This little handbook of magic purports to derive at least partly from Gypsy (Roma) traditions, and they are cited several
times throughout the text. The earliest dated printing appears to be "Glatz 1788, gedruckt bei Franz Pompejus, knigl.
Stadtbuchdrucker" where the title reads: "Romanus-Bchel. Bewahre / Menschen und Vieh vor Unglck und / Krankheit, Feuer
und Wassergefahr, Diebstahl, / Verwundung durch Waffen aller Art, so wie / vor aller Zauberey in und auer dem Hause." (Johanna
Nickel in S, p. 25.) Some of the charms are also found in EG; Since EG includes errors not found in RB, it is likely that RB is the
older.

starting on a journey, which will save the

Steg und Weg will ich gehen, wo Gott auch gegangen ist und unser
lieber Herr Jesus Christ, und unsere herzliebe Jungfrau mit ihrem
herzlieben Kindlein, mit ihren 7 Ringen, mit ihren wahren Dingen, o
du mein lieber Herr Jesu Christ; ich bin eigen dein, da mich kein
Hund bei, kein Wolf bei, kein Mrder beschleich, beht mich
mein Gott vor dem jhen Tod, ich stehe in Gottes Hand, da bind ich
mich, in Gottes Hand bin ich gebunden durch unseres Herrn Gottes

no murderer secretly approach me: Save me,
oh my God, from sudden death! I am in God's
hands, and there I will bind myself. In God's
hands I am by our Lord Jesus' five wounds,

Virgin Mary was injured by the favor of her

My God and Lord, you mighty judge, I

bid you by your rose-colored blood's sake,
that flowed from your holy sides, and 5 holy
wounds that you protect and shield me N. N.
so that no misfortune comes to me or may
harm me. Christ be near me and with me, J.
before me, J. beside me, J.C. be my head and
protection, in the house and yard, in the forest
and on open field, before all packs of thieves
and murderers, be they visible or invisible,
Christ be my guardian, protection, and shield,
because you Oh Lord, have sanctified your
holy cross with your rose-colored blood.
Christ be with me and protect me all day and
night from all cannons, weapons, and from all
gangs and shameful death. My Lord and God,
I ask and implore you, for the sake of your
innocent death, and for the great torment that
you suffered for me, a miserable sinner, on the
trunk of the holy cross, for you are the Alpha
and Omega, the beginning and the end.
Christ's virtue overcomes all things. Christ will
protect and preserve me, from now on to all
eternity, Amen.
4. For the Scurvy and Sore Throat [H 101].
[4.] So ein Mensch die Mund- und Durchfule hat, so spreche

man nachfolgendes, es hilft gewi.
Job zog ber Land, der hat den Stab in seiner Hand, da
begegnete ihm Gott der Herre, und sprach zu ihm: Job, warum
traurest du so sehr, er sprach: ach Gott, warum soll ich nicht
trauren, mein Schlund und mein Mund will mir abfaulen, da sprach
Gott zu Job: Dort in einem Thal, da fliet ein Brunn, der heilet dir
N. N. dein Schlund und dein Mund, im Namen Gottes des Vaters,
des Sohnes und des heiligen Geistes, Amen.
Dieses sprich 3mal des Morgens und des Abends, und wenn
es heiet (der heilet dir), so blst man dem Kinde 3mal in den
Mund.
[5.] Ein gewisser Feuersegen, so alle Zeit hilft.

Das walt das bittere Leiden und Sterben unsers lieben herrn
Jesu Christi, Feuer und Wind und heie Glut, was du in deiner
elementischen Gewalt hast, ich gebiete dir bei dem Herrn Jesu
Christi, welcher gesprochen hat ber den Wind und das Meer, die
ihm auf's Wort gehorsam gewesen, durch diese gewaltige Worte, die
Jesus gesprochen hat, thue ich dir Feuer befehlen, drohen und

Speak the following, and it will certainly

help you: Job went through the land, holding
his staff close in the hand, when God the Lord
did meet him, and said to him: Job, what art
thou grieved at? Job said: Oh God, why should
I not be sad? My throat and my mouth are
rotting away. Then said the Lord to Job: In
yonder valley there is a well, which will cure
thee, (name), and thy mouth, and thy throat,
in the name of God the Father, the Son and
the Holy Ghost. Amen.
This must be spoken three times in the
morning, and three times in the evening; and
where it reads "which will cure," you must
blow three times in the child's mouth.
5. A Benediction to prevent Fire. [H 121]
"The bitter sorrows and the death of our
dear Lord Jesus Christ shall prevail. Fire, and
wind, and great heat, and all that is within the
power of these elements, I command thee,
through the Lord Jesus Christ, who has
spoken to the winds and the waters, and they

ihm den Magen aus dem Leib, Thue nichts daraus, la bei einander
bleiben, darnach siehe, da du ein Stck aus einem Hemde
bekommst, da ein Mgdlein, die noch eine reine Jungfrau sey, ihre
Zeit innen hat, nimm davon eines Tellers breit, von dem da die Zeit
am meisten darinnen ist, diese zwei Stcke wickle zusammen und
gib wohl Achtung, da du ein Ei bekommst, das am grnen
Donnerstag gelegt worden,m diese 3 Stcke wickle zusammen mit
Wachs, darnach thue es in ein achtmig Hflein, decke es zu und
vergrabe es unter deine Hausschwelle, mit Gottes Hlf, so lang als
ein Stecken am Haus whret, wann es schon vor und hinter deiner
Behausung brenne, so kann das Feuer dir und [5] deinen Kindern
keinen Schaden thun. Es ist mit Gottes Kraft auch ganz gewi und
wahrhaftig. Oder sollte unversehens ein schnelles Feuer
ausbrechen, so siehe zu, da du ein ganz Hemde bekommst, da eine
Magd ihre Zeit innen hat, oder ein Leilachen, da eine Frau ein Kind
darinnen geboren hat, wirf's also zusammen gewickelt
stillschweigend in's Feuer, es hilft ganz gewi.
Take a black chicken in the morning or

evening, cut its head off and throw it upon the
ground; cut its stomach out, yet leave it all
together; then try to get a piece of a shirt
which was worn by a chaste virgin during her
terms, and cut out a piece as large as a
common dish from that part which is bloodiest. These two things wrap up together, then
try to get an egg which was laid on Maundy
Thursday. These three things put together in
wax; then put them in a pot holding eight
quarts, and bury it under the threshhold of
your house, with the aid of God, and as long
as there remains a single stick of your house
together, no conflagration will happen. If
your house should happen to be on fire
already in front and behind, the fire will,
nevertheless, do no injury to you nor to your
children. This is done by the power of God,
and is quite certain and infallible.If fire
should break out unexpectedly, then try to get
a whole shirt in which your servant maid had
her terms, or a sheet on which a child was
born, and throw it into the fire, wrapped up in
a bundle, and without saying any thing. This
will certainly stop it.

verbiete dir meine Pferde und Kuhstall, ich verbiete dir meine
Bettstatt, da du nicht ber mich trste, trste in ein ander Haus,
bis du alle Berg steigest, und alle Zaunstecken zhlest, und ber alle
Wasser steigest, so kommt der liebe Tag wieder in mein Haus, im
Namen Gottes des Vaters, Gottes des Sohnes, und Gottes des
heiligen Geistes, Amen.
[9.] Fr bse Leute in die Stlle zu machen, da sie dem Vieh

nicht zuknnen.
Nimm Wermuth, schwartzen Kmmel, Fnf-Fingerkraut und
Teufelsdreck, von jedem Stck vor 2 Kreuzer, nimm
Saubohnenstroh, die Zusammenkehrung hinter der Stallthr
zusammengefat und ein wenig Salz, alles in ein Bndelein in ein
Loch gethan in die Schwellen, wo das Vieh ein- oder ausgeht, mit
Elzenbumen-holz zugeschlagen, hilft gewi. [6]
[10.] So ein Mensch und Vieh verhext ist, wie ihm zu helfen.
Drei falsch Zungen haben dich geschlossen, drei heil. Zungen
haben fr dich gesprochen, die erste ist Gott der Vater, die andere
ist Gott der Sohn, die dritte ist Gott der heilige Geist, die geben dir
dein Blut und Fleisch, Fried und Muth, Fleisch und Blut ist an dich
gewachsen, an dich geboren, sey an dir verloren, hat dich berritten
ein Mann, so segne dich Gott und der heilige Cyprian, hat dich
berschritten ein Weib, so segne dich Gott und Maria Leib, hat dich
bemhet ein Knecht, so segne ich dich durch Gott und das
Himmelrecht, hat dich gebhret eine Magd oder Dirn, so segne dich
Gott und das Himmelsgestirn, der Himmel ist ob dir, das Erdreich
unter dir, du bist in der Mitten, ich segne dich vor das Verritten,
unser lieber Jesu Christ in seinem bittern Leiden und Sterben trat,
da zitterte alles, was da versprochen die falschen Juden aus Spott
schon zu, wie zittert der Sohn Gottes, als htte er den Ritter, da
sprach unser Herr Christus, den Ritter ich nicht hab, auch den wird
Niemand bekommen, wer mir mein hilft klagen und tragen, den
will ich von Rittern absagen, im Namen Gottes des Vaters, des
Sohnes und des Heiligen Geistes, Amen.
and against Bad Men and Evil Spirits, which

"Trotter Head, I forbid thee my house
and premises, I forbid thee my horse and cow
stable, I forbid thee my bedstead, that thou
mayest not breathe upon me: breathe into
some other house, until thou hast ascended

into my house, in the name of God the Father,

This will certainly protect and free all
persons and animals from witchcraft.
9. To prevent Bad People from getting about
the Cattle. [H 117]
Take wormwood, gith, five-finger weed,
and assafdita; three cents worth of each; the
straw of horse beans, some dirt swept together
behind the door of the stable, and a little salt.
Tie these all up together with a tape, and put
the bundle in a hole about the threshhold over
which your cattle pass in and out, and cover it
well with lignum vit wood. This will
certainly be of use.
10. How to relieve persons or animals after
being bewitched. [H 122]
Three false tongues have bound thee,
three holy tongues have spoken for thee. The
first is God, the Father, the second is God, the
Son, and the third is God, the Holy Ghost.
They will give you blood and flesh, peace and
comfort. Flesh and blood are grown upon
thee, born on thee, and lost on thee. If any
man trample on thee with his horse, God will
bless thee, and the holy Cyprian; has any
woman trampled on thee, God and the body
of Mary shall bless thee; if any servant has
given you trouble, I bless thee through God
and the laws of heaven; if any servant maid or
woman has led you astray, God and the
heavenly constellations shall bless thee.
Heaven is above thee, the earth is beneath
thee, and thou art between. I bless thee
against all tramplings by horses. Our dear
Lord Jesus Christ walked about in his bitter
afflictions and death; and all the false Jews
that had spoken and promised, trembled in
their mockery. Look, now trembleth the Son
of God, as if he had the itch, said the Jews.
And then spake Jesus: I have not the itch, and
no one shall have it. Whoever will assist me to
carry the cross, him will I free from the itch,
in the name of God the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Maul nehmen, vor die Dachtraufe hinausgehen und dreimal
sprechen, darnach dem Vieh eingeben, so wirst dir nicht allein alle
Hexen sehen, sondern es wird auch dem Vieh geholfen werden.

Bete erstlich frh, alsdann kehre das Hemde um, den linken
Ermel zuerst und spricht: Kehr dich um Hemde und du Fieber
wende dich, und nenne den Namen dessen, der das Fieber hat, das

sprach ich das himmlische Kind, so wahr die heiligen 5 Wunden

Sobald als du dich geschnitten oder gehauen, so sprich:

Schreibe die vier Hauptwasser der ganzen Welt, welche aus
dem Paradies flieen, auf einen Zettel, nehmlich Pisahn, Gihon,
Hedekiel und Pheat, und aufgeleget, im ersten Buch Moses des
andern Kapitels, Vers 11, 12, 13, allda du es aufschlagen kannst, es
hilft.

Oder hauche den Patienten dreimal an, bete das Vater unser
bis dahin, auf Erden, und das 3mal, so wird das Blut bald stehen.
[38.] Eine andere, ganz gewisse Blutstellung.

Wann einem das Blut nicht gestehen will, oder eine
Aderwunde ist, so lege den Brief darauf, so stehet das Blut von
Stund an, wer es aber nicht glauben will, der schreibt die
Buchstaben auf ein Messer, und steche ein unvernnftig Thier, es
wird nicht bluten, und wer dieses bei sich trgt, der kann vor allen

schon ausersehen hast, stelle dich mit deinem Gesicht gegen der
Sonnen-Aufgang, und spricht diese Worte: Steck, ich greife dich an
im Namen . Nimm dein Messer in deine Hand [24] und sprich
wiederum: Steck, ich schneide dich im Namen , da du mir
sollest gehorsam seyn, welchen ich prgeln will, wann ich einen
Namen antrete, darnach schneide auf zwei Ort den Stecken etwas
hinweg, damit du kannst diese Worte drauf schreiben, stechen oder
schneiden: Abia obie, tabia, lege einen Kittel auf einen
Scheerhaufen, schlage mit deinem Stecken auf den Kittel, und
nenne des Menschen Namen, welchen du prgeln willt, und schlage
tapfer zu, so wirst du denselben eben so hart treffen, als wenn er
selber darunter wre, und doch viele Meilen Wegs von dem Ort ist.
Vor dem Scheerhaufen thuts auch die Schwelle unter der Thre, so
ein Schfer von Birneck an demselbigen Edelmanne die Probe
