CASE STUDY: GEOTHERMAL POWER

Los Humeros II, Units 9 & 10

Mexico

One of the most costeffective sources of

electricity available
in Mexico
Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) granted Alstom a contract for the supply
of 2 x 25 MW geothermal power plant. Both turnkey plants included the installation
of a geothermal steam turbine and all associated equipment including the engine
house, substation, cooling system and generator. Production on the plant comprised
a control room to monitor and control the operation of both units as well as
the enlargement of the existing eight back pressure units in the field.
Located in the Mexican State of Puebla, a wooded mountainous area 200 km east
of Mexico City, Los Humeros II geothermal power plant used drilled wells
to extract steam from a depth of up to 3,500 meters where the geothermal reservoir
is located.
Production took place at the Alstoms Morelia factory a specialised center
in the manufacturing and assembly of turbines, generators, large-sized-diaphragm
and blade fabrication.
Units 9 and 10 operate as base-load power, feeding the nations electrical
distribution grid, being capable of producing more than 400 GWh of clean
electricity per year respectively, thus allowing a regional and international industrial
scheme with supplies from Mexico, USA, Europe and more.

CUSTOMER PROFILE
Comision Federal de Electricidad, known as CFE, is a public company in charge
of controlling and developing the power industry in Mexico. Nationwide, CFE runs
the production, transmission and distribution of electric power with an installed
capacity of 58.2 GW, of which 964.5 MW is geothermal. To date, Alstom has supplied
160 MW of the geothermal capacity with the 4 x 25 MW at Los Azufres II,
the 2 x 5 MW at Las Tres Virgenes in Baja California Sur and the 2 x 25 MW at
Los Humeros II, units 9 & 10. In 2013, Alstom has been awarded a 1 x 25 MW
contract at Los Humeros III A power plant.
CFE serves 26.9 million residential, commercial and industrial customer accounts,
which includes about 80 million people. Its coverage is distributed along 734,000 km
of transmission and distribution lines that run throughout most of the nation.

LOS HUMEROS II, UNITS 9 & 10

SCOPE OF THE ORDER

CFE launched an international bid with technical specifications to build a turnkey geothermal generation unit, including equipment
to regulate and enhance geothermal steam, a geothermal steam turbine, generator, direct contact condenser, hotwell pumps,
cooling tower, distributed control center, turbine control, motor control and electrical equipment rooms, substation, engine room,
travelling derrick, firefighting system and Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioner (HVAC), as well as civil works, project
management and commissioning. Alstoms tender provided an integrated solution that fulfilled CFEs needs, including a control
room which will enable the remote controlling and monitoring of the geothermal plant, for autonomous operation.

ADVANTAGES
Alstom is a global leader in steam turbine technology with more than 100 years of experience in manufacturing, delivering,
installing and servicing steam turbine generator sets from 5 MW to 1,800 MW for a wide range of applications, including
geothermal. Geothermal is one of the most reliable sources of renewable power.
