PAPER ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE YEAR 2008 SEMESTER 2
PAPER TITLE: Intelligent Systems Engineering
LECTURER(S) :

CODE: 738019

Professor Adnan Al-Anbuky

Notes:
These notes refer to the paper Assessment Schedule on the next page. This schedule shows
the programme of assessment that will apply to your class. The intention of the schedule is to
ensure that you have adequate warning of all assessments that will contribute to your final grade
for the paper. Unforeseen or external factors may force changes to the schedule on occasions.
Such changes will not be made lightly and only after consultation with the class.
Final examinations are held in a timetabled period after classes finish. The Assessment
Schedule shows the period when exams are held, not the specific dates. The timetable for the
examination period will be available towards the end of the programme of teaching.
Routine homework assignments and laboratory work cannot be timetabled with any certainty a
whole year or semester ahead, so dates may not be given in the schedule. Deadlines for these
will be notified when the work is set.
Absence from Assessable Items
If assessable items such as assignments, laboratory or practical work are missed through
unavoidable absence, an alternative equivalent assessment will normally be provided.
Absence from scheduled written tests or laboratory and practical tests must be satisfactorily
explained in a way that meets the aegrotat/compassionate regulations. It is normally expected
that the missed assessment or an equivalent will be completed as soon as possible after the
student's return from absence. No separate warning can be expected for the catch-up
assessment.
Absence from assessments is covered by the aegrotat/compassionate regulations for the
programme of study. All aegrotat/compassionate applications must be made on the form
available from the Faculty of School of Engineering office. It must be completed and returned to
the Faculty Registrar as soon as possible. Applications are considered at the end of the
semester.

Late Submission of Assessable Items

It is expected that items for assessment will be handed in on the specified date. Unless
otherwise indicated on the Assessment Schedule, late submissions will not gain credit. If late
items are accepted the conditions of acceptance are given at the end of this schedule.

Extensions of Submission Dates

Extension of submission dates will be granted only where valid reasons are given. Requests for
extension must be made before the due date. Where the request cannot be made early
because of illness or other cause, the principles of compassionate consideration will apply.
The length of the extension will be related to the time remaining for completion of the
assignment.
Individual Work
All work submitted for assessment must be the individual effort of the student concerned.
Breach of this requirement will result in a zero mark for the assessment and may incur further
penalty through the academic regulations for the programme. In the case of laboratory or
practical work, where apparatus and equipment is shared, results and data are common but
interpretation of these should be reported individually.
Calculator Policy
Where it is permitted to use a calculator in an assessment it must not be used to bring
information into the assessment room. Calculators which can store programs, alphameric
information must be cleared at the start of the assessment. Calculators which can communicate
with other remote devices must not be used.
Retention of Student Work
For the purposes of moderation and quality control of programmes it is necessary that the
School of Engineering retain examples of students work. In most cases this will be by making
copies of a sample of the submitted assessable items of work. In some cases it may be
necessary to retain the original work.
It is strongly recommended that students keep a copy of the work they submit, for security
reasons and for later reference.
Safety
The Health and Safety in Employment Act applies to the University. Its objective is to provide
for the prevention of harm to employees at work. For the purposes of the act students at AUT
are regarded as employees.
All accommodation under the control of the School of Engineering has been evaluated as to the
hazards that it, or the equipment located in the accommodation, presents to the users. Safety
procedures are listed on notices in each room, laboratory or workshop. Special instructions are
given before the accommodation is used for the first time. Students are required to follow the
safety procedures and instruction from the staff. Breach of the safety regulations may result in
exclusion from compulsory practical requirements of papers.

Course Improvement
Auckland University of Technology has a policy that requires evaluation of papers by the enrolled
students. In the School of Engineering this is done by sampling the papers in each programme
on a cyclical basis. Students are encouraged to complete survey forms and provide information
useful for the purpose of improving the delivery of programmes.
