WRITING
PERSONAL ESSAY
Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood
within your culture, community, or family.
In a blink of an eye, your whole life can take a huge unexpected turn. In my case, this impeccable event happened when I lived
in the Philippines.
One Saturday morning in September 2009, the national weather service failed to warn my area, the capital, of a massive
incoming super-typhoon. No one knew what was going to happen. That day, my parents were supposed to attend a PTA
meeting at my school which was conveniently located atop a small hill. They would have just have left me at home to sleep
since it was a weekend, but just this once, they decided to take us with them. The rain was pouring, but it looked like any other
day to me. When we got to school, we found out that no one else came for the meeting, and we had no idea why. We tried to
go back home, but the small river near the hill overflowed. We decided to wait in the car for it to subside. It is not like it has not
happened before.
We ended up waiting 30 hours in a car for us to be able to pass by foot in the very least. My dad was able to walk over the
water after those hours passed. He returned to where the car was after 2 hours and he told us something unbelievable.
Our house, everything my parents ever worked for, was wrecked by the flood completely. The storm in that part of the city was
so great that the casualties were astronomical. I saw my mother trying to hold back the tears when she heard what had
happened. When they told me, I just sat there in utter silence, staring at them in disbelief. She told me something I would never
forget. "I'm sorry life wasn't very nice to us today. I know that this is hard to understand but we're just gonna have to build up
back again, alright? When we fall, what do we do? We get back up on our feet and wipe the dust away. We never let anything
keep us down."

It's been five years since the events unfolded right in front of my eyes. Nothing will ever make me forget the smell of the mud
and the heartache I felt at the time, but since then, I've been a changed person. The misfortune taught me to appreciate
everything and anything my parents and friends do for me and it has made my life a lot more worthwhile. I take nothing for
granted and I cherish even the smallest of memories. I realized that the loss of something great can teach you how to build
yourself back up and that even the mighty fall. The catastrophe helped me become who I am today. The price I paid in the
aftermath was colossal in both monetarily and mentally, however the things that came to light to me subsequently are
irreplaceable.

Being a student who attended a Christian school for more than 9 years, I believe I
have embodied the necessary virtues that are compatible with the mission and goals
of Westmont College. I truly believe that all things I do are not just for myself but for
the glory of God and I hope I will continue to set an example to others and the society
in general. I hope that I will set an example as a student, as a servant created to be of
service to humanity and hopefully as a leader in the future. I hope that enrolling in
Westmont will further enhance my eagerness and desire for knowledge and challenge
me to be at my best and maybe even more and at the same time further enhance the
Christian learnings that have been inculcated in me during my early elementary years.
I believe that the best leaders are people who are well-informed, knowledgeable, and
possess the right values and principles, including being sensitive to others, being
charitable, having faith in God, being selfless and loving to everyone especially those
in most need of help. I would also benefit from this school's fine academics and I
would get to learn more than what I already know both in scholastic terms and in the
virtues I have yet to enlighten myself with. In my time there, I will dedicate a lot of time
in order to serve the community and as well as the Church. I also believe that I will
benefit from the school's choral sector and I will hone my skills in order to be of service
to the church.
