Buchan A is a 19,404 tonne (full load displacement) or 12,033 tonne (lightweight) semisubmersible platform with three main decks built on five columns in pentagon format. Each
column is mounted on a doughnut-shaped pontoon 7.5m high and 22m in diameter.

The deck arrangement consists of lower, intermediate and main decks, and a drill deck
located over the central area of the main deck. The main and drill decks are exposed to the
elements; the intermediate and lower decks other than the moonpool area, are enclosed,
heated and ventilated. One opening to the sea is located in the lower deck, a moonpool
6.3m x 8.76m for riser access and well intervention, drilling operations.

PROCESSING
The process systems on Buchan include separation, oil export, gas dehydration, gas
compression, OIW treatment and reinjection facilities with associated utilities.

The Separation train comprises two horizontal vessels, which operate in series at
successively lower pressure, separating the well fluids into oil, gas and water phases. Well
fluids pass to the HP separator where most of the gas is removed. The oil from the HP
separator is passed through a 10 line to the MP separator and on to the crude oil export
pumps. The oil is pumped through a metering unit and down the export riser for export.

The water is drawn off under level control to a water treatment unit before it is discharged to
the sea or pumped down hole with a PWRI pump for reservoir pressure maintenance.

There is no gas export from the Buchan platform. Lower pressure gas from the MP separator
is directed to flare, whereas gas from the HP is passed to the compression system. The gas
lift compressor is a 3rd-stage in-line centrifugal compressor. Gas is compressed by the 1st
stage, after which it passes through a dehydration unit. The dried gas then returns to the
compressor, where its pressure is further increased by the 2nd and 3rd stages, before being
discharged to the gas lift manifold.

The platform process system is nominally designed for the following quantities. However,
peak flowrates may exceed these values based on an analysis of the production profiles and
the actual equipment capacities at that time:
