Sixth Sunday of Easter

John 15:9-17
"It was not you who chose me, but I
who chose you and appointed you
to go and bear fruit that will
remain." We sometimes tend to
believe the opposite. It's not unusual
for us to think, "I have chosen to be
a Christian," and then to imagine
that the process really started with
us, that it was our initiative, our
decision to believe, our act of faith
that got the ball rolling in our
spiritual life. Of course our decision
is important, but Jesus reminds us
today that he is actually the One
who took the first step. He chose us.
He called and invited us to be
among his followers and friends.

Rev. John Bosco Musinguzi, In Residence

The other part of this equation is

that, as Jesus tells us, we have been
chosen for a mission. This isn't all
just about our personal faith and our
relationship with him. He calls us to
know and love him, and when we
respond, we are appointed to be
fruitful in the world. We are
supposed to live our faith in such a
way that something valuable,
beautiful, and useful comes from it.
Jesus sends us to make the world a
better place. He equips us to bear
fruit that will remain. The work we
do in the world is meant to be the
effect of our response to the call
that Jesus gave us.

Question of the Week

John 15:9-17: Jesus said to the
disciples, "I have told you this so
that my joy may be in you." How
would you describe divine "joy"?

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

The part of the Mass that concluded with the Collect is called
the Introductory Rite. Now we
begin the second part of our
Mass, the Liturgy of the Word. This is the Word
of God found in Sacred Scriptures, the Old and the
New Testaments. Through His Word, God communicates with us and wants us to have a personal
relationship with Him. Because these are messages
from God handed down to man, God wants us to
listen to these readings with attention and devotion. The Second Vatican Council states that when
the Scriptures are proclaimed, Christ himself is
speaking to us.
The first reading is always from the Old Testament except during Easter when it is from the
New Testament. God speaks to us in the First
Reading, and thereafter, we respond to Him with a
Responsorial Psalm. As we are responding directly to Gods Word, the Psalm is called the
Responsorial Psalm. The cantor leads the congregation in singing the response, and the entire
congregation should repeat the response with the
cantor at the beginning and at the end of each
verse of the Psalm. The Second Reading is an excerpt from a New Testament letter by Paul or another writer, which was intended to give guidance
and comfort to an individual or one of the early
churches.
We stand for the Gospel Acclamation which is an
introduction to the Gospel reading. The congrega-

tion, led by the cantor, responds by singing,

Alleluia, which means Praise God. The
Alleluia is replaced by the response, Glory and
Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, during the Lenten season. The reading of the Gospel by the
priest or deacon is the highpoint of the Liturgy of
the Word. It often relates back to the First and
Second Readings. Before proclaiming the Gospel,
the priest or deacon bows towards the Book of the
Gospels and silently prays these words:
Almighty God, cleanse my heart and my lips that
I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel. The
priest or deacon greets the people, and all should
make the sign of the cross on the forehead, the lips
and the chest before the Gospel is proclaimed.
This gesture reminds us that we belong to Jesus in
thought, word, and deed. As the Book of the Gospels is a symbol of Jesus, the priest or deacon who
proclaims the Gospel kisses the Book at the end of
the reading.
The priest or deacon then gives a short homily
highlighting the main points of the readings. The
word homily is Greek for explanation. The
purpose of the homily is to explain the meaning of
the passages in Scripture and then to apply this
message to our daily lives. After the homily, the
congregation stands and recites the Nicene Creed,
which is a profession of our faith and is an opportunity to respond in faith to God who has communicated with us through Scripture. The Liturgy of

the Word concludes with the

Prayer of the Faithful or General Intercessions. In
the Prayer of the Faithful, we respond in some
sense to the word of God that we have received in
faith, and exercising the office of our baptismal
priesthood. We offer prayers to God for the salvation of all. During this prayer, we may offer petitions to God for individual needs and for the needs
of the community. It is referred to as the Prayer of
the Faithful because all our prayers are united and
offered to the Father as a single prayer.
Prophet Jeremiah in Chapter 20 says, His word is
in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones.
Does your heart burn with love for the Lord when
you hear His words?

SANTA SOPHIA ACADEMY

Santa Sophia Academy wishes to thank the many
parishioners who participated in the FUN of our
April Fiesta/Casino Night on April 24 and were
also winners from that event's many raffles and
auctions. Thank you for your support of our Parish
School in so many ways including your ongoing
prayers!
It's that time of year for Santa Sophia Academy's
annual Opportunity Drawing with prizes totaling
$10,000! Ticket are $100.00 each and the odds of 4
in 300 of being a winner can't be beat! There will
be sellers after the masses the weekend of May
16/17 and we hope you will support your parish
school by purchasing a ticket or buying into a syndicate ticket. The drawing for the prizes is on
Wednesday, May 27th, at our annual art show, at
7:45 pm. You do not need to be present to win,
however, you are most welcome to join us that
night and peruse some very fine art and yummy ice
cream.
The successes of a Santa Sophia Academy student
are very apparent as seen recently in the many accomplishments of our soon-to-be graduates. This
is not a one year anomaly or is it just our graduates. All of our students find spiritual, academic,
and responsible and respectful citizenship successes daily as we Seek Wisdom, Live Virtue and Encounter Christ through a stellar, dynamic, and excellent program, teachers, parents and most especially our awesome students. YOUR child should
be part of this superb community!! We would be
honored to give you a tour of your parish school
and set-up your child for these successes through a
placement test and registration for the 2015-2016
school year.
Call today (463-0488) and make an appointment
for a tour! It's not too late or early to be thinking
of fall, 2015 here at Santa Sophia Academy.

Thank you,
Mrs. Karen Laaperi, Principal

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity,

Prayer of Mothers
