A Sure Sign Of Spring....

opportunity to see peonies in all their different forms

Brilliant Suspension Bridge Closure

Canadian Pacific has been working with the RDCK
to permit the removal of metal-impacted soils within
the RDCKs lands near the historic Brilliant Suspension
Bridge and Observation Deck. The impacted soils were
identified in this area and appear to be residual from a historic derailment that occurred nearby in the mid-1970s.
The soils have been tested and are non-hazardous. They
will be excavated and removed to the local RDCK landfill.
The work is being carried out by an experienced environmental remedial contractor, Quantum Remediation, and
supervised by local Nelson staff from the environmental
consultant SNC-Lavalin Environment & Water.
The work is expected to occur within a three-week
period starting the end of April 2015. Beginning Monday,
April 27 during active construction, access to the historic
Brilliant Suspension Bridge, the nearby Brilliant Road,
and the Observation Deck will be closed. Access to the
historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge and a portion of the
Brilliant Road will be reopened outside of regular construction hours.

The Grassroots Grammas are about to do it again!
On Saturday, July 18 starting at 9 am, the Winlaw Hall
will be the place to be for Tools and Treasures Two. The
scores of lucky people who attended Tools and Treasures,
the deluxe rummage sale organized by the Slocan Valley Grassroots Grammas three years ago, are still talking
about their new golf clubs, chain saws, casserole dishes,
jewellery, toys, a teak buffet and even a swimming pool.
It was the sale that gave twice: once to the Stephen Lewis
Foundations international Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, and again to the happy local shoppers who
stocked up on good quality items at very affordable prices.
Grassroots Grammas is now seeking donations of items
for the home and the workshop to make for a great Tools
and Treasures Two. Things you have valued, but perhaps
not used for a while (though not books or clothing this
time), will be greatly appreciated. Spring cleaning season
is the time to hound your friends, neighbours, relatives
and co-workers to box up the good stuff for this sale.

Waldo
Waldo is a 1-year-old male
domestic short hair with
an orange tabby coat.
He came to us after his
original owner couldnt
keep him due to the other
resident cat ghting with
him. Waldo then became
a neighbourhood cat. He
was well cared for by a
number of people but is
in need of a more steady
home.
Waldo is full of life,
playful and loves to explore his surroundings. He will be the
rst on the scene to inspect what you are doing and likes to
perch up high to get a good view of his environment. He also
likes being petted and getting some quality cuddle time. Waldo
is okay with other cats and likes playing with dogs, so long as
they are nice to him! He has been an indoor/outdoor cat in
the past and would do well in a home where he has plenty of
space to explore.

Rae Spoon Performs In Nelson
A small crew of Kootenay cyclists is riding for the environment and activism for the second annual tour of the
Kootenay Loop, up the Slocan Valley over to Kaslo and
back to Nelson. All four of us are back for another year,
says John Alton. It looks like some more people will be
joining us, and we invite everyone to ride along, even for
a short stretch.
In the evenings they will gather for dinner or just for
coffee, and discussion of activism, the federal election
and energizing Blockadia. We want to meet up with
local people to talk about the Blockadia movement to
stop pipelines and move to a clean energy future, says
Keith Wiley, of Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free BC. We
also want to talk about the importance of the coming federal election to our future, says Shannon Lanaway. We
want to encourage more people to pay attention and vote.

Transgender performer Rae Spoon will be playing an

intimate show at Expressions Caf, 554 Ward Street, Nelson on Tuesday, May 19. Rae is a songwriter, film score
composer, music producer, multi-instrumentalist and
published author. They will be playing a solo set of music
off of their past five albums spanning genres from folk to
electronic and indie rock.
Rae has toured extensively in Canada, the USA, Europe
and Australia. They have been nominated for the Polaris
Music Prize in both 2009 and 2014, as well as for the CBC
Radio 3 Bucky Awards. They won the Galaxy Rising Star
Award in 2004.
Rae is the subject of the National Film Board musicaldocumentary My Prairie Home, with their 2013 album of
the same name serving as the score and soundtrack to the
film. Directed by Chelsea McMullan, this documentary
about growing up and surviving in an evangelical Christian family premiered at the Vancouver International
Film Festival and was released theatrically in Canada
in 2014. The film was an official selection for Sundance
2014, won Best Documentary from the Vancouver Critics
Circle and was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award
for Best Feature Documentary.

New Resource For Sport And

Physical Activity In The Region
People engaged in sport and physical activity in the
Columbia Basin can look forward to improved support
through the newly formed PacificSport Columbia Basin
Society. Columbia Basin Trust and ViaSport are providing $800,000 and $300,000 respectively toward this initiative over the next three years.
The societys primary goals are to promote sport and
physical activity in the Basin; provide services and programs for local athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers; and promote health by encouraging and helping
the public to participate in physical activities. The Trust

has been working on this since May 2013 to determine

how we can best support sport and physical activity in
the Basin, said Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust President and CEO. Were pleased to partner with ViaSport to
establish the PacificSport Columbia Basin Society. It will
draw on the expertise of the broader provincial alliance to
advance local priorities.
Still in its formative stages, the society will work with
Basin communities and organizations, as well as access
the broader provincial alliance of sports organizations
that serves as a resource hub to educate, inspire and
enable residents to participate, play and perform, no matter their activity or level of expertise.
ViaSports mandate is to increase awareness, opportunity and participation in sport across the province, at
every stage of life and in every community, said Cathy
Priestner Allinger, ViaSport CEO. Working with the
PacificSport Columbia Basin Society and partners in our
Regional Alliance, we are helping to expand the possibilities for all British Columbians. Learn more about ViaSport at viasport.ca
Working on the ground to develop sports and physical activity in the Basin, many Basin residents have been
integral to this process: Being part of this network will
help bring the Kootenays to a more equal playing field
with the rest of the province, improve sport and physical
activity opportunities for all residents, encourage regular
physical activity and physical literacy and improve residents health and wellness levels, said Sandi Lavery, new
Board member and Program Coordinator/Instructor,
University of Victoria East Kootenay Teacher Education
Program at College of the Rockies.
This will benefit people of all ages, from those wishing to have fun and stay fit, to those striving to excel in
their sport, said Janis Neufeld, new Board member and
President, Kootenay Sufferfest Society. Well make better use of the facilities we already have while improving
our ability to attract and retain coaches and support our
volunteers. By having communities work together, we will
help eliminate some of the barriers and boundaries that
this region encounters.

Kettenacker, Cranbrook; Sandi Lavery, Cranbrook; Neil
