Standards and Tennessee State Standards
Goals • The student will demonstrate the ability to recall textual details.
• The student will demonstrate the ability to verbalize reason for
judgments

Objectives Students will:


• Listen to Starry Messenger – story of Galileo to learn about a great
scientist, and be introduced to the term biography, and the concept
that new information can be threatening.
• Identify difference between planets, moons and stars. Be able to
identify earth as a member of our planetary family, and our galaxy.
• Recognize that theories, hypothesis change over time as new
information is gleaned.
• Demonstate understanding of concept of rotation, revolution (orbit),
day and night and recognize that earth and moon shine only by
reflected light.
• Grasp concept of shadows and sunlight and sunrise and sunset
being cause by rotation of the earth….
• Engage in an activities that reinforces memory skills Mnemonic
devices and how we learn the planets in proper order.
Materials and • Starry Messenger by Sis
Preparation • Flashlight, globe, smaller white ball for moon,
• Black paper white chalk to create “star charts”
• Constellation, Stars and Planets PowerPoint
• Use the Webpage http://westmeade.net/Library/PlanetsSpace.html
to explore following each presentation.

studying –
Session III
• Nasa site Buzz Lightyear games site Exploration stations
• Flashlight, globe and moon
• Books about the planets and stars

Procedure: 1. Introduce lesson with PowerPoint --- to generate questions about


Introduction space.
2. Practice finding constellations in the night sky, and provide link to
home so that parents and students observe the night sky over the
course of the month.
3. Students will use the link “Trip through the Solar System” to tour the
solar system.
4. In classroom students create their star charts to be posted in the
hall.

Session 2 – Exploring planets finding facts


1. Blind

the Table of Contents and Index. We will also use the webpage to find
a single fact. Each student receives a reward when as they leave if
they can remember one new fact for the day.
