Offer to undertake an
assessed Internship with Shell

Once youve successfully submitted your online application youll be

assessment. Were looking to find out more about how your personal
abilities complement your professional qualifications. There are two
parts to this:

After successfully passing the interview and if suitable opportunities

The internship will be assessed. Before you complete the internship
youll have a formal mid-term review. Prior to a final review youll be
asked to complete an online exercise and a written task followed
by a final presentation about your project. Throughout the internship
youll be guided by a mentor and supervisor.

Part 1 is a series of competency-based questions. Once you pass this

part of the assessment youll proceed to the final stage. Well then
contact you to complete Part 2 where youll be assessed on your
decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.

STAGE 3

WHAT WE
LOOK FOR
Whatever role you play within the business, there are certain
qualities you will need in order to succeed.
Right at the top of the list is the ability to enjoy a challenge. We have a habit of taking on
projects that other people think are impossible, such as finding a way to reach disparate
pockets of oil from a single drilling platform. Or designing a gas rig that runs on less power
than it takes to boil a kettle. As individuals, we all bring something unique to the business,
but there are certain key attributes we look for in our people.
At Shell we use a certain method of assessing peoples capabilities, known as CAR. It stands for:

The culture and

support I experienced
through my internship
really reinforced my
decision that Shell is
where I want to be.
Sarah, United States

Capacity

Achievement

Relationship skills

It takes real intellectual, analytical

and creative ability to learn quickly,
identify issues, absorb information,
make judgements and
propose solutions.

We expect plenty of enthusiasm,

resilience and confidence are
you someone who can always get
things done?

We look for rounded characters with

both sensitivity and influencing skills.
Are you able to work effectively with
others in a diverse team?

INTERNSHIP
EVALUATION PROCESS
During your internship a supervisor
and mentor will support you directly.
You will be regularly assessed
throughout your time with us to
ensure you get the most from the
experience and get feedback on
your performance.
Your performance throughout your internship will be
evaluated by a number of people your supervisor,
mentor, business or HR representative assessors.
Pre-final year intern upon completion of a Shell internship,
students who are 12 months from graduating will be evaluated
for full-time employment on our Shell graduate programme.

14

STAGE 1
MID-INTERNSHIP ASSESSMENT

A meeting will take place mid-way through your internship with your
supervisor and mentor. The purpose of this meeting is to review whether
you have met the milestones set at the start of the project, to provide you
with feedback on your performance to date and to give you examples
of where you are doing well and areas for improvement, using the
CAR framework.

STAGE 2
END OF INTERNSHIP ASSESSMENT

A meeting at the end of your internship will take place with

your supervisor and mentor. Its purpose is to formally review your
performance throughout your internship, in relation to the milestones
set at the start of your time with us. You will receive feedback on
your performance.

STAGE 3
PART A ETRAY

Before your internship presentation can take place, you must complete
an online E-tray exercise. Think of it as the digital equivalent of dealing
with a full in-tray: can you absorb information, think quickly and propose
solutions? The E-tray assessment comprises two tasks and takes around
an hour.

STAGE 3
PART B INTERNSHIP PRESENTATION

Youll also be asked to prepare a final presentation about your project.

This presentation is an opportunity for you to summarise your work
during your time with us, share your learnings and highlight your work
achievements throughout your project.

INTERNSHIP
OUTCOME
If the overall evaluation of your internship
meets our employment standards, you
will progress to the next stage of our
recruitment process.
At this point we will seek to identify a suitable employment
position for you, before making you a formal graduate
employment offer.
If the overall evaluation of your internship does not meet our employment
standards, sadly, we wont be able to take things any further. But you will
be able to re-apply to Shell after a period of three years.

Two words I would use

to summarise my experience
on the graduate programme

former interns

A graduate joining Shell needs

to be equipped with a strong
technical base and good
personal skills. It is important
to have a positive attitude and
welcome the opportunity for
continual self improvement
and to always do the best
you can!
Finlay, Australia

The Shell Internship has given

me a truly enjoyable firsthand
look into life as a Chemical
Engineer in an oil refinery. The
challenging hands-on nature
of the internship provided
numerous avenues for learning,
which put my engineering skills
to practice and fuelled my
determination to make a
career in this industry.
Shiau Yinn, Singapore

Shells dynamic working

environment, commitment
to Diversity & Inclusiveness
and a structured graduate
programme makes my work
here more exciting!
Hu Xing, China

Coming into Shell, the one

thing I would advise is never
to be afraid to speak up and
ask questions on things that
you are unsure or curious
about. Questions hardly ever
go unanswered in Shell.
I find that the Shell staff are
always willing to share their
knowledge and experience
with those who are keen and
interested to find out more.
