Removing and installing seat occupied sensor


Special tools and workshop equipment required
Removal lever -80 - 200-

WARNING


Observe safety regulations for


working on pyrotechnic components
Chapter and seat occupied sensors
Chapter.

Before handling pyrotechnic


components (e.g. unplugging the
electrical connector) the mechanic
must discharge any static electricity.
This can be done by briefly touching
the door striker plate, or similar.

WARNING
The replacement part (service kit) for seat
occupied recognition (country-specific
version) is already pre-calibrated and the
components must NOT be disconnected.
The service kit consists of:


Seat occupied recognition control unit


-J706-

Pressure sensor for seat occupied


recognition -G452-

Seat occupied sensor mat

Seat padding

Wiring harness between seat


occupied recognition control unit J706- and pressure sensor -G452-.

Removing

Before taking out seat, move seat height


adjuster to centre position.

Remove front passenger's seat Chapter.

With ignition switched on, disconnect


battery earth wire Electrical system; Rep.
gr.27; Battery; Disconnecting and
connecting battery.

Attach front seat to seat repair stand -VAS


6136- Chapter.

Remove front seat backrest Chapter.

Caution
Do not unplug electrical connectors at
pressure sensor for seat occupied
recognition -G452- and seat occupied
recognition control unit -J706-.

Using a small screwdriver, carefully press


pressure sensor for seat occupied
recognition -G452--item 3- off retainer arrow-.

Move clear guide -1- for pressure hose


for seat occupied recognition and
pressure hose -2-.

Unscrew bolt -2- and swivel seat


occupied recognition control unit -J706-item 1- out of retainer.

Press catch and pull electrical connector


for belt buckle out of retainer.

Move clear electrical wiring harness.

Remove bolt -1-.

Unclip front passenger side seat position


sensor -G554--item 2- from lower seat
pan frame and detach.

Remove seat cover and padding (seat


pan without seat depth adjustment) of
seat pan Chapter and carefully fold to
side.

Carefully lever off retaining clips -1- and 3- for seat occupied sensor mat at front of
seat pan using removal lever -80 - 200-.

Detach seat cover with padding for seat


pan. To do so, first guide pressure sensor
for seat occupied recognition -G452- with
wiring harness out through opening in
seat pan. Finally, guide seat occupied
recognition control unit -J706- out through
opening.

WARNING
Risk of damage!
The pressure hose and the mat for the
seat occupied sensor must not be bent
or kinked.

Detach seat cover with padding for seat


pan together with seat occupied sensor
mat -2-, pressure sensor for seat
occupied recognition -G452- and seat
occupied recognition control unit -J706-.

Detach seat cover from padding for seat


pan Chapter.
Caution
Do not separate seat pan padding from
seat occupied sensor mat.

Installing

Caution
Do not unplug electrical connectors at
pressure sensor for seat occupied
recognition -G452- and seat occupied
recognition control unit -J706-.
Install in reverse order of removal; note the
following:

electrical connector) the mechanic

electricity. This can be done by
briefly touching the door striker
plate, or similar.

The pressure hose and the mat for


the seat occupied sensor must not
be bent or kinked.
Note

Make sure electrical connectors are fitted


correctly (as far as stop) and engage audibly.
WARNING
The battery must be connected with the
ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic
components (e.g. airbag or belt
tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this
may result in unwanted triggering after
connecting the battery. There must not
be anyone in the vehicle while you are
connecting the battery.

DANGER!
When working on a vehicle with the
ignition switched on or while the drive
system is active, the engine can start
unexpectedly and exhaust fumes can
cause a health hazard in closed rooms.
Moving parts can trap or draw in parts
of the body and/or clothing (safety
hazard).
Before switching on the ignition,
perform the following steps:

Move selector lever to position P

Activate parking brake

Switch off ignition.

Open bonnet

Connect battery charger (e.g. -VAS


5095A-) to jump-start connections of
12 V electrical system.

Switch on ignition.

With ignition switched on, connect battery


earth wire Electrical system; Rep.
gr.27; Battery; Disconnecting and
connecting battery.

When installing a new service kit and


following any repair work on the front
passenger's seat during which the seat cover
and/or backrest cover is/are disengaged, the
basic setting for the seat occupied
recognition control unit must always be
performed Chapter.

Finally, select Airbag in Guided Fault


Finding function using Vehicle
diagnostic tester.
