FEASIBILITY OF USING 3D PRINTED SEWING MACHINE PARTS IN

GARMENT MANUFACTURING
Background:

Research Methodology:

Analysis:
Different types of machine parts
and work aids are 3D printed and
tested.
Presser foot single piece type
Following are the major issues

During the manufacturing of a

garment
sometimes
different
attachments are required, and
those attachments are then
ordered.
The
manufacturer
supplies the attachments at very
higher rate and consumes days to
deliver the attachments. But, now
rapidly increasing technology of
3D printing will cuts off the time
and cost required to manufacture
the attachments and spares. 3D
printing is a form of additive
manufacturing technology where a
three dimensional object is
created
by
laying
down
successive layers of material. It is
also known as rapid prototyping,
is a mechanized method whereby
3D objects are quickly made on a
reasonably
sized
machine
connected
to
a
computer
containing blueprints for the
object. The 3D printing concept of
custom manufacturing is exciting
to nearly everyone.

Presser foot hinged type

Area of contact improved by
modifying thickness of heels,
standard presser is maintained,
feed dogs easily catch fabric and
heels can pass through more than
6 layers. Presser foot are tested on
floor and final result

type - tested in floor and final
result
Feed dog single piece type
3d printed feed dogs cannot
withhold the presser during sewing
to feed fabric due to floating
assembly
and
non-supportive
structure and also 3d printers
cannot give sharp edges of teeths.
Feed dog with metal base
type
Adhesive is used to stick printed
strip also thickness cannot be
increased
Needle thread guide Issue: thread cuts off the 3D part.
To resolve this issue, a metal ring is
inserted in between to rectify
problem.
Attachment

issue:
wall
thickness is too less, design is
changed to rectify the issue by
adhering to the standards and
maintaining outer wall thickness.

Identifcation of the customised requirement of the diferent spare parts like presser foot, needle plate and feed dog of diferent sewing machi
Study the chemical and physical properties of the material used to create prototype of the diferent spare parts

Prototyping of the standard and customised spare parts of the sewing machine i.e. presser foot, and folders with the help of 3 dimensional printer

Testing of the proto samples in the sewing machine to check the functionality, durability and aesthetics

Objective:
To study the trends of the apparel
production and requirement of
sewing machine spare parts.

Comparison of the standard metal spare parts with 3D printed parts in terms of cost and time

To identify
the
customised
requirement of the different spare
parts like presser foot, needle
plate and feed dog of different
sewing machines.
To check the feasibility of using 3d
printed sewing machine parts in
garment manufacturing.

Longevity in hours in terms of

deformation is .01mm after 8hours.
This
is
also
maintained
by
adjusting pressure of presser foot
bar.

Conclusion:

Post R&D and testing it is

found that presser foot is
feasible product. Feed dog
may not be possible.
Attachments and customised
thread
guides
may
be
possible with reinforcement.
