initiative of its Indigenous Employment Program, Mr Egan said.
Joshua is a very worthy recipient
and we hope he enjoys our support
as he completes his VCE in the coming years.
Joshua said he was both happy and
surprised to receive the scholarship
as only four of the awards were given out across Victoria.

Our future leaders honoured

By Jessica Howard
There was plenty of youthful enthusiasm in Bacchus
Marsh last week as Moorabool Shire Council honoured
some of the most talented
young people in the area.
Almost 100 people attended
the 2015 Moorabool Shire
Youth Awards on April 16,
where they celebrated the
contributions made by 12 to
25-year-olds, who live, work,
go to school or have other
significant connections to
Moorabool.
The inaugural event, which
coincides with Youth Week,
was held at the Bacchus

Marsh Public Hall and saw

four young people and two
youth committees take out
awards.
Presented by Mayor Cr
Paul Tatchell and Cr Tonia
Dudzik, the awards focused
on the positive contributions
young people bring to the
community.
Winners included pro rodeo competitor Latteliah
De Spirt, filmmaker Steven
Tandy and twin sisters,
Teisha and Shawni Dickson.
A new award was also announced, with two youth
committees taking out the
2015 Mayor Award.

(L-R) Teisha and Shawni Dickson

The Youth Action Group

(YAG) and the OFFtap
FReeZA group were commemorated for their significant engagement with
young people and the planning and running of youth
events in Moorabool.
Cr Paul Tatchell said he had
seen a dramatic rise in confidence in young people.
We allow them to have a
voice and more importantly
we listen, he said.
The youth of today are
leading their own revolution
of change. They have a lot
more to offer these will be
our future leaders.

The Sports Award: Latteliah De Spirt

Latteliah is currently second in Australia in her discipline of rodeo
Breakaway Roping and Barrel Racing. She competed in an event in
Wyoming, America and as a result received a scholarship to study at
Oklahoma Panhandle State University. She has placed second at the
Myrtleford Rodeo and won the Beechworth and Deniliquin pro rodeo
events.
Latteliah was nominated by her grandmother and said to be recognised
in her hometown was very rewarding.
Rodeo has made me the person I am today with big dreams and
aspirations in the future, she said.
I think it is very important to recognise the youth and their achievements
yearly. It makes all that hard work and effort worthwhile at the end of the
day.
The Arts Award: Steven Tandy
Steven is establishing a career as a filmmaker and has already received
the Vice Chancellors Scholarship to study a Bachelor of Film and
Television at Swinburne University. He wrote, produced and directed a
film to promote blood donations for the Red Cross and has produced a
documentary on the history of the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour.
Steven said he was thankful to the town for all their support.
All the films I have made could not have been done without a tight knit
community that helped me to achieve.
Voluntary Contribution: Teisha and Shawni Dickson
Twin sisters who, since 2009, have assisted in the running of the Blue
Light discos in Bacchus Marsh. Teisha and Shawni were instrumental in
establishing the police and community Youth Group with Leading Senior
Constable Jim Ross.
Nominated by Mr Ross, the Dickson sisters said they felt privileged to
receive recognition for their work.
I feel privileged that recognition is given for our contribution to the
community, it keeps the spirit of youth contribution in our community
alive, Teisha said.
Shawni said the Youth awards were important as they created
awareness for the achievements of the youth of the area.

Letters to the Editor

Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au

Dear Editor,
A new $100-million war museum at the Australian memorial in Villers-Bretonneaux will
have a foreign field as its roof,
and take inspiration from old
sacrifice and new technology to
tell the story of the Anzacs on
the Somme.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott
revealed details of the design
of the interpretive centre, to be
known as the Sir John Monash
Centre, on a visit to the fields of
the old Western Front
- Sydney Morning Herald
April 26
I like history and observing
the interest in Gallipoli these
days, it seems a lot of other
people do also.
I enjoy interpretive centres as they inform us in
an engaging and colourful
manner.
If we were a nation where
all our population was enjoying sound shelter, health,
food and education fairly, we

could enjoy many extra community facilities over and

beyond our basic needs.
Our Treasurer tells us we
are not as wealthy as we
ought to be and that we are
grossly in debt and he is
being as creative as he can
to spend our money more
wisely while paying off billions of dollars of debt.
Is this the time to be spending $100 million on an interpretive centre in France?
Even if its completion
would not coincide with
the 2018 Armistice date, its
time would come, once the
government budget is sorted
and in the eyes of the government we are living in better times and we can afford
such things.
I saw things similarly when
we were told of the state of
our debt and the Treasurers
budgetary solutions and the
governments idea to add a
levy on Medicare to pay for

a special medical research

facility.
I thought that it was not the
right time to be paying for
a new entity like a research
facility when we were being told how much we need
to pay to get us out of a big
hole. The idea didnt seem to
fit the budget rhetoric at the
time. We could not afford it.
Now we have the federal
government not funding
the smaller Western Australia indigenous townships, which has led the
W.A. Premier suggesting his
government cannot afford
to provide basic community
services to over 100 communities. Mr. Barnett has said
that the citizens can stay in
their communities but no
services would be provided.
Imagine (dont get any ideas) no more services to some
of our communities like
Newbury, Maude or Wallace
and many more of our small-

Dear Editor,
As the local MP, I enjoy meeting and working with people across our region who want to
make our vibrant community even better.
Being the state representative for a large electorate can be very satisfying and Ive been
pleased to deliver local investment for a number of important projects in Ballan. This
includes the Mechanics Institute redevelopment, streetscape works, upgrades at Ballan
Primary and local sporting facilities, including the tennis courts, netball court, skatepark and the pavilion at the Recreation Reserve. We also have a new ambulance station,
upgrades at the train station and improvements to rail services.
Sometimes however, I know Im going to cop some flack, especially when theres
something happening in our community that needs action.
I like so many others in the community am disappointed that the CFA determined to
close Fiskville, although we must remember that CFA management has a responsibility to
ensure the ongoing safety of fire-fighters and staff working at Fiskville. The results of the
tests which were provided to them showed that this could not be guaranteed. I therefore
must accept their decision.
We also must not forget the affected workers from Fiskville as we deal with the challenges
this decision brings.
I want to assure you, that I have been in constant contact with many of the key people
involved with managing this issue and that, all is and will be done to support those who
have worked on the Fiskville site. CFA CEO, Michael Wooten has assured me that the CFA
have established a working group to develop and implement a plan to provide ongoing,
individualised support for all staff involved.
In regard to finding a new site, the CFA is leading the identification and acquisition of a
new site for hot fire training in Moorabool Shire, preferably close to Ballan and an external
consultant has been engaged to assess future state-wide training needs.
While I understand the frustration that many people feel, and that these things never
seem to move fast enough. Some of the accusations levelled at me personally have been
unsubstantiated, unwarranted or just completely wrong. Reports that I did not attend
an important community meeting in Ballan concerning Fiskville, due to taking leave for
a 3 day camping holiday with my family during school holidays were false. I actually
interrupted my trip to return specifically for the meeting.
Its critical that the state government, CFA, Moorabool Shire and local business continue
to work closely together to support those workers affected and the broader Ballan
community.
I continue to make myself available to assist in any way I can to help those affected by
the transition.
Geoff Howard MP
State Member for Buninyong

er communities, from council, state or any government.

When thinking of the human lives these cutbacks
will affect, the impact it
may have for generations,
again, I dont think the timing is right to be spending
$100 million in France for
the luxury of an interpretive
centre when this amount of
money would be close to the
amount the Federal Government is denying our smaller
and important communities
to exist.

Dear Editor,
Recently I attended the
Bacchus Marsh library to
hear the experience of a
veteran of the Vietnam War.
To hear it first hand was a
real eye opener. No matter
how many stories you hear
about or read about, there
is always a new experience
to hear.May we forever go
on supporting these people.

thoughts and prayers.

Dear Editor,
I read with great interest Ms
Del la cruzs letters (MN 28
April) to the editor.
It seems she is a true environmentalist in every sense
of the word. She appears so
knowledgeable on all matters and always so keen to
share this with everyone.
I have one question. Is she
a self appointed advocate for
all or a paid one?
Sue Dean
Mt Egerton

Dear Editor,
I am sorry that my friend
Rose De la Cruz from the
Moorabool
Environment
Group (MEG) (Letters, MN

28 April 2015) does not appear to concede that a commercial wind turbine close
to a dwelling can be an
unfair imposition upon the
resident of that dwelling.
The reason(s) why this may
be so include factors such as
audible noise, visual impact,
vibrations or other subliminal impacts, and/or inequitable distribution of derived
income from these moving,
substantial, industrial structures standing over twice as
tall in the rural landscape as
the old Gas and Fuel buildings stood in Flinders Street.
What there is no doubt about
is that some affected or potentially affected people
are mightily upset in this
regard. With regard to the
house mentioned in her letter, the more important issue
is that someone is moving,
rather than who the owner
is.
If wind farming is such an
economic as well as environmental benefit, then surely
the reasonable approach that
MEG should be advocating is
that wind farm proponents
be required to generously
buy out any landholders living within a prescribed distance of a planned turbine
who want to move. If developers assert that there is no
significant loss of amenity,
then they should also agree
that such acquired properties will be easily sold on the
open market.
What a reasonable buffer
distance should be is subjective and cannot be completely addressed by undertaking
medical or acoustic investigations. In this regard a
precautionary
approach
should be adopted. The former Government nominated
a 2 km buffer, the present
Government has wound this
back to a 1 km buffer. In
my view, having observed
wind turbines close-up, a 2
km minimum distance is the
appropriate precautionary
approach.
Roses other letter in the
same issue objects to a
Queensland letter being
published, and asks to keep

to local input please. Perhaps she should also be objecting to the long-running
Environmental Opinion column directly below her letter. My friend Tom Kingston
lives in Tasmania.
John Kowarsky
Ballan

Dear Editor,
I read Rose de la Cruzs letter last week (MN 28 April)
and was curious about her
comments regarding the
regular letter writer Viv
Forbes from Queensland.
I did some checking on
Google and found out that
Viv Forbes is not a she but
a he. Mr Forbes is chairman
of the Carbon Sense Coalition and could be said to be
a confirmed climate change
sceptic. He is also a director
of Stanmore Coal and has
over 40 years of coal industry experience.
One can now better understand why Viv Forbes holds
the views that he does on renewable energy alternatives.
I dont think non-locals
should necessarily be barred
from voicing their opinions
in the local newspaper. Very
often one can get a better
view from the outside looking in. However, I do feel Mr
Forbes is an all too frequent
contributor, harping on the
same themes and obviously

Perhaps when he writes in
he should state his credentials and background, making it clear that he is writing

when Ms de la Cruz wrote

Champion service for pets

By Jessica Howard
One of Moorabools most luxurious
resorts has received a prestigious
award, however not for the hospitality of humans.
Vern Ryans Pet Resort, located
in Balliang East, was awarded Pet
Service of the Year at the 2015 Australian Small Business Champion
Awards, held on April 18.
With over 1,000 guests in attendance, the awards were held in New
South Wales and celebrated a broad
range of industries from all states

and territories.
Culminating from ten years
of planning, Vern Ryans resort
opened in 1999 and specialises in
stimulation programs, training and
cat and dog accommodation, with
housing ranging from standard to
penthouse suites.
Mr Ryan said it was a huge thing
to be recognised by an Australianwide competition.
Its probably the most highly recognised competition in Australia.
Weve entered quite a few over the
years and weve been finalists for

the Telstra Business Awards for

five consecutive years, however we
believe this is even bigger so we are
pretty stoked about that, he said.
Mr Ryan, who runs the business
along side his son Luke, said that
as passionate dog lovers, they have
a great insight into the care of
animals.
We are highly experienced dog
behaviourists and we are also passionate, I think that gives us a great
insight into dog and cat care and we
are very proud of the work that we
do.

Benefits agents
bring to a
local sale

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV
Buy local campaigns support local businesses, helping ensure they survive
against competition from
shopping malls and major
retail chains. But buy local
and sell local also applies to real estate agencies,
and regional and suburban
agents are a vital resource
for both buyers and sellers.
Many local agents grew up
in the town where they now
do business. They know every street, every park, every
school, and are a walking
directory on everything
from where to get the best
cup of coffee to the nearest
train and bus service. Buyers
can obtain all this information in a single, face-to-face
conversation.
Local agents are also familiar with local house prices.
They can give sellers a realistic appraisal of what their
home will fetch and show
buyers what they want within their budget.
They also maintain databases of house-hunters and
those who missed out on
previous sales and can call
on these people. Sometimes,
this means a property sells
before the marketing campaign begins, saving the

vendors money.
In many towns the local
agent is an integral part of
the community, a supporter
of charities, the go-to person for a publicity board for
the school fete and a mine
of information about local
goings-on.
Local agents move with the
times, using the latest online marketing techniques
to deliver a wide array of
exposure for each and every
property. REIV members
have access to the most upto-date training and seminars, which helps further
with online and social media elements to campaigns.
An increasing number of
agents in regional Victoria
and outer suburbs are also
helping their clients sell by
auction, and have expertise
on when an auction is the
best method of sale for a
house, unit or apartment.
The popularity of auctions
within Melbourne, especially in the past 12 months, has
increased demand in some
regional areas - where previously most transactions
were private sales.
Agents also offer a further,
local element to campaigns
their own shop window,
which provides high exposure for properties for sale.
Even today as internet
marketing takes hold, main
street agents windows not
only show buyers what is for
sale, but other locals. And
word-of-mouth is a vital
source for buyers.
The local agent is a key part
of any vibrant community
and buying and selling with
those agents is helping keep
those communities healthy,
dynamic and informed.

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

17&Under - Ballan dominated with a 13 goal first quarter setting up a great win.
Ballan 28 def Clunes 7.
C Grade - Clunes took an
early two goal lead but Ballan were determined not to
let them get away. Ballan
pegged back Clunes with
great defence from Rebecca
Treadwell, Simone Dunne
and Eliza Rivette who all
took timely intercepts and
put the pressure on Clunes.
Just a single goal separated
the teams at half time before
captain Ash McKay led the
girls to an 8 to 5 goal last

quarter as Ballan stormed

home to win by 2 goals. Ballan 28 def Clunes 26. Best on
court Sam McKay.
B Grade - This game was
played at a high intensity
from the very first whistle,
resembling a finals type
match, it went goal for goal
with neither team able to
shake the other off. Rebecca Conroy was brilliant
through the centre controlling both ends of the court.
Melissa Conroy and Kylie
Fenwick continued their
excellent defensive pressure
but it was not enough to get
ahead. A costly last quarter
saw Clunes take the match.
Clunes 32 defeated Ballan
28. Best on Court - Kathy
Burquest.
A Grade - Ballan 41 def
Clunes 20. Best on court Stacey Casella.

Blues return to form

Ballan Football

The start to the season by

the Senior Blues was not
the plan if they were to grab
a finals berth. However,
on Saturday they turned
that around by thumping
Clunes in an away match. It
was thought to be a tough
match going into the game
as Clunes had come close to
beating Bungaree the week
before. The second half saw
the Blues put the foot down
on the accelerator with Daniel King and Marcus Crook
booting 12 goals between
them.

Bacchus Marsh v
Sunbury
The wind certainly played a

part in this match with Sunbury taking advantage of the

breeze.

Taking

every

opportu-

nity to kick through the big

sticks, Sunbury booted sev-

en unanswered goals in the

first quarter; followed by another ten in the second half.

The lady Cobras put in a

great effort and had disciplined determination despite what the scoreboard
said.

The team did keep Sunbury

to only one goal in the sec-

ond quarter with key player

Cat Hynes going down with

a ruptured achilles after a

gutsy performance all day.

Final score - Sunbury 18-

21- 129 to Bacchus Marsh

Incredibly honest 4-Y-0
Metropolitan/Bye The Deep
South mare Tullulah Bay
broke the $100,000 stake
barrier when successful in
the $8505 Pace Final for C2

at Tabcorp Park Melton on
Saturday.
Trained by Glen Parks Bassie Steenhuis and driven by
teenage son Zac, Tallulah

Easing into the three wide

despite making the home
bend very wide, ran home
strongly to record a 1.7 metre
victory over Reign Of Pain
and Spicy Stride a much improved third. The mile rate
1-58.5.

The Cranbourne meeting

on Monday April 27 was a
good one for the Melton area,
with Lance Justice snaring a
stable double with Blacks
A Beauty in the Pace for C1
class over 2080 metres and
Jean Babtiste the Pace for C2
class over 1609 metres.

over Partnersinvancelot and
Richly Deserved in a rate of
2-01.9.
At Horsham on Wednesday,
Melton co-trainers Maree
and John Caldow produced
a very smart colt by the
name of Madeeba to impressively take the 2-Y-0 Pace
over 1700 metres when making his race debut.

Meltons Dianne Giles was

also a winner at Horsham,
when 4-Y-0 Righteous Hanover/Bubbas Babe gelding
Bad Boy Brad greeted the
judge in the Pace for C0 class
over 1700 metres in a slick
1-58.6.

Mount Cottrell trainer

Joanne Mangion was victorious with 8-Y-0 Wind Cries
Maori/Chelsea Trick mare
Tawonga South at Kilmore
on Wednesday, taking out
the Trotters Mobile for T0 &
T1 class over 1690 metres.

Andy and Kate Gath snared

a stable double at Kilmore,
with Majestic Son/Starcus
filly Naked Majesty scoring
in the 3-Y-0 Trotters Mobile

MUCH MORE THAN

A PRETTY FACE.

The release of the new 2016

Mitsubishi Outlander with its
stunning and sophisticated design
heralds a new class of SUV.
If the recent Mitsubishi National
Dealer release in Sydney is a
form guide to its future, then the
Outlander will win both many
Australian Consumers hearts
and minds.
The representatives from Kings
Cars Ballarat Mitsubishi who
travelled to Sydney for the
release not only were able to
see the covers come off but
also learn the more technical
workings and drive the vehicles
in what can only be described as
extreme driving conditions.
Dealer Principal Peter King had
a perfect vantage point of the
New Outlander when the covers

from all over Australia, many of

which represent other brands in
addition to Mitsubishi.
This response was repeated
when Simon attended the
Service Managers release to
find out what makes these
vehicles tick and also when it
was unveiled to Willy and Steve
in the Sales Team Presentation.
Mitsubishi Outlanders Head
Designer was on hand to explain
the many features and some
of the 180 changes that have
transformed the Outlander.
Firstly of course was the visually
striking new design face which
will be evident in future models

premium grade materials

to improve the feel and
functionality of the vehicle from
both a driver and passenger
viewpoint. A redesigned
steering wheel which feels
totally connected and tactile,
new accent trim and improved
seating comfort compliment
a cabin that feels both
comfortable and sophisticated.
The changes made to the
Outlander though are more than
merely skin deep. Indeed it has
substance. The New Outlander is
equipped with a new generation
Continuously Variable
Transmission (CVT) which offers
improved acceleration and a

body reinforcement and power

steering enhancements.
The New Outlander retains the
5 Star ANCAP Safety rating and
is equipped with all the active
and passive safety features of its
predecessor, including Adaptive
Cruise Control and Forward
Collision Mitigation available on
the Exceed model.
Armed with all the theoretical
improvements we then were
given the privilege and absolute
thrill of taking both Petrol (2WD
and 4WD) and Diesel (4WD)
Outlanders through their paces
on a proving ground complete
with hairpin and hook turns and
then opening them up on the
straights.
Done over consecutive days,
it went from wet to wetter to
torrential. In fact for Willy and
Steve had never seen rain like it.
They were convinced the track
day would be cancelled due to
what was regarded as the worst
storm in Sydney in 10 years. But
even Mother Nature couldnt
rain out this parade with the
Outlander coming up trumps on
all surfaces and in all situations.

came off. We had seen sneak

peeks in photos but in the flesh
the New Outlander is even more
stunning..over the years I have
been to many vehicle releases
but dont remember any that
have had such a positive and
immediate response.
The reaction was super positive
with praise and comments
such as stylish, sophisticated,
athletic, rolling of tongues. This
is all the more significant when
you consider that you are in a
room with nearly 200 dealers

to come, dubbed the dynamic

shield, how it was conceived
and its function and form.
Other visual changes are many
and varied and include such
things as a sharper redesigned
and attractive rear, chrome
accents , LED Day Time Running
Lights, Silver roof rails, new 18
alloy wheels and rear LED tail
lights.
Internally the Outlander has
received substantial upgrades
with so touch features and

more responsive and smoother

on-road performance and feel.
Carmakers constantly seek
to reduce the NVH (Noise,
Vibration and Harshness) of
their offerings. Mitsubishis
quest for excellence with the
New Outlander has seen 39
improvements made in this
area.
Maneuverability has been
enhanced with an improved
steering response, better
handling and ride feel through a
more rigid suspension system,

To demonstrate the extreme

handling and safety features
of the Outlander we were all
treated to some hot laps by an
experienced driver who seemed
determined to have us test the
durability of the grab handles
and stain proof abilities of the
seating. The demonstration
of the Traction Control and
Active Stability control (ASC)
and ABS with Electronic
Break Distribution (EBD) was
incredible. In fact so reassuring
was the Outlanders sure footed
capabilities that most of us
could actually relax and enjoy
the thrill of each subsequent lap
secure in the knowledge that
none of the 7 airbags equipped
in the Outlander would not
need to personally introduce
themselves.

Most I say could relax, except

Steve for despite finally opening
his eyes nearly had to have
the grab handles surgically
removed as he held on for dear
life and wouldnt release. He
can certainly attest to their
durability.

Looking sharp boys ! - William & Mark at the

recent (and very wet) Outlander drive day.

The result from all the changes

was evident to us all. The
new Outlander is a vehicle
that not only looks and feels
the goods inside and out, it
is also significantly smoother
and quieter on the road. It
has increased performance
and responsiveness and
maneuverability but also
remarkably has across its
petrol range reduced its
combined highway/urban
consumption to as low as 6.7L
per 100km (ADR81/02) for
the 2WD LS Automatic model,
which in theory is just over
940km per tank.
The New Outlander is so much
more than just a pretty face it
has raised the bar in the SUV
market and this class act
will be a global
game changer.
