Jazz Band Process and Procedures

Festival of Winds is delighted to add a Jazz Band to our annual fall event. As with our concert
ensembles, band directors are required to nominate students online via the Festival of Winds
website. Click on the Director Info page to access the links where you can nominate your students.
Deadline for nominations is Friday, October 5, 2012.
NOTE: Videos received by students who were not nominated by their band director will not be
considered for ensemble placement.
Auditions for the Jazz Band are done through video recordings that are uploaded to YouTube. Music
requirements are listed below and directors/students are required to submit ONE complete video
recording per audition. Once a video has been successfully uploaded, directors/students will need to
email us the YouTube link for viewing and adjudication. Deadline for submitting audition videos is
Friday, October 5, 2012.
Audition Requirements:
1. Download the PDF File of Basie-Straight Ahead
2. Download the MP3 File of Basie-Straight Ahead
3. Download the PDF File of Nows The Time OR Billies Bounce
4. Download the MP3 File of Nows The Time OR Billies Bounce
For Basie-Straight Ahead, students are required to play through the melody one time accompanied
by the MP3 recording. For Nows the Time OR Billies Bounce, students are required to play
through the melody two times, improvise for two or four choruses, and finish by playing the melody
again one time through with the appropriate MP3 recording.
Special Notes About Video Recordings and Submissions:
Students must be clearly visible throughout the entire playing of audition material
Students must be accompanied by the MP3 files for both audition pieces
Each audition must be uploaded to YouTube as ONE complete video
Once the video has been successfully uploaded to YouTube, students/directors must email the
YouTube link to our FOW office at fow@usf.edu. These emails must contain the following:
Students Name
Directors Name
School Name
Web Link to Video Recording
An email confirmation will be sent to the band director once a video has been submitted correctly.
Audition results will be emailed to band directors on or before Friday, October 10th. Those students
who are accepted will have up to Friday, October 19th to register and submit payments for the
event.
NOTE: Students may be nominated for both Jazz and Concert ensembles, but can only perform with
one group and must be nominated by their band director under both categories. Those students not
accepted into the Jazz Band may serve as alternates or be placed into one of the concert ensembles.
