1. Using tall 5 70 MPa and G 5 27 GPa, determine for each of the aluminum
bars shown the largest torque T that can be applied and the corre-sponding
angle of twist at end B.

3.The material of which each of three shafts is made has a
yield stress of tY and a shear modulus of G.
Determine which shaft geometry will resist the largest
torque without yielding. What percentage of this torque can
be carried by the other two shafts? Assume that each shaft
is made of the same amount of material and that it has the
same cross sectional area A.

4.A portion of an airplane fuselage can be

approximated by the cross section shown. If the thickness of
its 2014-T6-aluminum skin is 10 mm, determine the maximum
wing torque T that can be applied if tallow = 4 MPa. Also, in a
4-m-long section, determine the angle of twist.

5. A hollow brass shaft has the cross section shown. Knowing that the
shearing stress must not exceed 80 MPa and neglecting the effect of stress
concentrations, determine the largest torque that can be applied to the shaft.
For the calculated torque find the angle of twist if the shaft is 1m long.

6 An inflatable structure used by a traveling circus has the

shape of a half-circular cylinder with closed ends (see
figure). The fabric and plastic structure is inflated by a
small blower and has a radius of 12 m when fully inflated.
A longitudinal seam runs the entire length of the ridge
of the structure.
If the longitudinal seam along the ridge tears open
when it is subjected to a tensile load of 100 N/mm of seam,
what is the factor of safety n against tearing when the
internal pressure is 3.5 kPa and the structure is fully
inflated?

7. The strain gauge is placed on the surface of a thinwalled steel boiler as shown. If it is 0.5 in. long, determine
the pressure in the boiler when the gauge elongates
0.2(10-3) in. The boiler has a thickness of 0.5 in. and inner
diameter of 60 in. Also, determine the maximum x, y in-plane
shear strain in the material. Est = 29(103) ksi, nst = 0.3.

8. The strain rosette is attached at the point on the

surface of the pump. Due to the loading, the strain gauges give
a reading of Pa = - 250(10 - 6), Pb = - 300 (10-6), and
Pc = - 200 (10 - 6). Determine (a) the in-plane principal
strains, and (b) the maximum in-plane shear strain. Specify
the orientation of each element that has these states of strain
with respect to the x axis.

10 A tapered cantilever beam AB of length L has

square cross sections and supports a concentrated load P
at the free end (see figure part a). The width and height of
the beam vary linearly from hA at the free end to hB at the
fixed end.
Determine the distance x from the free end A to the
cross section of maximum bending stress if hB 5 3hA.
(a) What is the magnitude max of the maximum
bending stress? What is the ratio of the maximum stress to
the largest stress B at the support?
(b) Repeat part (a) if load P is now applied as a uniform load of intensity q 5 P/L over the entire beam, A is
restrained by a roller support and B is a sliding support
