Theyapplytothecurriculumbothatanorganisationallevelandintheclassroomand
inanysettingwherechildrenandyoungpeoplearelearners.
Theprincipleswillassistteachersandschoolsintheirpracticeandasabasisfor
continuingreview,evaluationandimprovement.Theyapplytothecurriculumat
national,educationauthority,schoolandindividuallevelsandmustbetakeninto
accountforallchildrenandyoungpeople
Althoughallshouldapplyatanyonestage,theprincipleswillhavedifferentemphases
asachildoryoungpersonlearnsanddevelops.
Challengeandenjoyment
Childrenandyoungpeopleshouldfindtheirlearningchallenging,engagingand
motivating.Thecurriculumshouldencouragehighaspirationsandambitionsforall.
Atallstages,learnersofallaptitudesandabilitiesshouldexperienceanappropriate
levelofchallenge,toenableeachindividualtoachievehisorherpotential.Theyshould
beactiveintheirlearningandhaveopportunitiestodevelopanddemonstratetheir
creativity.Thereshouldbesupporttoenablechildrenandyoungpeopletosustain
theireffort.
Breadth
Allchildrenandyoungpeopleshouldhaveopportunitiesforabroad,suitablyweighted
rangeofexperiences.Thecurriculumshouldbeorganisedsothattheywilllearnand
developthroughavarietyofcontextswithinboththeclassroomandotheraspectsof
schoollife.
Progression
Childrenandyoungpeopleshouldexperiencecontinuousprogressionintheirlearning
from3to18withinasinglecurriculumframework.
Eachstageshouldbuilduponearlierknowledgeandachievements.Childrenshouldbe
abletoprogressataratewhichmeetstheirneedsandaptitudes,andkeepoptions
opensothatroutesarenotclosedofftooearly.

exploringandachievingmoreadvancedlevelsofunderstanding.
Personalisationandchoice
Thecurriculumshouldrespondtoindividualneedsandsupportparticularaptitudesand
talents.Itshouldgiveeachchildandyoungpersonincreasingopportunitiesfor
exercisingresponsiblepersonalchoiceastheymovethroughtheirschoolcareer.

Coherence

formacoherentexperience.Thereshouldbeclearlinksbetweenthedifferentaspects
ofchildrenandyoungpeople'slearning,includingopportunitiesforextendedactivities
whichdrawdifferentstrandsoflearningtogether.
Relevance
Childrenandyoungpeopleshouldunderstandthepurposesoftheiractivities.They
shouldseethevalueofwhattheyarelearninganditsrelevancetotheirlives,present
andfuture.
