'SID10'
(Safer Internet Day 2010)

After a week long campaign at Holmfirth High School, here are the results, taken during
assemblies every day throughout the week.
The main point or aim of the assemblies provided to all students (1300) at Holmfirth
High School was to raise awareness of behaviour, actions and consequences which could
result by using social network sites. The theme for this years SID10 is called "Think
before you post".
In line with CEOP's resources content and information was given to our students which
alerted them to bare facts about the use of online social network sites. Typically these
facts are:
• The internet is used daily by over 75% of the UK population = A lot of people
online.
• The forecast for online users is set to increase year on year by approximately 1
million users per year.
• The most used and popular social network site in the UK (as of September 2009)
is Facebook.
• The most used social network site by our students is Facebook.
• Facebook is used most, by users in the age range between 20 - 40.
• Facebook is used most by people in the north of the UK.
• Employee's are active in using social network sites to screen candidates before
being invited to interview. In 53% of cases where employees used social network
sites to screen candidates prior to interview 43% decided not to employ due to
direct behaviours found on social network sites.
• Some employees are now using social network sites to source potential future
work force. Reasons for approaching individuals found on social network sites
are:
◦ Good communication skills
◦ Positive characters
◦ Examples of creativeness
• Universities are taking disciplinary action against students that are found to have
undesirable content posted on social network sites.
• A leading school in London, recently suspended 29 pupils, for posting a comment
about a teacher.
Throughout the assemblies the students were asked questions in relation to their online
activity and behaviour. These questions and the results can be found below:
