IDAHOT Cambodia 2015

Gay Pride and International Day against Homophobia & Transphobia

(IDAHOT)
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Slogan Voice for the Voiceless Family is like our SKIN & Coming Out is a Right
Problem statement
- We have a lots of report cases from Takmoa, Kandal province, Kampong Chhnang and
Kampong Cham where students who identify as transgender have been bullying their
theirs classesmates while some cases are kicked out of schools by teachers. Eg. Three
transgender female to male in Suramarith High schools had been asked to leave class
because the three students dressed as schoolboys.
- Force marriage and economic pressure leave LGBTI children to be homeless and increase
poverty among them even cannot find a good paid job because they leave school and
home too early. One case in Kandal province where a transgender woman,15, was
rejected by parents and she now moved to Phnom Penh to work in massage place. And
another case a transman,13, has forced to quit school and parents took all phone and
motor as they thought the daughter learn from friends to be transman. While recent three
cases we are handling are forced marriage after parents know their daughters are lesbians
and transman (one case in Sihanuk vill, two in Phnom Penh).
- Legal issues: In end of March transwomen and gay men in Siem Reap were arrested
under drug dealing as the reality, police understand that transwomen and gaymen are
mostly not from Siem Reap as they left home and easy to cheat as the trans and gay
community dont know about laws. They (police) asked for 30-50$/night if the trans and
gaymen want to sit or stand in public spaces.
