Australia

I am a student of medicine at Munich University in my fifth year of a six-year medical degree. As part of my medical
training in years three to five I have to do three elective attachments of four to eight weeks in duration. I am very
interested in gaining clinical experience in Australia and would therefore like to apply to do a six-week elective at the
medical faculty of the University of Western Australia.
I already have practical clinical experience from electives at a general practice in Germany and in Anesthesiology at a
hospital in London, England. The general practice I did my elective at serves a large rural area and was an excellent
introduction to general medicine, enabling me to gain experience in basic skills such as diagnosis and patient case
histories, ultrasound, dressing wounds and suturing. During my second elective at Hammersmith Hospital, London, I
worked primarily in a team of anesthetists in Surgery, Emergency and Intensive Care, and was able to observe and
practice drug preparation, different anesthetic methods, reanimation and pain therapy.

My elective in London convinced me of the insights to be gained through clinical experience in other countries. In
Germany, Australia is well-known for its excellent medical training. This is why I feel an elective in Australia would be a
very valuable addition to my medical studies.
My curriculum only makes it possible for me to do an elective attachment during vacation, and I have stated my
preferred dates from August 7, 2006 to September 18, 2006 plus alternative dates in the application form. I would be
able to arrive on August 1, 2006 for MRSA testing prior to starting the elective.
Thank you in advance for considering my application. I very much hope you will be able to place me for an elective at
the UWA.
