The 2015 Carnival Queen is Charlotte Crane

(Above) and Senior Attendant (Above Right)
Sophie Bernard-Smith with Senior Attendant
Dannielle Dawson (On Right).
Even though the turnout for the Carnival Queen
and her attendants was not as good this year,
3 very lovely girls set out with the ambition
to be the Cromer Carnivals Queen.
It was a shame that they couldnt all be chosen
as Carnival Queen, however as there were
only three entrants, the sponsors kindly
agreed to have two senior attendants so
all the girls got what they deserved.

From The Editor

I love living here and enjoy all that

our local countryside has to offer,
but, last week I was informed of a
practice by our local gamekeepers
which is understandable, legal with
a licence, but distressing.
The gamekeepers hang cages in the
trees to entice in carrion (which prey
on the young pheasant chicks) then
they despatch them!
I understand that young pheasants
are raised, fed and then offered to
those paying to shoot them!
I realise that it would be good if
the carrion were reduced but not
eradicated, a local friend has lost
all sixteen jackdaws which have
used her chimneys as home for
the past fourteen years.
On a much more joyous note it was
good to hear that Norman Lamb has
retained his seat in North Norfolk.
I and many throughout this area
know him to be an absolutely
wonderful, effective MP with
a great team helping him to
help the local community.
My heartiest congratulations
Norman, keep up the great
work here and nationally.

On page 12, we have a listing of the

newly elected NNDC Councillors in
the Crab Tales area, Philip and Lis
went with Paul Damen to the Count
which took all night before results
were declared at 7.30am.
Thank you so much Paul for taking
such interesting photographs.

Enjoy Your Crab Tales

Dear Liz,

Please can I through your great magazine thank

all those who visited the Trimingham church
Art exhibition between 24th and 26th April.
Thank you to local artist, Keith Nash, and to
Joanna OBrien, Wendy Fredericksburg and
Woodland Holiday Park who donated raffle
prizes and to Seaside Harmonies and local
musician Bill Rowlands who provided live
music, for the preview evening resulting
in many paintings being sold.
There was a constant stream of visitors over
the Saturday and Sunday, overall eighteen
paintings and one sculpture were sold.
The refreshments in the Pilgrim Shelter were
enjoyed by a great many visitors. This super
event, which we will repeat next spring,
resulted in 308.74 profit for the Church.
Local artists please note and let us
know if you wish to exhibit.
Thank you

Dear Editor,

As part of the national Cherishing Churchyards

week, St Margarets Church Thorpe Market
will be hosting a wildflower identification
day on Saturday 13th June 2015, starting
at 10am. and ending at 1pm.

The churchyard is noted for its richness in

terms of the diversity of plant species.
This event is being organised by Norfolk Wildlife
Trust, who run a Churchyard Conservation Scheme.
They provide free plant surveys and advice to
churches on how to manage their churchyards
for wildflowers and other wildlife.
The workshop will be led by local botanist, Chris
Roberts, who spends her working life surveying
& recording in woodlands, grasslands, by rivers
and ditches, as well as in churchyards.
She asks that those attending the workshop bring
along a notebook, pencil, and a hand lens or
magnifying glass if they have one.
This event would be of particular interest to those
who are involved in the management of their
churchyard and are interested in learning
more about wildflower identification.
This is not a condition of attendance. No previous
botanical knowledge is assumed.
Places are strictly limited & must be pre-booked.
There is no charge. Car park is available and
all facilities.
Reservations please to Geoffrey Hunter
e-mail: info@thorpemarket.org.uk
or phone: 07980 695 385.

Dear Editor,

Recent issues of the Crab Tales seem to have

got swallowed up by everyone thanking
everyone else who need thanking.
So it was very pleasant, if not to say entertaining,
when Mr Philip Grahams wife, whatever her
name is, was reported to make a joke.
Mrs W Mouse giggled so much she had tears
running down her legs.
So lets once and for all say a huge Thank
You to everyone and get it over with.
I mean where have the entertaining letters gone?
Whatever has happened to the nasty Lady in
the Floral Dress from the Pilgrim Shelter
who doesnt like mice?
Where are the people pretending to write as
Janet Munro? What about those ridiculous
people who write as if they are dogs or cats
and other despicable animals. (Naturally
something I would never do.)
Squeak to you soon.
Mr H Mouse.

Dear Editor,

A sky-high record 747 people responded to the

newly-formed Friends of North Lodge Park
questionnaire on the future of the Park.
Friends chairman Tony Knight commented:
This response, greater than for all previous
surveys, shows what a passion people in Cromer
have for the Park, and the many comments
& suggestions reveal real affection for the
quintessential nature of this seaside park.
About 2/3rds of responses were made online,
with 24% of the respondents aged under 40,
32% between 41 & 60, and 44% over 60.
The overwhelming view was that the special
character of the Park as a beautiful, peaceful

green space in the heart of Cromer should be

safeguarded and everything must be in keeping
with this. Many respondents had fond memories
of the Park and how it provides an oasis of calm,
particularly when the town is busy. The lawns
& flower beds are seen as an important asset
to Cromer. Maintaining this special character
was the most frequently mentioned wish.
There was also strong support for more dedicated
areas such as a play area for children, and support
for more activities and events, putting, and for
private events to raise funds for the Park.
One of the strongest wishes was for the caf to
be open as soon as possible. This is seen as the
most important facility, with requests for it to
be open in the evening and all-year-round as
a community focal point which could attract
many more visitors, adds Tony Knight.
There are areas where immediate improvements
are required, such as the concrete area and
old bandstand building by the main entrance.
Barry Meadows

Dear Liz,

May we through the Crab Tales, say that the

recent coffee morning for MS at Southrepps
church made 418.70.
A big thank you to all who, donated,
helped and spent.
Mandy and Hazel

Messenger
The man whispered, God, speak to me,
And the meadow lark sang,
The man did not hear.
So the man yelled, God speak to me,
And the thunder rolled across the sky,
But the man did not listen.
The man looked around and said,
God let me see you and a star shone brightly,
But the man did not notice.
And the man shouted,
God show me a miracle,
And a life was born but the man did not know.
So the man cried out in despair,
Touch me God and let me know you are here,
Whereupon God reached down and touched
the man,
But the man brushed the butterfly away,
And walked away unknowingly.....

Thanks to Ray Baker for this.

What A Turn Out

There was an EXTREMELY big turnout for

Carnival Prince & Princess this year, with 32
girls between the ages of 7-11 entering along
with 8 entrants for the Prince.
There was the most fantastic atmosphere felt by

Norfolk Vs. Napoleon

As we celebrate the anniversary of the Battle

of Waterloo this year, we should remember
that during the Napoleonic wars there was
always the fear that England would be
invaded by the French.
Along this coast there were mustered
volunteers, mainly fishermen, ready
to defend their homes and their country.
These were known as the Sea Fencibles and
they were commanded by naval officers
seconded from their normal duties and
receiving full pay. The fishermen were
paid one shilling a day.
In Cromer the Captain of the fencibles was
W.H.B.Tremlett RN and he commanded a
Petty Officer and 35 men.
William Henry Brown Tremlett was born into
a naval family in 1777 and starting as a Midshipman he rose through great bravery and skill to
command his own ships.
One of his many battles was in 1798 when he
was a Lieutenant on The Lion, a 64-gun ship,
operating in the Mediterranean.
Captain Tremlett assisted in the capture of
the Santa Dorothea, a Spanish frigate of 42guns and 370 men. (this engagement
is illustrated above).
For his many achievements he was advanced to
the rank of Commander on 1st January 1801.
His next appointment was to command the Sea
Fencibles at Cromer. Several incidents are
recorded including an incident on 26th April
1804 when the Cromer Sea Fencibles embarked
on Board the Welcome Messenger Smack in
pursuit of a French Privateer
It does not seem that the French ship was caught

and owner of the smack had to be compensated

for a broken mast (6s) and a broken oar (5s).
In June 1804 Captain Tremlett met with a serious
accident in Cromer whilst exercising the corps
at the great guns.
A grape shot, weighing eight ounces, entered his
right foot, forcing part of the boot into it, and
where it remained for two and a half years
before it could be removed.
The grape shot also shattered the leg of Mr John
Smith, surgeon of Cromer so as to render
immediate amputation necessary.
Despite his injury Captain Tremlett was able to
resume active service and he destroyed upwards
of fifty sails of the enemys vessels on various
parts of the coast.

A Curious Race
In March 1815 a curious race took place
in Chapel Field, Norwich.
The competitors were Thomas Jenner
and William Palmer, two men with
two wooden legs each.
The wager of 1 was won by the former.

promising to protect each from the other.

is too serious a matter to be
left to the politicians.

Cromer West
Promenade

Draft designs have been unveiled for the revitalisation of the Cromer West Promenade which
sustained significant damage during the
2013 tidal surge.
Stakeholders gathered to hear the proposals and
view visuals being brought forward. The aim
is to provide a long-term master plan for the
holistic improvement of the west promenade
to make it a vibrant and popular destination
throughout the year.
Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive at NNDC, said:
Cromer West Promenade provides an excellent
platform to enhance visitors experience and for
locals to enjoy. It will also encourage the use
of the better bathing beaches to the west of
the pier and the beautiful vistas towards the
wilder shore and cliff lines towards the west

and to strengthen the access and gateway to the

town from the large Runton Road car park.
The proposed design takes into account many of
the suggestions put forward from stakeholders
including; improved caf facility, a fishery
activity centre with educational and play
equipment, pop-up stalls, small auditorium
area for entertainment or demonstrations, A
Cromer fishing/ heritage trail (to be extended
into the Town), exhibition space, improved
lighting, improved toilets & more beach huts.
There are also discussions ongoing with the
COAST arts group regarding supporting bids
to obtain funding for a major art installation.
After viewing the initial designs stakeholders
were generally positive and the feedback given
is now being looked at including options for
a Fishing heritage centre/area and the use of
lighting as an attraction as well as a necessity.

Volunteers were sought to take forward two main

streams of the project looking at the detail of the
Heritage/Information Trail and the family
facilities, play and education elements.
These will meet over the next few months to take
these elements forward. The roll out of the design
will be phased to take into account current
funds and initial service needs.
Additional features will be installed as and when
funding comes available but it is hoped that the
provision of a master plan will make applications
for future funding easier and more successful.

Marlenes School Of Dance

Presents Lets Dance

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Available from Jarrolds.
Review by Sally Dillon-Snape

The action unfolded on the stage as Marlenes

150 dancers aged 3 - 19yrs, began to perform
a diverse evening of dance, commencing with
a rock upbeat number, a mix of classical and
street, part shiny outfits, part shorts and vest
top gear, created & designed by Sue Chatting.
The music & songs from Frozen were portrayed
mostly in ballet with elegant sparkly costumes
and the audience were especially pleased with
the Reindeer and his ribbons of little followers.
The Snowman routine was bouncy & lively and
how about those Stilt Walkers - Very clever.
The Queen tribute was tremendously visual,
the accompanying dance routines to the songs
i.e. Another One Bites The Dust... were
really well choreographed.

The 2nd half of the show, devoted to Swing &

Street type dance and Fast Tempo was danced
to perfection, with waves of different routines,
copious changes of costumes, a great feel for
the music and impeccable timing.
How did the team manage to learn that little
lot! ALL must have devoted many hours of
their time to create such artistry.
The versatile and beautiful My Bad Sister
babes, with their infectious energy, were
really delightful.
This was a superb production with a fabulous
finale - Trumphant. You did us proud Marlene.
You sure did Let It Go

This book is a real tearjerker. Prepare to use

lots of tissues.
Louisa Clark is heartbroken when she loses her
job at her beloved caf and her current boyfriend
brings no joy into her life. She wanders into Job
Centres without success until she is offered a
6-month contract as a companion to quadriplegic.
Will Traynor is a former adrenaline junkie and
City worker whose life has been ruined in a road
crash. He has given up on life but Louisa is
determined to change his mind except Will
is only frustrated by her efforts.
A nascent love begins between the two polar
opposites, she dressing colourfully as her only
limited adventure, whereas Will wants only to die.
There is no obviousness in the novel, the plot
cannot be guessed; Will becomes extremely
ill but recovers and does not want to visit his
favourite Parisian restaurant.
Louisa struggles to keep his mind on living as
she falls more and more in love with him.
The ending will have you reaching for a box of
tissues because this in a very well written book
by a professional journalist of some standing.

Staying Healthy
On Your Travels
A travel risk assessment & travel vaccinations
are an essential part of holiday planning,
particularly if your journey takes you to an
exotic destination or off the beaten track.
The rise in worldwide and adventurous tourism
has seen a massive increase in people travelling
to far flung destinations. This leads to exposure
to diseases that dont, or are less likely to, occur
at home. These are diseases against which we
have no natural immunity, and against which
we are not routinely immunised in the UK.
Illnesses such as hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies and
malaria might not only spoil your holiday but
might pose a threat to your life.
Before travelling outside the UK it is important
to check whether you require any vaccinations to
protect you. Vaccination courses need to be planned
well in advance as some involve a course of
injections at specified time intervals and some
vaccinations cant be given together.
Travel advice and vaccination can be accessed at
most GP surgeries and at specialist travel clinics.
At Mundesley Medical Centre we offer comprehensive travel advice and a full range of travel
vaccinations (apart from yellow fever vaccine
which is administered at designated yellow
fever vaccination centres).
We ask you to complete a travel questionnaire at
least 8 weeks before your intended departure date.
This form includes questions about your trip and
about your medical and vaccination history.
If you arrange travel with some spontaneity or
overlook seeking travel advice and it is less than
8 weeks until your date of departure it may be
advisable to go to a specialist travel clinic as
your GP surgery may not be able to arrange
everything on time.
A practice nurse with training in travel medicine
will check your vaccination history and the up
to date requirements for your travel destination
and then you will be contacted to advise you if
you require an appointment or not.
An appointment will be booked if required and
you will be asked to pay for any vaccination
charges in advance.
GP surgeries have a range of travel vaccines in
stock but do order some vaccines on a patient
specific basis which can take at least a week
to arrive.
The NHS does not usually cover travellers for
vaccinations relating to exotic travel, although
some travel vaccines, such as hepatitis A, are
free nonetheless. Whilst this may seem expensive,
it is usually a small sum relative to the costs of
your travel, and safe-guarding your health should
be considered an essential part of any trip.
The protection offered by vaccinations may not
always be 100% but will greatly reduce your
chances of acquiring the disease, and in many
cases the protection level is extremely high.
You will be advised about booster vaccines,
but protection will usually last well beyond
the duration of your proposed holiday and
make it a safer one.
There are many other steps you can take to
reduce your exposure to disease. You should
think of vaccination as an important part of
your protection, but not the only part.
There isnt a vaccine available for every disease
and even where a vaccine is available, vaccination
should not be all you rely on to protect yourself.

14

Being aware of risks and taking sensible steps to

avoid them is the most important thing you can do.
For example, precautions around eating and
drinking will go a long way to protect your
health when on holiday and help avoid
travellers diarrhoea.

A good sun cream

and protecting your
skin from harmful
sun rays is very
important.
Protecting yourself
against insect bites
with suitable clothing
and repellents is an
important part of
avoiding insectborne diseases
such as dengue
fever & malaria.
No vaccination is available against dengue fever
or malaria. People who live in malarial zones
have partial malaria protection, but this is lost
if they move away.
Protection against malaria is through a combination of avoidance of mosquito bites and the use
of anti-malaria tablets. Tablets have to be started
before you enter a malarial area and continued
for some days or weeks after leaving it.
The recommended tablet regime varies by area
and your practice nurse will have access to up-todate advice on recommendations for your journey.
A private prescription for the appropriate malaria
prophylaxis will be generated following
discussion and your informed choice.
Dont forget to order any repeat prescription
medication in good time. If you need regular
medication for a stable long-term condition,
your GP can prescribe a maximum supply of
3 months. If you are going abroad for more
than 3 months you will need to make arrangements to get it at your destination, this might
be by registering with a doctor in the country
you are visiting or buying the medication
from a pharmacist while youre away.
Some GPs will provide private prescriptions if
they agree that you should take medication with
you in case youre ill (an infection for example)
while you are away. You will have to pay for
the private prescription.
Please ensure you have comprehensive travel
insurance suitable for your holiday.
Have a wonderful trip!

Fire & Rescue Service Dogs

18

Norfolks Fire and Rescue Service

dogs have had a busy few months
providing essential support for
the Service as well as Norfolk
Constabulary.
Paolo, a black and white Springer
Spaniel, now fully trained and has
been operational since July 2014.
He joined the Service as their 2nd
search dog within the Urban
Search and Rescue Team.
The 2year old, whose official title is
Forensic Evidence & Victim Search
Dog, is mainly used to locate high
risk missing people and with other
recovery work and is specialised in
blood detection & searches for bodies
in and out of water. He is the only
specialised Fire & Rescue Service
dog of his kind in the UK.
The majority of incidents Paolo has
attended have been in Norfolk, but
his specialist canine skills have also
been used in Hertfordshire. Paolo is
used along with Hooky, a 7 year old
black Labrador, who joined Norfolk
Fire and Rescue Service in 2010.
Ben, the current Fire Investigation
Dog, attends incidents where he
is used to detect potential arson.
The seven year old black Cocker
Spaniel has been with the Service
since June 2012.
Paolo and Ben have attended 19
incidents since last July including
several outside of the county.
Jackson, a 1yr. old black Labrador,
has started formal training to be the
Services 2nd Fire Investigation Dog.

It is hoped that Jackson will be

qualified in August this year.
He will then work alongside Ben to
help investigate fires by detecting
accelerant which may have been
used in cases of arson.
Paolos handler Steve Polley said:
Paolo has been excellent and is
certainly a dog you can rely on.
Since completing his training, he
has been called upon to attend a
number of real-life incidents and
his enthusiasm for work continues.
All of the dogs are a huge asset to
the Fire & Rescue Service and the
police, working closely with our
dive team. They are being called
upon more and more. One recent
incident involved 4 consecutive
days of search and rescue.
Bens handler Peter Abbs said:
Ben continues to be a valuable
member of the Fire Investigation
Team within Norfolk.
His ability to quickly search a fire
scene and determine whether any
traces of accelerant liquid is present
speeds up the investigation process
and enables more accurate samples
being sent off for analysis.
Without doubt, if an ignitable fluid
is used to start a fire, the chances
of being caught have increased
dramatically since Ben became
a member of the fire & rescue
investigation team.
Norfolk is the only Fire and Rescue
Service in the East of England to
have an operational dog unit.

What Were You Doing....

............on Saturday the 2nd of May?

Well, over 30 ladies from 44 to 91yrs.-yes 91!!

travelled to London to dance at The Royal Albert
Hall in an international celebration of the 85 years
history of The Fitness League (previously
known as The League of Health & Beauty)
All the ladies, pictured above, belong to the local
classes run by Annamarie, in centre.
Fitness League classes combine movement with a
strong central core & body strengthening exercises.
Our focus is on developing good posture and
correct body alignment, and lengthening and
strengthening muscle groups to encourage
full range of movement.
You then become more body aware, feel taller,
stronger and more mobile. The classes are
suitable for participants of all abilities, ages
and shapes, and are taught to music in a fun
and friendly environment.
These Bagot Stack classes provide a complete
body exercise. No previous dance or exercise
experience is needed. Of course, nowadays
many other forms of exercise are available
& women have many more lifestyle choices.

The difference with Fitness League

is that classes are about learning to
use our bodies better to become the
best version of ourselves that we
can be, rather than aiming for a
quick fix or an unrealistic ideal.
They are classes for real women in
todays world, just as they always
have been.
Annamarie was very proud to see her
ladies dance on Saturday alongside
Fitness League members from all
over the country as well as displays
from South Africa & New Zealand
and many of the ladies felt a great
sense of achievement.
As well as all the wonderful health benefits of
attending a League class there is also a lovely
social side to each class as everyone is so
friendly and the laughter can often be
heard from outside the halls.
Annamarie teaches daytime League classes in
Fakenham, Aylsham, Mundesley, Cromer &
Sheringham with over 100 ladies a week
feeling the benefits and enjoying the fun.

Pictured Above: Annamarie leading her class

in Mundesleys Coronation Hall.
If you wish to know more about her Fitness
League classes please give Annamarie a call
on: 01263 511 169.
Evening Fitness League classes are also
available in Overstrand and are taught
by Laura Duncan, phone her for details
on: 01263 578 244.
