Vol. XXIV No. 21

Be Intimate with Jesus...

Pray Always!
I

was riding a PUV the other night, and

seated at my left was a handsome
college student whose loud message
alert tone kept on interrupting my reverie.
And so, curious as to whom he kept on
sending SMS with, I sneaked a peek at what
he was typing and saw his text header in
caps Mahal ko, (my love), ok so he was
texting his girlfriend. And throughout
the ride he was so consumed in his SMS
correspondence with Mahal ko that I
never saw him look up to observe another
gorgeous young lady seated across us. He
was so intimate with this mahal ko that
their distance is bridged and the physical
absence from each other seems to only
add up to their intimacy, it deepens the
relationship and gives meaning and colour
to their young lives .
The word intimate came from the Latin
word INTIMUS meaning inmost.
Whoever remains in me and I in him
will bear much fruit. This Gospel passage
reminds us of the very important element
in our lives as Christians, that of remaining

Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon

in Jesus. We must accept with our hearts
the invitation of Jesus to stay in him to
continue this amazing relationship with
Him, to be intimate with Jesus and to let
Jesus in our INMOST lives.
Our God, most especially, wants us to
be in an intimate relationship with Him. A
relationship with God is by itself a blessing,
a grace. It is actually enough just to be in
a relationship with God, to acknowledge
God as our creator and Lord and to pray
for His blessings, however God wants us
to allow Him to make this relationship
more meaningful and more intimate. As
Christians, our relationship with God
became irreversibly intimate through
Jesus.
It is indeed wonderful and awesome
to know that we can be more intimate with
God, a foretaste of heaven in this world.
To live a life that is pleasing to God in a
wonderful and more meaningful way, a life
that is truly Christian.
However, there are challenges in living
a Christian life. I have always admired my

grandmother; she often would say about

this life as just passing. This earth is
but a temporary home and that life is but
a test and with each good deed and with
each triumph over temptations we create
a wonderful paradise in heaven.
We do live in a most challenging time;
an era of materialism and consumerism.
When we watch the television, listen to
music, read the popular magazines, we
are flooded with information about how to
live a happy earthly life; where to go to be
happy, what to consume to be happy, what
to buy to be happy, what to have to be
happy, what to become to be happy. And
so we want to work more so we can have
more so we can spend more and so we can
be happy more.
But is your pursuit for happiness
making you more Christian? Is your pursuit
for more leading you to be more intimate
with God? Are you not sacrificing your
heaven, for a short time here on earth? Are
turnbearing

your branches growing and
fruit
to glorify God?

ANG MGA SAKRAMENTO SANG BOKASYON KAG PAG-ALAGAD

ari na kita karon sa duha pa

ka nabilin sang Pito ka mga
Sakramento ang ginatawag nga
mga Sakramento sang Bokasyon kag
Pag-Alagad ang Sakramento sang Kasal
kag ang Sakramento sang Pag-orden sa
Pagkapari. Ining duha ka mga Sakramento
nagapahayag sang duha ka lain nga paagi
sa pagkabuhi sang Ebanghelyo ni Kristo
nga nagabantala nga ang matuod nga
kabuhi dira nasandig sa mahigugmaon
nga pagpangalagad sa isa kag isa.
Indi ini pareho sang mga Sakramento
sang Pagpasakop, ukon Sacraments
of
Initiation:
Bunyag,
Kompirma
kag Eukaristiya, kag subong man sa
mga Sakramento sang Pag-ayo, ukon
Sacraments of Healing: Pagpahauli kag
Paghaplas sang lana sa masakiton, ining
duha ka Sakramento ginatawag nga
Sakramento sang Bokasyon, tungod
kay ini nahanungod sa isa ka personal
nga panawagan sang Dios sa pagsabat
sa kinahanglanon sang iban kag sang
Simbahan mismo, kag Sakramento sang

1. Ang Kasal nagikan sa Dios.
Ang kasal indi isa lang ka
pangkatilingban nga bagay ukon isa ka
ideya nga may dala sang balatyagon
pangromansa.
Ang kasal indi isa
ka okasyon sang setimyento ukon
kahigayunan sa pagsinalo-salo. Ang kasal
indi isa ka institusyon nga aton ginhimohimo lang bilang indibidwal, ukon tribu
ukon sosyedad. Ang kasal ginhatag sang
Dios kag halin sa Dios. Ang Bibliya, sa iya
kamunoan, nagapakita nga ang lalaki kag
babayi nagaisa suno sa plano sang Dios.
Ginpamatud-an ini ni Jesukristo, ginabaton
sang sosyedad sang tawo, nagaugyon sa
sentido komun, kag ara sa pangkabilogan
nga eksperyensya sang bug-os nga

katawohan.

Indi ina kasal. Ang duha
ka lalaki ukon babayi nga mag-abyan
wala nagapakighilawas; ginahimo lamang

invite all Christians, everywhere,

at this very moment, to a renewed
personal encounter with Jesus Christ
or at least an openness to letting Him
encounter them.(EG 13)
Ini nga mga pulong ni Pope Francis
nagdala sa akon sa pagpamangkot sa
akon kaugalingon, Ang mga hilikuton
sang parokya nagapatigayon bala sang
encuentro sang mga parokyano sa Dios?
Ang mga parokyano nakabatyag bala sang
presensiya kag paghigugma sang Dios paagi
sa mga hilikuton nga aton ginapatigayon
pa subong sang Easter Pilgrimage? Paano
bala naton mahimo ang mga hilikuton sa
parokya nga mangin isa kapamaagi sang
encounter ukon meeting with the Lord?
Para sa akon, importante gid ining
aton encounter with the Lord: nga
sa aton pagsimba, pagpangamuyo kag
pagtambong sang faith sharing dira sa
aton MKK ukon religious organizations
nga sa diin aton nasugata, nasugilanon
kag natandog gid ang Mahal nga Ginoo
kag ang Iya paghigugma. Nga sa aton
pagpauli pagkatapos simba ukon faith
sharing, spiritually satisfied gid kita kay
ang buhi nga Dios nabatyagan naton sa
personal nga pamaagi, nga nakilala naton
Sia nga padayon nga naga-upod sa aton
sa pihak sang spiritual dryness nga aton

naeksperyensiyahan sa kabuhi.
Ang mga gintuton-an sang aton
Ginoong Jesukristo nangin mapisan kag
matutom nga manugbantala sang Maayong
Balita tungod sang ila personal encounter
with the Lord ilabi na gid pagkatapos nga
Sia nabanhaw. Ang mga santos kag santas
nagkabuhi sing may pagsakripisyo para sa
mga tawo bangud sang ila madalom nga
kaangtanan sa Mahal nga Dios.
Kita man mahimo nga mangin maayo
kag matutom nga mga Kristiano kon ang
aton ihibalo sa Dios wala lamang nasandig
sa aton natun-an kag nabasahan sa mga
libro kundi sa aton mismo personal kag
mahigugmaon nga encuentro sa mahal nga
Dios kag sa Iya paghigugma.
Si Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
nagsiling: We can touch Christs heart
and feel Him touch ours. Only in this
personal relationship with Christ, only in
this encounter with the Risen One do we
really become Christians. And in this way,
our reason opens, the whole of Christs
wisdom opens and all the richness of the
truth. Therefore, let us pray to the Lord to
enlighten us, so that, in our world, He will
grant us the encounter with His presence,
and thus give us a lively faith, an open
heart, and great charity for all, capable of
renewing the world.

Spirit of Youth Encounter

Encounter the Lord and His Love

Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon

DONATIONS UPDATE OF THE PAROCHIAL

HOUSE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

Jerly G. Docdocil

or 13 years I served the Jaro Parish

Youth Ministry as Service Coordinator.
There are a lot of memories I treasure
in my life and one of them is the Youth
Encounter.
It was in 2002, the year that I attended
the Youth Encounter at Saint Vincent Ferrer
Seminary. This four-day formation opened
my heart and mind to the reality of being
with the young. I faced my lifes battle, all
by myself and God who strengthened and
changed me into a new person. My journey
is not that easy but then in the long run,
I realized how narrow or stiff the road I
traversed each day, God showed me that
theres always a better and meaningful way .
Last April 24-27, 2015, the Jaro
Parish Youth Ministry experienced the
Youth Encounter Formation at Asilo de
Molo, Marillac Renewal House. the young
participants experienced their relationship
with God, their family, fellow youth and the
community. There were 20 participants
from different Barangays in Jaro.
Being one of the facilitators, I saw
myself when I was a participant years
ago. Encountering them is not that easy.
However, seeing them struggling from their
past experiences and healed by the love of
God made my heart happy and fulfilled.
CANDLE LIGHT (May 3-9, 2015)

My youth encounter experiences made

me remember that whatever scars or trials
that may come along our way and God will
always be there Who sends light amidst the
darkness. Helping the young people in this
formation is one of my passions because
what I am today, I owe it to the Youth
Encounter. I reached my commitment in
life and most importantly I became a better
person.
To the group Special Elements may
you find what youre looking for! Continue
to inspire other youth, be the first one to love
and keep on praying, remember always the
Spirit of Youth Encounter where ever you
go. We are your Manongs & Manangs are
thankful for meeting all of you with different
personalities. But then our goals for all of
you to become a better person like us. We
will always pray for you. Till we meet again!
Fight a good Fight!

Ang Pulong Nangin Tawo

Ika-5 nga Domingo sang Pagkabanhaw, Mayo 3, 2015
Si Jesus ang Matuod nga Puno sang Ubas

Ako amo ang matuod

nga puno sang ubas, kag
ang akon Amay amo ang
manugtatap. 2Ang tagsa ka
sanga nga yara sa akon nga
wala nagapamunga, ginautod
niya, kag ang tagsa ka sanga
nga nagapamunga, ginatinluan
niya agod magpamunga pa

natinluan na paagi sa mga
pulong nga ginhambal ko sa
inyo. 4Magpabilin kamo sa
akon, kag ako magapabilin sa
akon indi kamo makapamunga,
subong nga ang sanga indi

Ako amo ang puno sang

kay kon wala ako wala kamo
sing may mahimo. 6Ang wala

ang familiar sa teleserye
nga Nathaniel. Isa sa
mga realidad nga ginapakita
amo ang pagkasakon sang tawo

nga ang matuod nga kalipayan
makit-an sa sini nga butang;
nga ang Diyos indi kinahanglan
sa kabuhi tungod kay ang
labing importante amo ang
magmangin manggaranon kag
gamhanan. Kag amo ini ang
kabangdanan sang pagpadala
sang Dios kay Nathaniel, isa
ka bata nga anghel sa isa ka
misyon agud ibalik liwat sa
panghunahuna sang tawo ang
ka-importante sang Diyos sa
kabuhi kag ang pag-alagad sa
isig-katawo.

VISIT OF STO. Nio de CEBU

A replica of the original image of Santo Nio de Cebu

is coming to Jaro Cathedral on May 20, 2015 and will
stay overnight.
This visit of the Santo Nio de Cebu image is in line
with the celebration of the three great and significant
events for the Order of Augustinians in the Philippines:
the 450th anniversary of the Finding of the Image of Santo
Nio de Cebu; the 450 years of Augustinian Presence
in the Philippines; and the 50th year of the Santo Nio
Church as Basilica Minore. The Augustinians are the
pioneers of the systematic Christian evangelization
of the Panay Islands and most of the entire Philippine
archipelago.
Let us come to venerate the Child Jesus!

CANDLE LIGHT(May 3-9, 2015)

St. Joseph, Patron of Workers, Not of Sleepyheads

OLO, Iloilo City, April 27, 2015 St.

Joseph was always on the job even
while asleep.
This is true even as an image of the
saint in deep slumber becomes increasingly
popular among the faithful.
According to Fr. Rey Zerrudo, parish
priest of San Jose Obrero Parish in Molo, Iloilo
City, and professor of Biblical Studies in St.
Joseph Regional Seminary, the image of the
Sleeping St. Joseph should be understood
in the context of the Gospel, particularly,
the episode of the young Josephs moment
of crisis when he discovered that the Virgin
Mary was already with child even before they
started living together.
Well-deserved rest
St. Joseph, an upright man, who never
doubted Marys honor, agonized and, in the
end, made the decision to put away Mary
privately to spare her from public shame and
execution because the punishment dictated
at the time by the law for women found to
be pregnant before marriage was death by
stoning, the priest shared to CBCP News.
At that moment St. Joseph did not yet
know that the child in the womb of the Virgin
Mary was the fruit, not of any man, but of the
Holy Spirit. It was only after making a difficult
but upright decision that St. Joseph slept
soundly. That is what we see in the image of

CBCP News

the Sleeping St. Joseph, the Bible professor

pointed out.
Lest the faithful be misled as to the true
message of the Sleeping St. Joseph, Zerrudo
warned: St. Josephs sleep is the welldeserved rest of a hard-working carpenter. It
is not the sleep of the indolent or of a Juan
Tamad of local lore, who slept under a tree
just to wait for the fruit to fall into his mouth.
Practice of faith
The priest further explained that the rest
of St. Joseph, although well-deserved, was not
a time exclusively for himself. In his sleep, St.
Joseph dreamt and it was in the dream that he
learned of Gods plan of which he acted upon
immediately.
Zerrudo explained that the effectiveness
of St. Joseph, even while asleep, could be
appreciated in Pope Francis practice of
writing a little note and putting it underneath
the image of St. Joseph.
Ever since Pope Francis referred to his
devotion to a sleeping image of St. Joseph,
where he inserts small pieces of paper and
asks the Holy Patriarch to pray for a solution,
on Jan. 16 in his address during the Encounter
with Families at the Mall of Asia Arena, a
devotion to the Sleeping St. Joseph has
spread to many homes and offices among the
Catholic faithful.

Not superstition
Of the practice of writing ones petition
on strips of paper and placing them under
a saints image or in a holy place, the priest
allayed any fear of superstition and assured
that it is a manifestation of authentic Catholic
devotion.
As an example, the Bible professor
recalled that Pope St. John Paul II, in his
pilgrimage to the Holy Land during the Great
Jubilee, visited the Western Wall of the Temple
of Jerusalem, popularly called the Wailing
Wall, and inserted a small piece of paper in
between the stones of the wall. In that piece of
paper the Holy Pope wrote a prayer asking for
forgiveness and for a renewed commitment
for genuine brotherhood with the people of
the covenant.
Prayer can be made in many ways. One
way is to write it on pieces of paper, the priest
explained.

Tagle, Villegas to keynote 2nd Marriage Encounter Congress

ANILA, April 26, 2015 - Manila

Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal
Tagle
and
Catholic
Bishops
Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)
president Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas will
address nearly a thousand delegates, faithbased groups representatives, academicians,
social scientists and concerned citizens during
the 2nd Marriage Encounter Foundation of the
Philippines (MEFP) National Congress on July
25 at the Century Park Hotel, Manila.
Villegas, who also heads the Archdiocese
of Lingayen Dagupan, will speak at 10:00
a.m. on Proclaiming the Gospel of the Family
Today in Various Contexts, while Tagle is
expected to provide insights on measures to
further enrich and strengthen the Filipino
family. He will speak after the roundtable
discussion and summary of the seven topics
shortly before 6:00 p.m.
He will also preside over the concelebrated
Mass.
Synod-inspired
MEFP President couple Robert and Tinette
Aventajado, in an interview with CBCP News,
said the whole day event has The Gospel of
the Family Today as its theme, which is taken
from the Lineamenta of the forthcoming Synod
on the Family.
We hope to formulate motions for
the coming Synod of Bishops scheduled at
the Vatican from October 4 25, 2015, the
Aventajado couple said. They added the

CANDLE LIGHT(May 3-9, 2015)

Congress will provide a venue for common

study and reflection on a number of pastoral
issues affecting Filipino families today.
They also hope to formulate marital
and family enrichment programs that can be
implemented by faith-based groups across the
country.
Relevant topics
The Aventajado couple said there will be
four simultaneous topics up for discussions in
the morning:
Pastoral Care for Couples Civilly
Married or Living Together with Fr.
Dominador G. Guzman, Jr., Ssp;
Caring for Wounded Families
(Separated, Divorced and not Remarried,
Divorced and Remarried and Single-Parent
Families) with Loyola School of Theology
Professor Rex M. Mananzan, SJ;
Pastoral Attention towards Persons
with Homosexual Tendencies with Courage
Philippines Spiritual Director Fr. Daniel Healy;
and
The Transmission of Life and
the Challenge of Declining Birthrate to
be discussed by Mitos Rivera, executive
director of Institute for Reproductive Health
Philippines.
During the afternoon session, there will
be three different but equally-important
topics which include Guiding Engaged
Couples in their Preparation for Marriage
to be discussed by Fr. Benito B. Tuazon,

MEFP National Spiritual Director and

Accompanying Married Couples in the Initial
Years of Marriage with MEFP founder, Fr.
Ruben M. Tanseco, SJ.
Caritas Manilas executive director and
Radio Veritas President Fr. Anton C. T. Pascual
will discuss Upbringing and the Role of the
Family in Evangelization.
Early bird registration
The event comes a couple of months
before the XIV Ordinary General Assembly
(Synod of Bishops) on issues and concerns
about the family.
The speakers presentation will be sent
to confirmed delegates before the Congress to
allow them to study and formulate questions
or even write their own position papers, which
may be submitted during the whole-day event.
A minimal fee of Php 2,600 will be charged
per delegate and is inclusive of Congress
materials, meals and fellowship. For early bird
registrants, a 50% discount will be extended
to MEFP members, while a 20% discount will
be given non-MEFP members.
The Aventajado couple further said a
special fee arrangement will be extended
to a limited number of qualified delegates.
Everyone should register and pay on or before
June 25, 2015 to avail of the discounts.

Time to Unite!

Pureza D. Lacuesta

hese are the times that try mens

souls! How correct are these
lines of Sir Patrick Henry.
From home to church to educational
institutions to government offices to
community, we need to observe protocol
and use our senses positively if we want
peace and unity.
Since the home is the foundation of
values, the elders must use everything
they can do to make the children and
all other underlings, to be subject to
authority, provided there is love, justice,
and equality. These must never be a show
of favoritism and injustice. Prayer must be
given a prominent place. The rosary, the
Angelus, and all other devotions must be
practiced by all the members.
In church, proper way of dressing
and behavior must be strictly observed.
There are some of us who cannot avoid
conversing with one another even while
the Mass is going on. We must understand
and must never forget that the church is
the house of God, and the presence of the
Blessed Sacrament is enough to remind
us that we are with the Lord. Can we not
hold our tongue and be discreet in our
movements? Can we not listen to the
priest and reflect on his words? We must
be grateful that during the Mass, we are
with Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Love,

respect, obedience, and decent dressing

and behavior are not so difficult to offer to
God.
Presently, our educational institutions
are trying hard to develop our students
mentally and physically. From reading, to
writing, to oral speech, to outdoor games,
to academic and musical competitions, to
sports, our children undergo trainings and
experience.
Our government, in its desire to
improve us economically, is doing all
means to pop up organizations which do
their utmost to improve commerce and
trade. Other institutions offer trainings for
those who desire to go abroad.
Each one of us is a part of a community.
Let us be helpful and friendly with our
neighbors, and try to create a relationship
that can withstand the test of time.
Today, many social problems are
disturbing us. Drug addiction, heavy
drinking, heavy smoking, careless driving,
dishonesty and lawless competitions plus
robbery and bag snatching are common
social disturbances.
Executions and jails are now common
news. However, we must not despair.
There is one solution that can make us
brave in the face of danger and be calm in
the time of trials.
This is the time to turn to God be

on our knees open our heart and lift our

eyes and hands to Him in prayer. He sees
and He understands. Let us not rely on
intuitions or announcements. Let us rely
on prayers. Let us ask the guidance of the
Holy Spirit on where to go and what to do.
We can pray anywhere at all times in
all places. We do not need to kneel all the
time. We can pray while riding on a vehicle
while walking down the streets, even
while shopping. Let us be familiar with the
occupants of the kingdom of heaven, make
friends with them, pray to them, and trust
in their love and guidance.
Unite! Hold hands! Pray! See you at
the cathedral on Sunday! Amen? Amen!
