THE

DIVINE 8 MAY

At that time there stood by the Cross of

Jesus His Mother, and His Mothers
sister, Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and
Mary of Magdala.
When Jesus therefore saw His Mother,
and the Disciple whom He Loved
standing by, He said to His Mother:
Woman: behold Thy Son!
He said to the Disciple: Behold, thy
Mother!
And from that hour that Disciple took
her into his own home.
After this, Jesus knowing that all
things are now accomplished that
the Scripture might be fulfilled, said:
I thirst!
...This is the Disciple who testifies to
these things, and wrote these things;
and we know that his testimony is
True.
There are also many other things that
Jesus did, which, if they were written
one by one, I suppose that even the
world itself could not contain the
books that would be written.

ST JOHN

THE

DIVINE APOSTLE

OF CHRIST

St John was called "the Theologian" because of his lofty Teaching concerning the
Eternal, Only Begotten Son and Word of God.
His father was a Galilean fisherman Zebedee and his mother was Salome a
daughter of St Joseph the Betrothed and his late wife, Salome, a sister of St Anna
and thus the cousin of our Lady Theotokos.
His brother was St James (the Younger.)
Our Lord Jesus Christ Loved all His Disciples, but He had a particular Love for St
John, who was the youngest of the Apostles, and who was a devout, pious,
innocent, pure and chaste young man, aflame with boundless Love and
deepest respect for his Divine Teacher, which is why he is referred to as "...the
Disciple whom Jesus Loved."
By Divine Grace, St John shone longer than all the other Apostles on the horizon of
the Apostolic Age, finally Reposing in Peace at the beginning of the second
century.
Our Lord powerfully and clearly expressed His particular Love of and trust in St John
during the final moments of His Earthly Life, when, from the Cross, He honoured
him with the protection and care of His Most Pure and Holy Mother, and then He
presented St John to Her as a trustworthy and respectful son, thereby confirming
His great respect for St John, as though saying: "Only to thy Love, My Beloved
Disciple, do I entrust My Most Precious Treasure. Care for Her as a son, for Thou
art worthy of that Kinship."
By taking upon himself that great and Holy Task of a son's care for the Ever Blessed
Virgin Mary, St John wholly devoted himself to the fulfilment of that lofty
responsibility.
St John left Palestine only after the Dormition of our Lady, Theotokos (circa 47).
