Introduction to the BOSS Venturi Commissioning Valve

The BOSS Venturi has been developed from proven technology by the Broen Valve Group which has been an ISO registered company since
1991. The BOSS Venturi offers a unique solution to commissioning the modern heating & chilled water system. The concepts incorporated
into the BOSS Venturi provide significant benefits to consultants, contractors and commissioning engineers enabling systems to be
designed, installed and handed over without complications.
The heart of the BOSS Venturi valve is the fixed orifice Venturi which is integrated into all BOSS Venturi commissioning stations. First
demonstrated more than 200 years ago, the principal of the Venturi is to accelerate the water through a waisted orifice which increases the
velocity of the flow and the pressure differential, proportionally amplifying the signal generated. The signal from a Venturi can be increased or
decreased by enlarging or reducing the waisted orifice in relationship to the pipe diameter (Beta Ratio). The benefit of the Venturi over the
traditional orifice plate is that the signal developed is not a direct loss. Significant pressure drop is recovered after the water has passed
through the Venturi nozzle.
The DZR brass BOSS Venturi uses a quarter turn ball valve for isolation and a needle valve for regulation housed with the same body. This
design feature enables the valve to be used for isolation purposes without altering the setting of the regulating needle. In addition to being
easier to regulate and isolate the BOSS Venturi is also easier to install and operate.
All commissioning stations require a certain length of straight pipe line, excluding fittings, upstream of the valve to ensure non-turbulent or
laminar flow. This length varies between five & ten pipe diameters depending on the manufacturers recommended guidelines. E.g. if the valve
is 50mm NB the length of pipe required is between 250 & 500mm. This dimension is increased if the valve is fitted immediately after a pump.
Some commissioning stations also require a downstream straight length.
BOSS Venturi technology means that, except for immediately after a pump, no straight lengths of pipe are required up or downstream of the
valve. This is with the exception of the short pattern steel BOSS Butterfly Venturi valve. BOSS Venturi is easy to use because the unique
design enables it to be installed in any orientation.

Benefits

Comparison Between A Variable Orifice DRV & The BOSS Venturi

Variable Orifice Double Regulating
Vale (VODRV)

BOSS Venturi Fixed Orifice Double

Regulating Valve (FODRV)

Attach the flow meter to the valve. Choose the product type and
Kvs value of the Venturi.
Take the flow measurement and compare with the designed flow
rate.
If the measured flow rate is not the same as the designed flow
rate adjust the valve accordingly.
This is possible because the valve has a fixed orifice and the Kvs
value remains the same irrespective of the setting of the valve.
It is only necessary to measure and adjust once per fixed orifice
valve.
The adjustment of the BOSS Venturi valve is less time
consuming than adjustment of other types of balancing valves.

The adjustment of VODRV is labour intensive.

The index valve is identified through the initial scan.
The valve setting is calculated.
The valve is then set.
A flow reading is taken comparing the actual flow against the
designed flow.
If there is a difference between these two values the setting of the
valve has to be corrected as required.
The measurement is then repeated.
If the measured flow rate is not the same as the designed flow the
above procedure must be repeated.

Conclusion
The BOSS Venturi valve (FODRV) can be regulated without influencing the measurement accuracy. It is difficult to adjust traditional globe
type balancing valves and take flow measurements at the same time because the Kvs value changes with every change in the setting. Where
the globe type valve has a reduced opening the accuracy is poor compared to when the valve is fully open. This accuracy can be between
+/-5% to +/-15% depending upon how far open/closed the valve is. The BOSS Venturi operates at an accuracy level of +/-3%.

Design of the Venturi Groove System

The BOSS Venturi has been designed for installation in any orientation. This feature has been possible due to the creation of two
independent chambers surrounding the Venturi cartridge. Two pilot holes from the high & low pressure sides of the Venturi feed the pressure
differential information into the chambers, on the outside of which are located the test points. The pilot holes from the Venturi to the
measuring chamber are positioned opposite each other. This unique attribute provides the ability to measure the signal even if one hole is
blocked by debris.

Quickset Digital Precision Handle for The BOSS Venturi DN15-DN50

Operation

Valve Identification

To complement the high accuracy of the BOSS Venturi the

Quickset Digital Precision handle is fitted to all DZR brass
commissioning stations (FODRV) and double regulating valves (DRV).
Each valve is capable of being set in any one of 100 positions each
clearly defined. This ensures easy and accurate flow rate settings
even after the application of thermal insulation.

All handles are labelled to identify the:

Size
Kvs value
Venturi cartridge i.e. Ultra Low , Low , Standard or High Flow

To set the regulating spindle an allen key (not supplied) is inserted

through the spindle. This is rotated to increase or decrease the flow.
Due to the unique construction using the integrated ball valve and
separate regulating spindle the BOSS Venturi can be isolated with a
90 rotation of the handle without moving the regulated point. This
feature removes the need for a memory stop.

Design Features
Handle material (Polyamide) PA6.6 30% glass reinforcement

Regulation
Allen key operated (Not supplied)
Two digit set point indication
Number of set points:100

Security
To prevent unauthorised isolation/tampering of the valve the handle
can be wired to the pipe in the open or closed position. Adjustment
to the regulating needle can only be made with an allen key.

Specification
The commissioning station & DRV should incorporate a characterised regulating needle combined with an isolating ball valve. The double
regulating feature should allow the valve to be isolated without movement of the set regulation point. The needle shall be locked in position
using an allen key. The valve shall be suitable for mounting in any orientation.
The flow rate is measured using a fixed orifice Venturi cartridge with double seal test points inserted into the valve body. These functions are
incorporated into a single fitting which contains any up & down stream lengths required for laminar flow conditions except when installed in
close proximity to a pump. The commissioning valve should produce a signal of between 10 60kPa except on the ultra low flow valves
where the signal should be between 1 4.7kPa. The valve is suitable for mounting with the test points pointing down. The commissioning
station has an accuracy of +/-3%.

BOSS Butterfly Venturi Commissioning Valve

FODRV & DRV 65mm 300mm (PN16)
The larger sizes of the BOSS Venturi consist of a gear operated
cast iron butterfly valve fitted with a double regulation feature
mounted on a carbon steel tube fitted with the Venturi device.
These Venturi valves are available with flanged connections in a
long or short pattern. The range covers sizes from 65mm (21/2")
to 300mm (12). This range of valves compliment the DZR brass
offering of Venturi valves and includes within the valve the
upstream lengths which are required for accurate
commissioning.
The flow is calculated based on the pressure differential across
the nozzle. The measurement accuracy is better that +/-3% and
this accuracy is maintained over the entire measuring range from
1kPa to 100kPa.
The BOSS Venturi is available in two variations:
FODRV: Includes regulation, isolation and a flow
measurement unit.
DRV: Includes regulation and isolation unit.

Flow Measurement

The valve is adjusted by rotating the hand wheel on the gearbox.

The water flow increases when the hand wheel is turned anticlockwise and reduces when turned clockwise. By using a flow
meter or other measuring device the flow rate through the BOSS
Venturi can be measured and adjusted to meet the specific
requirements of the system. The gearbox can be locked against the
memory stop when the desired setting is achieved. Once locked the
valve can be isolated and when re-opened cannot travel past the
memory stop.

Flow measurements are via the Venturi nozzle. The BOSS Venturi
has two test points (P/T plugs). The high pressure test point is
identified by the RED retaining clip and the low pressure test point is
identified by the BLUE retaining clip. The pressure differential
measured between these test points can be used to calculate the
actual flow through the Venturi. This differential can be measured
using a flow meter or other measuring device. This is converted into
a flow rate of litres per second (l/s) or metres cubed per hour (m3/h)
either electronically or using a calculation formula.

Isolation

Valve Sizing

The valve is isolated by turning the hand wheel clockwise up to the

S position stamped on the gearbox. After isolation the valve is reopened to the pre-set position when the indicator cam reaches the
memory stop.

For valve sizing please refer to the manufacturers website

BOSS Butterfly Double Regulating Valve (PN16) 65mm 300mm

Regulation/Operation
The valve is adjusted by rotating the hand wheel on the gearbox.
The water flow increases when the hand wheel is turned anticlockwise and reduces when turned clockwise. The gearbox can be
locked against the memory stop when the desired setting is
achieved. Once locked the valve can be isolated and when reopened cannot travel past the memory stop.

Isolation
The valve is isolated by turning the hand wheel clockwise up to the
S position stamped on the gearbox. After isolation the valve is reopened to the pre-set position when the indicator cam reaches the
memory stop.

Valve Sizing
For valve sizing please refer to the manufacturers website
(www.broen.com) or the link on the BSS website (www.bssuk.co.uk).
