Great works performed by the great tenor...I especially liked "La Strada nel
bosco."
All these Italian songs are sung with warmth and proper Italian as only he
can sing it. His voice is beautiful as it was recorded in the 80's worth every
penny
I've loved Domenico Modugno's original, light and jazzy version for years. I
love the romantic words, flying, then dancing in the infinite sky and dancing
then returning to your blue eyes.
When I heard Luciano Pavarotti's version, conducted by Henry Mancini, it
almost about had me flying in the sky with him.
As the greatest tenor, Pavarotti's version is powerful and dramatic and
emotionally charged.
The lyrics are different, "sweet music played only for me", "I think a dream
like this will never return to me again".
He doesn't sing the "returning to your eyes blue as the sky". It's still a
treasure. I feel strong energy whenever I listen to this version.
When he sings "penso che un sogno cosi non ritorni mai piu", it's a sad
prediction sung as only he could.
I join the skeptics when remembering Luciano Pavarotti singing with Bono
and Michael Jackson, He wasn't trained for pop or rock.
This is a very simple, yet extremely alluring Italian song, very popular way
back in the 50's in Italy, The States and more. Perhaps this is the reason
Pavarotti can add new dimension, breath and passion to this romantic
classic.
Sung entirely in Italian, I recommend this to admirers of Luciano Pavarotti.
Even people who care nothing for opera will be won over by the graceful
performances of popular Neapolitan songs on this disk. Many of the tunes, from
the title O Sole Mio to Funiculi Funicula, are part of even non-Italian-descent
American culture, and they are all sung with an easy grace and charm and
gusto. It is easy to forget (!!) that Pavarotti is an international opera star when
listening to this disk; he sounds so natural it's almost as if a good friend (who
happens to have a magnificent voice) were entertaining you after a few glasses
of chianti. By comparison, Mario Lanza's renditions of these songs sound
artificial and mannered. The orchestrations are excellent, too. Pointed, lively,
and well balanced with the soloist. This is an album recorded in Pavarotti's
prime, in the 1970's, before he became one of "The Three Tenors."
Absolutely incredible. Pavarotti is breathtaking!! As he performs these Italian
classic favorites he draws the listener in.. allowing them to feel the emotion
that he feels with each note.
