available at moderate prices, meat not recommended.
Laundry: Available. Reasonable price, average standard.
Crew: Repatriation is reportedly possible, however it takes 3 days to get
an exit visa.
Shore leave is permitted. A special pass has to be obtained to visit
the town. Tours to Tirana by car can be arranged with prior notice.
If ships Master requires gangway watch, ships crew to perform guard
duty.
Port Facilities: Berthing facilities for 10 ocean-going vessels. Sufficient
5 ton shore cranes available. Railway tracks to most quays. Main imports
are coal/coke. Exports are chrome ore. Priority for Albanian vessels.
One floating crane. Lack of mechanisation reduces work rate. Forklift
trucks available, capacity 3.2 tons 32 tons.
Agency: Adtare (private agency) in port area. There are many other
private ships Agents available. The Agents visit vessel twice daily and
speak adequate English and are reasonably helpful.
Fresh Water: Available from barge at $1.50 per ton approx.
Fuel Oil: Heavy oil and diesel oil delivered by road tankers (limited
amounts).
Local Regulations: Permission to immobilise engines must be obtained.
Garbage is collected daily (compulsorily) in plastic sacks. Permission
required prior to de-ballasting.
Watchmen: Not required as gangway guards provided.

APPROACHES: The approach channel is 2 nautical miles long, width
130 m. and has a depth of 7.2 m.
PILOTAGE: Compulsory. Arriving vessels should anchor and await Pilot
in position Lat. 41 15' 08" N., Long. 19 26' E. Pilot available in daylight
hours only.
RESTRICTIONS: Vessels arriving from ports in Yugoslavia, Italy and
Greece must give Notice of Arrival 48 hours in advance. Vessels arriving
from ports in other countries must give Notice of Arrival 5 days in
advance. Notice of Arrival is sent by radio to Adetare Durres with
following information: Vessels name and flag; name of last port; draft
on arrival; cargo description and distribution; particulars of vessels
tonnage and length.
Entrance is through buoyed channel, depth 27 ft.
MAX. SIZE: Controlled by berth depth. Max. draft 28 ft. 6 in.

MEDICAL: Doctor and hospital facilities available.
TANKERS: One oil berth, at the East Mole, depth 23 ft. Tank cleaning
facilities available.
FRESH WATER: Available ex-wharf at all berths.

SHIPMASTERS REPORT: 1979 (Updated 2002).


Navigation: Incoming vessels are to anchor in position Lat. 41 15' N.,
Long. 19 27' E. (2.5 miles from breakwater) and await orders. The
Danger Area shown on B.A. Chart No. 2701 is reportedly non-existent.
Pilot: Equipped with VHF Channel 16, boards at anchorage.
Tugs: Two medium size tugs available for docking. One salvage tug
stationed in port.
Draft: Pilots advised 27 ft. 6 in. max. draft alongside and in approaches.
Cargo Facilities: Loaded 14,000 tonnes of cement in 50 kg. bags from
rail and road trucks. 3 shift system. Used both shore cranes and ships
derricks. As cargo comes from cement factory in interior by rail,
presentation is very intermittent, and vessel rarely informed of working
prospects more than a few hours in advance. Sundays are normally
holidays. Loading rate averaged 1,000 tons approx. per working day but
ranged from 200 tons to 1,700 tons, depending on labour and cargo
availability.
Formalities: ETAs required 5 days and 2 days in advance, also include
length, tonnage, flag, state of health, etc.
Documents required: 6 Crew Lists, 2 Lists of Foreign Currency,
2 Personal Effects Lists, 1 Health Declaration, 3 Stores Lists. Bond is
sealed but Customs will open on request.
Repair Facilities: Small shipyard for minor repairs available.
Surveys: Agents advise that Government Surveyor available for radio
surveys, etc. No Classification Society Surveyor available.
