Description of the Game


Core Concept:
One$Love,$One$People!is!an!educa*onal!hidden.object!game!(HOG)!with!an!engaging!
narra*ve.!Users!play!as!a!Canadian!tourist!exploring!the!beau*ful!country!of!Jamaica.!
AEer!being!greeted!by!a!cheerful!tour!guide,!an!ambassador!of!the!Jamaica!Tourist!
Boards!Meet$the$People$program,!players!are!led!on!a!cap*va*ng!journey!where!they!
meet!four!unique!characters.!Each!non.player!character!(NPC)!is!a!local!who!will!
introduce!the!user!to!dierent!aspects!of!authen*c!Jamaican!culture.!Players!will!learn!
about!cuisine,!music,!heritage,!and!the!landscape!through!*me!based!hidden.object!
mini!games!tasked!by!NPCs.!Upon!successful!comple*on,!users!will!be!rewarded!with!a!
new!friendship!that!can!be!stored!on!their!heads.up.display!(HUD)!and!clicked!on!at!
any*me!as!a!reminder!of!the!knowledge!they!gained.
Design Consideration and Target Audience:
English.speaking!Canadians!between!the!ages!of!12!to!55!are!our!target!demographic.!
This!segment!accounts!for!the!majority!of!Jamaicas!tourist!popula*on,!making!them!an!
ideal!market!for!raising!awareness!of!the!Meet$the$People!program.!Our!game!is!family!
oriented,!gender!neutral,!and!appropriate!for!almost!all!ages.!Despite!younger!players!
not!having!the!ability!to!travel,!we!hope!that!they!will!excitedly!tell!their!parents!or!
guardians!about!the!game!and!ask!to!vaca*on!there.!Several!design!considera*ons!have !
been!taken!into!account!to!best!reect!these!demographics!and!their!play!habits.!These!
can!be!grouped!into!the!following!sec*ons:
Narrative Style & Structure:

Our!target!audiences!play!habits!reect!their!typically!fast.paced,!occupied!lifestyle.!
They!need!games!that!are!intui*ve,!require!minimal!guidance,!and!can!be!quickly!picked!
up!without!text!instruc*ons!coaching!them!through!the!mo*ons.!The!trend!of!mobile!
games!that!are!playable!on.the.go!is!evidence!of!this!desire.!To!cater!to!these!demands!
One$Love,$One$People!will!involve!a!narra*ve!style!that!concentrates!heavily!on!
voiceovers.!Text!will!be!included!only!to!provide!key!informa*on!such!as!lists!of!items!to!
be!collected!for!a!mini!game.!Sub*tles!will!also!be!present!for!dialogue.!This!auditory!
style!will!allow!players!to!relax!and!do!less!reading.!This!will!be!especially!important!
when!One$Love,$One$People$becomes!available!for!mobile!devices!with!small!screens.!By!
segmen*ng!the!storyline!into!dierent!quests!the!game!can!be!played!in!four!short!
parts.!It!is!the!perfect!pas*me!for!boring!bus!rides!or!wai*ng!for!the!keXle!to!boil.
Language

The!purpose!of!One$Love,$One$People!is!to!educate!casual!gamers!about!Jamaica.!As!
such,!our!group!will!focus!on!craEing!wriXen!and!verbal!content!that!is!palatable!and!
easy!to!understand.!English!will!be!used!as!it!is!the!shared!language!among!Canadian!
and!Jamaican!peoples.!Patois,!Jamaican!colloquialized!English,!will!be!integrated!into!the !
dialogue!to!make!conversa*ons!feel!more!authen*c.

Difficulty of HOGs

HOGs!are!the!main!form!of!play!in!One$Love,$One$People.!They!will!be!designed!with!a!
rela*vely!high!level!of!diculty,!yet!nding!a!balance!between!simplicity!for!younger!
gamers!and!complexity!for!older!ones!will!be!crucial.!By!not!making!the!mini.games!
overly!challenging!players!will!be!able!to!spend!*me!learning!about!the!signicance!of!
the!objects!they!are!collec*ng!and!what!they!represent.!They!will!be!dicult!enough,!
however,!to!require!skill!and!a!keen!eye.!If!tasks!become!too!hard!for!younger!players,!
our!hope!is!that!they!will!ask!their!parents!for!help,!ge\ng!the!whole!family!engaged.
One Love, One Peoples Unique Features
Hidden!Object!games!typically!suer!from!trite!storylines!that!cause!players!to!quickly!
lose!interest.!In!an!eort!to!avoid!this!weve!aXempted!to!structure!an!exploratory!
narra*ve!lled!engaging,!relevant!content!that!simultaneously!entertains!and!educates!
users!about!Jamaican!culture.
One$Love,$One$People$kicks!o!with!an!animated!introduc*on!sequence!that!catches!
players!o!guard!and!sets!the!tone!of!the!game.!
Many!HOGs!feature!blurbs!or!other!summarized!informa*on!about!the!narra*ve,!our!
game!does!not!include!this.!Players!must!directly!interact!with!NPCs!to!discover!the!
storyline.!The!rst!character!users!meet!is!a!cheerful!tour!guide!and!Jamaican!na*ve!
who!drives!players!to!each!loca*on.!Des*na*ons!are!chosen!by!the!player!on!an!
interac*ve!map!while!si\ng!inside!the!car!(eec*vely!the!main!menu).!This!way,!
players!are!given!autonomy!over!the!chronology!of!the!narra*ve.!In!every!city!they!will!
meet!a!local!who!introduces!them!to!either!cuisine,!music,!heritage,!or!the!tropical!
landscape.!By!comple*ng!a!task!for!them!in!the!form!of!a!hidden!object!game!they!can!
earn!their!friendship!and!call!on!them!at!any*me!for!addi*onal!informa*on!by!clicking!
them!in!the!HUD.!This!feature!is!unique!to!our!game.!For!example,!players!may!be!asked!
to!help!Cosmo!gather!ingredients!to!cook!a!tradi*onal!Jamaican!meal!for!a!community!
gathering.!They!can!then!call!on!him!for!more!recipes!or!facts!about!Jamaican!dishes.!All !
mini.games!have!a!*me!limit,!should!the!player!fail,!he!or!she!will!have!to!try!again.!If!
they!succeed,!he!or!she!will!be!able!to!choose!another!des*na*on.
One$Love,$One$People!further!dieren*ates!itself!from!other!HOGs!such!as!Lost$in$the$
City$and!Ruined$House:$Atonement!through!its!unique!character!interac*on!style,!that!
resembles!role!playing!games!like!Mario$&$Luigi:$Superstar$Saga$and!Pokmon$Ruby.!
One$Love,$One$People!incorporates!more!dialogue!than!other!HOGs,!helping!players!to!
form!more!personal!rela*onships!with!NPCs!and!to!develop!an!aXachment!to!Jamaican!
culture.
One$Love,$One$People!also!has!a!connec*on!to!real.world!establishments!such!as!
museums!and!heritage!sites!connected!to!the!Jamaica!Tourist!Board.!Upon!successful!
comple*on!of!the!game!users!will!be!granted!with!discounts!and!coupons!applicable!to!
these!loca*ons.!As!if!players!needed!further!incen*ves!to!visit!this!incredible!country.

Explanation of the Physical Prototype/Storyboard


The!concep*on!of!One$Love,$One$People$has!signicantly!advanced!from!the!ini*al!
storyboards!we!constructed.!AEer!tes*ng!our!original!idea!with!a!physical!prototype,!we!
split!the!gameplay!into!two!components:!narra*ve!and!quest!structure.
Originally,!the!narra*ve!was!based!on!loca*on,!not!NPCs!that!the!player!could!befriend.!
Users!would!choose!a!city!on!the!interac*ve!map!and!meet!a!character.!However,!the!
storyboarding!process!helped!us!realize!that!making!a!personal!connec*on!is!more!
important!for!a!game!that!acts!in!adjunct!to!the!Jamaica!Tourist!Boards!Meet$the$
People!program.!This!simple!altera*on!seems!minimal,!but!the!benets!are!numerous.!
No!longer!are!players!merely!entering!an!environment,!they!are!being!guided!by!
Jamaican!locals!who!oer!them!an!authen*c!cultural!experience.
Another!insight!we!gained!from!the!prototyping!process!was!that!quests!lacked!the!
sense!of!urgency!present!in!most!video!games.!HOG!mini.games!were!structured!so!that!
players!could!progress!at!their!own!pace,!free!of!any!threats!or!limita*ons.!The!main!
problem!with!this!system!is!that!only!the!desire!to!learn!would!keep!players!interested.!
By!incorpora*ng!*me!constraints!players!are!now!challenged!to!engage!with!on.screen!
tasks.!The!possibility!of!failure!adds!another!dimension!to!the!gameplay.!For!those!with!
a!compe**ve!nature,!One$Love,$One$People!prac*cally!dares!players!to!complete!the!
game!as!quickly!and!eciently!as!possible.
